In fact, if you pull the left rear riser a little bit on some big canopies, you will get a right turn initially, then if you pull down more, you'll get a left turn, so your analysis seems correct. You don't have to outrun the bear.

As others have said, the FJC is not the time for information overload. For one thing, most students in the first jump course aren't in it for the long run. They need enough information to survive one parachute jump plus a little more to grow with as they continue (if they decide to continue). Comparing training for skydivers with training for aircraft is a little misplaced anyway, because on an airplane or helicopter training flight the instructor can demonstrate things then discuss them with the student as they fly along. Can't do that on an AFF level 1 jump. I would agree that more canopy control training is a good idea, but not in the FJC. You don't have to outrun the bear.

The beer rules are long and complicated. Commit the following phrase to memory and you can't go wrong: "I don't know if I owe beer, but your friendship means so much to me that I have brought you beer." You don't even have to say it with a straight face as long as you bring beer. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Correct. So I'm thinking that repack would cost like 125 - 150 dollars? But wouldn't this just need to be done once for a given reserve canopy/container? Or do they mean to do this test at every repack? You don't have to outrun the bear.

OK, just to get you started on this: You'll probably get a better buy getting used gear rather than new. Search classifieds on Dropzone.com to see what's available, then talk to an instructor and rigger at your dropzone about some of the things you've seen advertised. Don't rush to buy something just because it's a good price. There will be more stuff available. Use the search function here with keywords like "buying used gear" to see other posts on the subject. You should be able to find a number of main and reserve canopies suitable for your size. The harness may be a little harder. Look at manufacturer's web sites to see if they have anything on sale. Look around at your DZ to see what other jumpers are using. Maybe someone will let you try on their rig, not to jump, but to see how it fits. That's a few thoughts. Someone will come along with some more. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Asking questions at a DZ to pick a safe DZ is like asking the waiter if the roast beef is good today. Of course it is. You certainly want to ask about prices and schedules. You could ask how many AFF instructors the DZ has and how long they have been instructing. When you visit a DZ, just hang around a while and watch what goes on. They won't mind as long as you stay out of the way, and you might get a certain vibe that you like or don't like. That's all I've got right now, but I'm sure someone will come up with more. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Things to do and places to see in Colorado in October
Bertt replied to BillyVance's topic in The Bonfire
That's not much time, but you could rent a car at the airport and drive over to Breckenridge. I used to live in Boulder, and I can tell you that it can snow as early as September, or the temperature could be 85 in the daytime in October. Your friend in Breckenridge is probably your best resource on this trip. Congrats on 10 years. You don't have to outrun the bear. -
Am I taking these forums too seriously?
Bertt replied to ILikePizza's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
OK, here's an example. In another thread, a student asked about taking Dramamine during AFF training to prevent nausea. A guy with 16 years in the sport said not to take Damamine. Two minutes later, a guy with less than one year in the sport posted, "Dramamine should help." I'd say take about half the stuff you see here seriously. You don't have to outrun the bear. -
Do you know anybody on the "Screaming Eagles" Parachute Demo Team at Ft. Campbell? You don't have to outrun the bear.

"Back in the day people couldn't get the stuff off their mouth if you threw a strip over it, unlike the pansy crap of today " Is there somebody in the trunk of your car you'd like to tell us about?? You don't have to outrun the bear.

Wings owners, lend me your ears and opinions.
Bertt replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Gear and Rigging
I like everything you've listed. The laterals depend on how you like the rig to feel when you wear it - waste of money for some people. Stainless steel is not necessary, but I like it because I live in Alabama where it's hot, humid, and sweaty, (which means salty). You don't have to outrun the bear. -
Welcome to skydiving. Have fun - be safe. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1448166;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread You don't have to outrun the bear.

I thought the funniest one in there was the response to "Make me a sandwich". Then I thought, what if she just brought him back a cucumber sandwich. You don't have to outrun the bear.

How did Qwest install phone service without coming to the house? Did they assign a phone number that can be used to find Mr. Garcia? Have you contacted police to see if they have any interest in this? OK, I'm going to watch South Park now. You don't have to outrun the bear.

A week after I had wisdom teeth out, I tried to play tennis. Running and bouncing around on the tennis court was too much. I'd suggest not jumping until you can comfortably jump off something 3 or 4 feet high and do a PLF comfortably. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Beer has names ??? You don't have to outrun the bear.

No offense, but you're getting ahead of yourself. Your instructors will put you on a canopy appropriate for your size. Go with that and ask questions around the DZ. After a few jumps, the criteria for selecting a proper canopy will be clearer. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Just a couple of thoughts here: One person had a problem with Mirage fitting properly. Lots of people love 'em. If you are going to jump now, get a rig that fits you now - not what you expect will fit in a year or so. Go to the DZ and see if some other jumpers there will let you try their rig on. You don't have to jump with it. Just wear it for a few minutes and get an idea about the fit. You said it yourself, there are a lot of choices. The most important thing is the fit, not the brand. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Have you tried Colorado Skysports in Boulder ? You don't have to outrun the bear.

One other point about the difference between the way a packer packs a main and the way a rigger packs a reserve: reserves are packed to make them open quick; mains are packed to make them open soft and on heading - just like it says in the ad for every main canopy on the market. As you learn to pack, look for those little tips that packers use to make customers happy and life easier for themselves. The internet is a good place to raise questions. Packing class is a good place to ask questions - lots of them. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Setting the brakes with the lines inside or outside didn't make the snivel different. The long snivel might have had something to do with the near line twist. Are you sure you set the brakes properly on that jump? The more consistent you are, the more consistent results you'll get. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Two words: Dreamland Ribs You don't have to outrun the bear.

I don't have the answer, but I have some questions. Have you used Pro-trac or similar to measure your speed? It would take a lot more speed to go from soft openings to what you describe. Have you measured the line trim to be sure it's right? Do you have access to what you were jumping before, or has your weight changed or something that would make that out of the question? Do you have a rigger at your dz who could put a pocket on the slider for you? You don't have to outrun the bear.

Have your instructors said anything about toe taps? You don't have to outrun the bear.

I wasn't criticizing. In all the excitement, it would be extremely easy to miss something like that. I just threw that in for emphasis, because I thought this was a very informative thread. You don't have to outrun the bear.
