Should abortion be allowed in cases of rape or incest?
SivaGanesha replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
I am in favor of abortion being allowed in all cases, but the wording of the question--which is a common wording in abortion debates--has always bothered me. It's the or incest caveat in the question that bothers me. I'm unclear as to why someone who generally opposes abortion would make an exception in incest cases. Since the question specifically asks about rape as well, I presume that the question is referring to instances of incest that are NOT also instances of rape--eg incest involving consenting adults. So the question remains--why would there be an exception for incest involving consenting adults? Is it because of the risk of birth defects? If so do such persons who are generally abortion foes also make an exception for other types of high risk pregnancy? Like I say--I favor the right to an abortion in all cases but the frequent use of the "or incest" phrase in questions of this type suggests to me that there is something in the thought processes of abortion foes that I do not understand--and that I find rather disquieting. Creation and destruction only in the sense that one sometimes needs to destroy undesirable old habits in the process of creating new ones. Actually I started using this handle a few years back when I was interested in a particular guru from India who was very big on Siva and Ganesha. I saw this guru again last weekend--for the first time in five years--in San Francisco and was much less impressed this time around. Also as I noted in another thread I gave up dabbling in Eastern religions for Lent. Though I don't know whether I should continue this or not--last weekend I noticed (for the first time) that there is actually a DZ Buddha in an out of the way corner of my DZ. That is a subject of some debate actually. Some would say that a Christian is actually three gods away from being an atheist. Hmmm...I guess mine must just be late for some reason. I'm kind of bummed tho ...I was hoping since I can't jump this weekend to at least be able to read Parachutist. Anyone get their May copy of Parachutist magazine yet? I've usually received mine by the 1st of the month but it hasn't arrived yet this month. The ceilings are going to be below 6500 for most of the weekend at my DZ so I don't think I'm going to try to jump. I'm probably going to spend my weekend preparing for a job interview next Thursday. This will (hopefully) pay a lot better than my current job so should allow more jumping if I can get it

I'm not a Christian--but this is SC so I'm allowed to debate civilly :) --so I have a skydiving related question for you. When I sat in on the FJC at Skydance in Feb for my refresher training, one of the questions on the test was who has ultimate responsibility for my skydive. The answers were: (a) myself (b) my instructors (c) the state of California The correct answer, of course, is (a). But my question is--if you were an instructor and you had a student who wrote in a fourth answer saying "(d) Jesus Christ" has ultimate responsibility for their skydive and for ensuring they get a good canopy above their heads--how would you respond? I don't know much with my jump total but it looks like the pilot chute is still well inside the aircraft when the student exits. This would seem to create the potential problem of the pilot chute snagging on something or someone inside the aircraft if the student leaves unexpectedly or early or in some manner not properly co-ordinated with the instructor. In my one jump from a Caravan years ago--albeit I was an AFF 1 student--my exit resembled the first jumper in this video, not the second jumper. I would think the same exit procedure (that of the first jumper in this video) would be good for IAD as well. That way the pilot chute is already outside the door as the jumper climbs out and it is assured that if the student leaves the pilot chute will too. Keep in mind that this is an instructor trainee video so the "students" are not real students but other prospective instructors who may be doing unusual things intentionally to confuse the fellow instructor trainees and see how well they react. But again I know very little about these things with my jump total. : 1 : Only one jump on Saturday. Jumped from 13K but did a practice touch just after exit preparing for my hop'n'pops from 5500 and 3500 a few jumps from now. Money concerns grounded me for the rest of the weekend and will next weekend as well. I did spend some time talking to one of the coaches and think I have a fairly clear plan for finishing my 'A'. I expect to be back in two weeks and make a whole bunch of jumps. interesting day on the Jewish calendar
SivaGanesha replied to SivaGanesha's topic in Speakers Corner
Not completely. Religion plays an important social role--I believe that all religions are primarily social groups, although some religions play up this side of things and others downplay the importance of social interactions. By observing their parents interacting socially in their church/synagogue/temple/mosque/etc of choice, children learn about adult social interactions and how their parents see themselves in relationship to other adults and members of the community. Religion is often the only social network to provide this opportunity. School is only for children so there are no good (or bad) role models for appropriate adult social behavior. Work is only for adults so the children never see their parents in that environment. Religion bridges the gap between adults and children in the community and plays an important role that isn't always easy to find elsewhere. Well, rehmwa said "apply benefits for children, only to people with children" This might be a fair standard to apply in tax matters but requiring a couple to first have children before they can be together might be considered quite unfair in immigration matters. Immigration is the benefit where it is hard to see how to completely get government out of the marriage business. Most people are against completely open borders but are in favor of allowing bona fide spouses of citizens to immigrate. And they probably split re allowing civil union partners to immigrate. interesting day on the Jewish calendar
SivaGanesha replied to SivaGanesha's topic in Speakers Corner
Here is a bit more information: Israel celebrates blessing of the sun Clouds may cast shadow on rare Jewish blessing of the sun A cult? More than half the world's population has at least a cultural connection to Judaism or one of its descendant religions (Christianity, Islam, etc). If Judaism is a cult then everything is a cult. Today was an event seen only two or three times in the whole history of Judaism--which is to say the whole history of Western organized religion. But I'm still curious to know what December 21, 2012 is going to be like! SivaGanesha replied to SivaGanesha's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not Jewish (and I'm sure I'll be corrected in the details by someone who is), but I couldn't help but notice that today is a very interesting and unique day on the Jewish calendar. It is both Birkat Hachama (Blessing of the Sun) and Pesach (Passover, beginning at sundown tonight). Birkat Hachama only occurs once every 28 years and it is even rarer still for it to coincide with Pesach. Birkat Hachama can only be observed during the first quarter of the day and only then if the sun is visible to be blessed--if the sun is obscured by clouds Birkat Hachama cannot be observed. I thought this was especially interesting given how much time we spend concerned with cloud cover in our sport. It has been cloudy here in the SF Bay Area but the sun just broke through the clouds as I've been typing this. Anyways I'm sure someone who is Jewish will soon correct me on the details Blue skies, "It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014 -
coach jumps or solo jumps?
SivaGanesha replied to SivaGanesha's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thank you for your feedback. The jump total is correct but the vast majority of those jumps were in 1984 and 1985. I completed the then-requirements for an 'A' (in Canada) but didn't actually do the paperwork to get the license. So I'm basically starting again--for all practical purposes those old jumps don't "count" because (a) I no longer have my old logbook (b) it has been so long (c) many of the skills required for an 'A' now were not required then (d) most of the old jumps were on rounds, etc. For the purposes of this thread you should assume I have 15 jumps because that is the number of recent, logged, jumps I have and represents a much closer estimate of my true skill level. Thanks again for your feedback. At my DZ, and talking to other students, they seem to want the student to take some responsibility for their own training at this stage (post-AFF) of their skydiving career. Ie I think they want the student to form some opinion of what to do next (particular skills to acquire from a coach or practice solo) and not just expect a coach, instructor, or DZO to hand-hold them. At least that is my impression.
