Exactly, so why spend the extra time and money on film and "no-name" nude talent for extended sex scenes that do nothing to enhance the plot and minimize the audience on top of that...Also, big name actors is what bring people in, and often those actors may not feel comfortable exposing themselves. Media is one of Americas last big industries, we can't survive without it and we're learning to maximize profits...We basically have a base public standard for general broadcasting that appeals to all people with outlets for various genres that appeal to smaller groups. I don't see anything wrong with that. I think we could be a little more open it that regard, but we do have educational public broadcasting where they don't hesitate to show things like live births or jungle titties in Africa...for the most part people here aren't offended by that. I went to Catholic school were we learn about sex in science class. We watched videos of live births, and there it was, a women with her legs a spread - a gaping vagina as if it were to swallow me whole...we were all 11-12 years old...nobody bitched and moaned. There is a time and a place. Again, this is just a small minority of people who were offended and it all got blown out of proportion on multiple levels. We've also learned how to make money off controversy as well. The relationship of the people with the FCC has been notoriously tumultuous. Hell no, they're worried about lining the governments pockets with fines and taxes... Government is very much involved in the affairs of Hollywood. When I worked in CA the FBI was constantly and literally looking over our shoulder...and this was a private company! I had to go through a series of visual checkpoints, then card access checkpoints, then card-and-thumb print access check points and this only got me into the core of the building where I worked...I still had to got through another series of checkpoints to get to the main vault that housed almost every film and TV show from the major studios, where I was only 1 of 3 people who had access, and 2 of us had to be present to get in using simultaneous entry methods...I thought it was overkill, but the FBI didn't mess around. A blockbuster hit was once stolen months before theatrical release and sold to Inda and China...We lost hundreds of Millions. Furthermore, sex is actually a big business in this country...by keeping it 'hidden' we keep the demand high and can charge premium prices. Capitalism isn't always a good thing and tends to hinder the advancement of society in general. Actually it is quite the reverse. Movies are often edited to get away from the dreaded R rating so they can make more money. Show too much nudity and the R rating will reduce earning potential. People remember the sex scenes from Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction more than they do the rest of the movies (save the rabbit in pot scene). As you say, lie to the audience in the trailer to get them to come, but not actually do it because we're prudes. I'm not twisting your words...Squeak is the one that made the reference to the misconception on how americans relate to sex and violence. That's what we were talking about. If you Europeans want the golden globe for most perversion in a film, that's fine...I'm sure you deserve it. meh, we're just not that preoccupied with it...I can get my own sex. Us writers are more concerned with creative content and storyline. Why spend all the extra money on nude actors and film for extended sex scenes that do absolutely nothing to enhance the plot. All we have to do is market the film as having a sex scene and people come in droves tossing money at our feet...besides, the real money is in movies that appeal to a general audience. Futhermore, most all adults are familiar with sex, but many are not that familiar with violence. We go to the movies to experience something unique. We all know what it's like to to make love...but what's it like to be in a life threatening situation? How do you respond? It glorifies sex and violence...there is not some conspiracy to show preference to one or the other. The problem is that we're not really comparing apples to oranges...there are many creative ways to depict sex, but many more creative ways to depict violence. You may have 10 movies that have gunshots and only 1 that shows hard sex...10 movies that show hard sex and 1 movie that shows a man being sawed in half with a chainsaw from head to balls. That's not so...the explicitly graphic imagery of both sex and violence are implied when sex and violence reaches a certain level...no big deal. I think these scientists have a better inkling as to what is actual science and what is simply passed off as faith...no so much with actors or athletes. Hmmm...I hear it many times on TV, but I lived here my whole life and don't suffer from the ignorance that comes with sporadic and limited visits to this country. While our standards for a general audience do not typically include full frontal nudity, it does not eliminate partial nudity, sexual references, sexual situations, gently love scenes, rough sex, nor rape. I'm not so sure why people like you are so hard up to see T&A on TV...just rent a p-13/R-rated movie, porno, or subscribe to a premium service. There is also plenty of violence, but like sex there are also limits to what is considered appropriate for a general audience. Blowing someone's head off is implied, just like anal sex or rape is. There really is no reason to display the graphic details. If you want to see violent hardcore gore, there are plenty of other outlets that you're free to choose to satiate your depravity. Now I'm going to appeal to my own personal experience of childhood sexuality in order to accentuate my point and attempt to partially bring this discussion back on topic: When I was young - like 5 years old or so, before the FCC regulated the time that sexual content could be broadcasted, I'd be watching my morning cartoons. Unbeknownst to my mother, I'd surf channels and there it was - full nudity stripteasing on HBO. (just a side note - there was a similar situation where a man caught his young son also watching similar content. This instance is what prompted the FCC to regulate the times explicit sexual content could be broadcasted.) Now, it kindergarten I began to act out what I saw on tv. I would make out with chicks at nap time. When I'd go home I would engage in more sexual activities with a girl down the street that were even more explicit. I wanted to get here sister involved so as she walked by I just pulled down her pants...she told her dad and he reamed my ass. I began to feel ashamed and realized that this was not appropriate behavior. I became very anxious and tormented with all kinds of sick sexual thoughts even homosexual thoughts...I used to cry and have to count myself to sleep because these graphic images would just race through my mind. It wasn't until it became so unbearable that I told my parents what I was going through - like 7 years old or so, I think. They educated and comforted me and my anxiety ceased. All three of the girls I messed around with grew up to be teen mothers at around 15 years old. Now I do know of 2 other girl involved in similar sexual activity at a young age and they both grew up to be doctors. They seemed to have lived a normal life despite this instance so there are obviously other factors involved, most likely maturity to handle the sexuality and good parenting. My parents took action and diffused the situation and I remained a virgin till I was 17/18? To get this somewhat back on topic, I do believe things like violence, guns and sex should be hidden until children are educated and mature enough to handle these situations in the proper context/environment without perverting them.
