  1. I myself am currently saving up to be able to make my first jump. I want to experience Freefall, so that leaves Tandem or AFF. However, for some reason AFF doesn't unnerve me like the though of a tandem does. Odd, I know, and I can't exactly explain why, but just the way it is. So AFF is the way I'm going. Course I also have wanted to do this for six years, and thusly saving up money so that I have enough for quite a few jumps so I don't go a long time without one. Well.. then again.. all my friends do think I'm more than a little crazy for all the strange things I do.. so that may have something to say. So, I'd say go for AFF :) Plus like was said you get to spend the day at the DZ, which is a blast.
  2. The lid not closing is not a real issue. My MBP is like that, from where I put a bit too much pressure on it while it was across my eg. Everything is fine. The face plate coming up from the case, that is a little worrisome to me, but unless you plan on having your Mac out in the rain.. in the shower.. or whatnot.. it should be fine. Me, I just store & carry it in a water resistant laptop bag.
  3. Isn't that why they made webcams? So, I'm guessing that your username is a adaptation of querida, then? :P And no, not an adaptation of that. It's more of an adaptation of Cerridwen that I created for use on a MUD about 10 years ago. Been using the name since for most online stuff.
  4. Never will deny it.. there's a reason I make a living tending to those things Oh.. and hehe.. I get laid just about every night. Just unfortunately my girlfriend is off visiting her boyfriend this weekend. So, I'm cut off until Sunday. Yes, I'm the girl that all the geeky boys dream about, but can't have.. because.. well... they has the wrong plumbin'!
  5. Yup. I'm far from a Mac-fangirl. I own one because work dropped it in my lap. I will admit, I've fallen for the little laptop. It has it's quirks, but I like it. All in all.. the Intel Macs are just a PC with a different type of firmware on the Mobo. The Mac OS is just a customized BSD(version of the almighty Unix), and a unique GUI. The drawback to the Mac is the cost. Which honestly, you are paying for the OS.. with a tried and true Unix core, not the hardware. Oh wait, that's right.. they sell the OS for less than $200, and to offset they markup the cost of the entire package. Not a bad idea really. Lowering the price of the OS means more people are likely to upgrade when the next version comes along.
  6. Hm funny... my Mac has a better video card than my Desktop. Less memory, but still better. Nvidia 8600M GT 256mb ram in my Mac. Nvidia 8500 (forget the extioning) 512mb card in my desktop. Either machine will run it.
  7. Considering it acts as bootloader for the EFI chip (which Macs use instead of the Bios that PCs generally do) so that you can then load a native Windows install, it shoudl run without too many issues. Assuming the proper drivers for the Mac hardware are installed.
  8. Commodore64 baby! Are you keeping up with the Commodore? Cause the Commodore's keeping up with you! There.. now that I've gotten myself shot(or glomped) by those who know what I just did... Computer, hands down. Any computer, as long as it has a net connection. Why? MUDs, that's why. The precursor to our modern MMO. Everquest was even sued because it was thought to use the server architecture of a certain MUD codebase. And technically all MMOs are MUDs, just with a nice graphical interface instead of the text medium. Plus these days you can get almost any console game to run on the computer if you get the right tools. Edit: For all you kiddies out there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_f3uIzEIxo&feature=related
  9. yeah I am soo not gonna argue that GIMP is.. well.. GIMPed compared to PS, lol.
  10. Not even readin the thread or looking at the options... YES!
  11. Not a problem! I'm all for converting people from Windows! There's starting to be fewer and fewer valid reasons for people to stick with it, since more and more 'windows only' software is able to be used in *nix by some means, or have a much better free *nix alternative. Note for those in the dark: *nix is refering to Unix and/or linux and the variations thereof
  12. Cedega is like $5/mo which gives you voting priviledges towards denoting which games you want them to work on increasing support for. Only downside, they used to have an initial 3mo signup and then just $5/mop after that. Now they seem to go for 6 or 12mo periods. You only need to have a current subscription when you want updates. If the version you are using plays all your games to your satisfaction, no need to keep it active. Most of your big popular titles work really really well. More obscure ones, or those with less of a following are sometimes hit or miss. As for photoshop, I am not entirely certain. Offhand I would say it should be able to run it. If not you can try Crossover office as a free trial just to see if that may work for ya.
  13. As a note, a 32 bit OS, which is what XP Pro/Home is as well as the normal Vista and Linux kernels, can support up to 4GB of ram. It's just that MS fubared their memory management with XP, and it can only properly allocate memory up to 3GB. Thus XP can only go up to 3GB efficiently. However, on any 32bit OS you are limited to 4GB. Want to go above that... use XP Pro 64, Vista 64.. or even better just throw windows out the door, load up 64bit Linux, and use Cedega. 14. Thanks for the heads up! As I've said a couple of times, I'll be up there on Sat, weather permitting to hang out and meet people. Going to work some overtime at work to save up the money. Not hard, just I want to make sure I have enough for in case I like it, I have extra to progress further without much downtime :) So far most of the things in the SIM and from extra readings things are at least making sense. Right now it's just familiarizing myself with things. I'll hopefully have time this week to read through some more and absorb it better.
  15. That's easy :P I'm slowin down.. your the one still speedin along Though admittedly I read that entirely the wrong way.... read it as: "Do you get..." But thanks for the other questions.
  16. Yup I can definitely vouch for that, since I just recently was doing the searching for a place to look to do my first jump. First I found, was one of said sites, and later found it was Skyride (from people here). Then found out about The Farm, and since it's about a 4mile difference between that one and the Skyride place, gonna head up there on Sat to hang out, watch, and meet people. Course ask questions as well, and start preparing to save the money for my first one... can we say hello overrtime ;)
  17. I have been planning to use something like that as explanation to my SO when I tell her again that I wanna go jump out of a plane. "But think about it.. if I know how to jump, I'll be prepared when I'm flying for business and something happens..." Of course at the time I'll find something wittier and more amusing to say, but well, gotta find some way to make her grin about the idea. Amuses me that she's worried about skydiving safety, when we both helped run a Skycoaster wherein it's two carabiners keepin ya from the ground. She's the one that even got me to ride it for the first time. However, after all the reading I've done now, I'm much better prepared to discuss the safety issues with her. So pretty much just like we refute people's fears of Skycoaster being entirely unsafe (of course there's risk involved), I should be able to do the same here. Overall though, I'm enjoying this thread since I was curious about this myself. If I get to the point of having my own rig, I'd definitely feel much better having it as carry-on than stowed away.
  18. Duly noted, and done! Thanks, Kaeli
  19. Oh I have every intention of asking questions during the FJC when that time does come. A lot of the reading and such is also helping to keep me from being too excited and spending the money before I can comfortably afford it, lol. I've not purchased the SIM yet, I'm simply reading through the PDF copy from USPA. Getting the license.. that remains to be seen. Currently that is the plan, but not going to say most definitely until I've given it a try. I would try tandem, but well.. that honestly unnerves me more than hopping out for the AFF. Thanks for the suggestion though!
  20. Awww, and here I was gearing up to make sure I had a god juicy response for ya next weekend :D At any rate, I figured people from The Farm posted here since one of their fresh grads is the one who pointed me to them. At any rate, still doesn't invalidate the desire to have good intelligent questions to ask. You can read about things all day long, but you tend to learn better when you can talk and see more of what's going on. I guess I have a tendency to try to learn all I can about something before I do it. Like this past February, work took us on a ski trip. Got to go snowboarding, which I've never done before (haven't skiied either for that matter). However, the weeks leading up to it, I was reading everything I could find, and by the time I got to the slope, and with an instructor I had them all swearing I had done it before lol. Having the theory in my head well before getting actual instruction helped make it all click much faster. In the end, had a blast.. up until I realized I spent all day on the slope without eating, and now all the food places were closed down :p
  21. Hi guys, I'm looking to visit at least one of the local DZs in my area in about a week. I'm very new to skydiving, have yet to make my first jump, and looking to at least get out and meet people and ask questions so that I can be as informed as possible when the time comes. Anyways, I was wondering what sort of questions should I ask while I am there? I don't care if they are questions that are trivial or ones that you think everyone would ask beforehand.. just send em my way! I guess basically I'm looking for a general set of questions that you would have before going to a new DZ, wished you had asked before your first jump, or even wish that newbies would ask before theirs. Currently I'm reading through the SIM and the posts here.. but alas it can be a lot to take in from just reading, talking definitely helps a lot. Just for the record I'll be heading to Skydive the Farm in Rockmart, GA for this excursion. Thanks in advance! Kaeli
  22. Oh I've definitely been doing some reading. Even before Woady mentioned his not so impressive visit there, I had noticed that the website seemed rather cookie cutter and identical to other places. That plus the lack of any pricing listed (on any of the cookie cutter sites I found) had started making me wonder. Then woady's comment, and the fact that their email doesn't work, definitely left me even more skeptical. So I did some readin here on the forums, reading reviews and such, and so far, STF is definitely in the lead. Though admittedly, only one problem with them right now... I keep mentally adding a U to the end ! Thanks again for the advice and warm welcome. Now to work overtime so I can pay my speeding ticket and then get airborne.
  23. Sweet, they aren't too far from each other.. just a few miles, so distance wouldn't be much of an issue really. Just means I travel down GA-6 a little further. I'll probably see about stopping by both of them next weekend (not this upcoming one but the next) and try to get a feel for them, as well as see about ASC's pricing. Thanks for the tip though!
  24. Utah is just a wee bit too far away considering I am on the East coast . The place I am looking at going is Atlanta Skydive Center. It's pretty much just up the road from where I live. Pull out of my apartment complex, turn right, drive for about 30 miles or so and I'm there. I'm definitely looking forward to getting to go and watch, but I'm gonna have to make sure I don't take money of any sort with me.. save maybe enough cash for gas and food.. otherwise...
  25. Hi everyone! Just thought I would introduce myself instead of lurking for ages. maybe that will help push me along and not forget things this time. Anyways, I got interested in skydiving about six years ago when I was helping run a Skycoaster at the local theme park. For those that don't know what it is, here is a link, http://www.skycoaster.com/home.html. Nowhere near the same thing really, I know, but tis was fun. Anyways, a group of Skydivers came to the attraction one day and we were talking. I made mention of how my favorite part of Skycoaster was the initial freefall that we have until the cables stop you from the vertical fall and glide you into the arching sway. They immediately pounced on me about how I'd enjoy skydiving immensely. Well I did the research, but unfortunately was out of my budget, and it eventually kinda fell to the wayside despite how much I've wanted to try it. Course it was also out of my budget because well, I was determined to forego the tandem and just go with a first jump via AFF. Figured if I'm gonna do it, might as well get the fullest experience I can. Anyways off and on through the years I've had the bug return, but always when I'm broke :p. Now, however, I'm determined to not let the urge pass before I have the money. Plan on visiting the local DZ in a couple weeks to get a chance to watch and meet people.. plus SO will be out of town and I will be bored. Course there is the slight fear aspect holding me back. Not of actually stepping out (yeah I know I say that now cuz I'm on the ground) but more afraid of the costs after the bug embeds itself fully and turn to infection, then addiction :p Kae
