Couldn't this description be consistent with a ground launched rocket flare? I don't see why it necessarily came from the plane. The claimed illumination of the plane from below sounds a lot more like what you'd see from a ground launched flare. They make some pretty big ones for commercial marine use. Some have small parachutes that extend their time in the air. The attempted suppression/intimidation of the witnesses makes no sense to me. 377 Could be a firework. It was Thanksgiving Eve and the Ingrams were in town... I and others have searched news reports - nothing. No meteor/bolide reports for that evening in that part of the US. The report center has nothing and this is consistent with a flare or firework falling. Galen's exact words are: " (1) no explosion seen or heard; (2) object gave off an intense glow of red, which eyewitnesses stated even lit-up part of the bottom of the aircraft....From eyewitnesses point of reference, it looked as though red object was shot out from rear of the aircraft and then arched-out to the west as it fell. (3) from the eyewitnesses position stated, and from direction the object was seen in the sky, it appears that the object was very near Orchards, WA (Vancouver suburb). Red object rapidly drifted due west of Vancouver towards the area of the Columbia River. ...saw a distinct reddish flame falling and arcing from the sky. It appeared to be trailing from a southbound aircraft. The reddish object drifted west, out towards the Columbia River in the vicinity of Sauvie Island. In a matter of seconds, it disappeared from view of the witnesses. ... I was the person who saw the red flaming light falling from the sky ..." The altitude sounds lower than 10k feet. West of VCR makes it sounds like someone coming in to land at PDX. It begins out near Orchard and ends west of VCR/PDX? The report of the FBI telling someone to STFU sounds totally bogus to me. If the report happened it sounds like someone other than FBI agents. You guys never miss a chance to get in a dig at Ralph. How would Ralph know if it wasn't FBI agents? You always seem to assume the FBi is everywhere all the time and knows, or should know, everything. Weber Effect! It could be someone shot a flare on Thanksgiving eve, at an incoming plane bound for PDX. I would check who landed on that date and time. It might have been Bohan. I value Bruce's reports. Cook has a few bills. Are they black? Couldnt his science team test any blackness and see what it is? Is the black carbon? Why did he or Tosaw opt for "fire" to explain blackness/carbon, without any testing? My dog is black. Was my dog in fire? Or is the blackness more purple? Fire doesnt produce purple? Cook and Tosaw seem to be thinking like Jo Weber! The kind of blackness Cook is associating with fire would be carbon-black. Cook needs to test the bills for carbon? He can even date the carbon to see when the fire induced carbon occurred. Maybe the date will come out 2004BC. That is the date Bertrand Russel's relative Lord Usher said Creation happened.

Me too! There are some episodes that never made the major press. In the late 70s a solo female sailor in a Suntory sponsored sailboat race from the US to Japan made a frantic radio call saying she was witnessing an atomic explosion and feared for her life. Her description was nearly identical to the one supplied by the JAL 747 crew, but took place years earlier than their sighting. The plane made its curve to the West below Battlefield and the Brush Prairie area with South Easterly bearings passing not too far from what was then called the Scholls Airport still bearing South East to stay out of the populated areas and within search and rescue perimeters crossing the Columbia with approximates at McGuire Island keeping Troutdale airport to the East of the plane. At this point the crew felt secure that Cooper was gone but ordered on to Reno. Yes you have cited clearly one account. Congrats on your clarity for a change! I wish your witness would surface? He might as well - everyone else seems to be surfacing. There is another whole slate of accounts of him jumping on the Oregon side, from FBI agents no less. The story hinges on the assumption the 'sticks' were flares, not dynamite. We discussed using flares during a drop, before. Did people/public even know there was a hijacking under way at 8:00pm on the 24th - had there been news reports? I doubt it. So any witness is either knowledgeable-involved or random ... Galen's account is specific as 'fire out of the end of the plane'! So the witness saw the event very early. Calcs: something between ~0.0957-0.0017 arc minutes for the plane based on 133ft length, depending on angle of sighting, distance & elevation relative to oberver all changing ... smaller angle subtended by Cooper and parachute. Flare would be a brilliant point source with sky glow (ball of fire?). Time in air 60-90 secs? No more than 4 mins as per prior posts here at DZ. The winds have to support the trajectory reported... Im not saying its impossible, just an uncanny observation. It would attract for more attention below 3500 feet. To see it at elevation and even the bottom of the plane lit up means he stood there on the stairs with the flare lighted before jumping ... ?

If you could see the bottom of the plane you could see the parachute - simple matter of optical resolution if the story holds. (Did Galen or his team make the calculation? They will now!). Did the witnesses have binoculars or a telescope ? _ who says it was road flares? Maybe what they followed was the trailing debris of a bomb exploding with the parachute on fire? _ if the jets could see 305's lights how come they missed the pyrotechniques that went onf or up to a minute? _ not one news report that I can find. _ this is an old sewing circle story. One version is "his life raft inflated on the way down and you could see that too. All those pilot chutes had built in life rafts. It was yellow" .... just like in the movies... _ westward drift ... guess winds at225-235 is wrong. _ unless this is a flare somebody other than Cooper deployed looking for Cooper or sending a signal?
