nice, you were able to play the canon v.s. nikon, american v.s. european and .JPG v.s. RAW cards at the same time. An world-wide web triple-header. Like all the other camera settings just play with it and see if you like it. There are pre-made settings on the web as well, for you to download and test. I use them when shooting video on my 5D to drop the saturation and push the contrast for a more film-like look.

Nikon D70. Who/What shutter switch can I use?
grayhghost replied to Dreadswooper's topic in Photography and Video
it uses a mini-usb plug on the camera end you need to splice a bite/tounge/blow switch together with a: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/381577-REG/Nikon_25326_MC_DC1_Remote_Cord.html -
the Tokina is awesome! very sharp throughout the range don't get hung up on the zoom range because at the wide end of the spectrum zoom is much more distinct the only downside is the size I would recommend building a foam support for underneath the lens because the lens mount on smaller cameras is slightly too weak for a hard opening here is a shot at 11mm and f/2.8

New Digital Rebel... this one's gonna be a hit
grayhghost replied to pilotdave's topic in Photography and Video
The video out of the 5D is incedible when processed correctly. It sounds like 20fps may be a bit too slow for sports. The infrastructure for HD is not ubiquitous so shooting at 720 and 30fps would be fine for 'quick-n-dirty' -
I would hope that is the way of the future. A hybrid Electronic/Focal Plane shutter would be awesome, and can't be that far off with LiveView technology. The action sports subset of photography is so small that sync speed is not a top priority. Now that the Megapixel race has caught up with 35mm glass limitations, hopefully sync speed will be addressed in the near future.
-
This depends on the strobe. Alien Bee flash durations actually get slower as you power them down. You can see more spedlight durations here: http://www.joesmalley.com/flashes/ Yes. Three things are at play: shutter speed, peak flash duration, and sync speed (both camera and sync device) That is why the D70 has such a high resale rate for a 6MP DSLR. Nearly every skate, snow or mountain bike action photog has a D70 in the bag for just these capabilities. check out: http://erikseo.com/5.0/index.php for some great examples of high speed sync work using the D70

This is incorrect, with Electronic Shutters the flash power is able to remain constant throughout its range The D70(s) is an old (6MP) DSLR True, if you can get the flash exposure to be two stops more than the ambient light. The High Speed Sync functions of Focal Plane Shutter cameras (most common DSLRs) reduces the working range of the flash as you move up in shutter speeds, and only works when tethered to the camera.

. . . . and another thing to think about . . . most cameras will only sync to 1/250 or slower shutter speed I don't know if this is fast enough for skydiving The D70(s) will go to 1/1250 with PWs, as well as the G10, which I believe has a remote input
-
The ABs would probably work in the skydiving environment because of the close proximity. A little banter here: http://www.wheelsandwax.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5561 If you want to spend the money, the Pocket Wizards are the tried and true performers. It seems the Plus IIs are better for range and consistency than the MultiMax, but lack the multi channel feature required for large events (many different strobes) DSE, you are free to try out my PWs when the snow melts. Here is a shot using PW Plus IIs 1200 feet away

Okay, I have read David's blog and seem to be understanding. It seems like his analysis is just tackling the tonal range issues, but will the Quicktime Update also produce the "smoothing" effect you referred to earlier? I understand tonal range from photography, but what is the jaggedness that you found offensive in the early footage? Is it jagged edges on objects from compression or jagged/stuttered pans from shutter issues? thanks for all the insight so far

Ah. ok. Im confused, what does this mean exactly ? How can it be progressive but interlaced at the same time ? Can you maby explain this so that the average person (me) also understands what this means? Thanks! From here: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/cineform-software-showcase/115554-nutshell-what-cineform-2.html "A friend explained it to me (I have trouble understanding the concept as well) - yes I've read the details on the site and all the posts on here let's take a simple scene where a man stands with his hands by his side and then scratches his head. With 35mm we would have a series of sequential shots of the hand going up and down - complete images 1 through 50. With video we would have the same but the images would be interlaced - half images. With HDV we are trying to fit a lot of information on an existing media (miniDV) and so instead of complete images 1 through 50 we have a complete image 1 and then we only record the data that has changed (the moving hand) and then we have a complete image again at frame 8 or 15 (I'm not sure of the figures). If you want to look at frame 3 or 6, your NLE has to recreate that frame from the complete frame plus all the changes. Cineform does that before you start the editing process. there is also the fact that m2v or mpeg files are compressed files and editing direct from them means you lose even more data when you've finished. Cineform creates a files that 'looks' as good as the original in an AVI format which is better for editing. This may be completely wrong, absolute rubbish and totally untrue but it made sense to me so I bought the program." and "HDV( MPEG2) is packaged in groups of 15 frames so that anything other than the first needs the information from the others to assemble the picture. It uses less information to record. Cineform and other intermediates recreates the individual frames with all their information for easy editing and processing. IT consequently creates a bigger file depending on settings but normally 4 or 5 times the files size of HDV. Benefit is less load on the PC for editing( doesn't have to decode 15 GOP as well as manipulate effects required). Cons are bigger files sizes and consequently need for faster throughput from drives while editing."

in a nutshell, I need a $500 program (CineForm) to de-interlace the footage and make it look smooth, and CoreAVC to play it back?
-
any update on the smoothing DSE?
-
wow, I have been holding off on this camera because of the concerns you raised earlier, I am glad you chimed in please keep us updated most of my parachute jumps are pretty short these days
-
Can anyone post a review of this yet? I know DSE had some things to say about it and I hope he could elaborate here. Rolling Shutter issues? I am mostly interested in the video mode because I have a 5D and the photos are phenomenal. How bad is the panning, if you were shooting, say, a wingsuit flyby of the Bispen Road in Norway? How bad is the shake if you were flying it with the 15mm? thanks for any help in expensive decisions
-
I would avoid it due to the large arm wings but I am really scared about such things.

It does have the Phantom 2 logo. There are a bunch of different Shadow Prototypes floating around with different cuts and characteristics. This is a spin-off of Espen's Acro platform with Swiss Martin's intakes and new backfly intakes. It seems steep is the way to fly a WBR win . . . . 228,7 KM/h!
-
It is based on Espen's Shadow Prototype. I wanted: No grippers for an unencumbered pull. Smallish wings for easy acrobatics SPEED for increased control A steeper angle of attack for WBR 2009 Kathy translated my request and Robi built it for me, customer service at its finest! The container is a Gargoyle with wingsuit mods

I just got my new Phoenix-Fly suit, sadly about 1 foot of snow had piled up on the box outside. On the flip side, the skiing is awesome! Thanks to Kathy and Robi for helping to make this little screamer a reality. Review will be posted when the snow melts. http://www.baserigs.com/ http://www.phoenix-fly.com/

Any pictures of yourself while working ???
grayhghost replied to ArnoSchutte's topic in Photography and Video
thanks to Ms. Hecker for the shot -
thanks for letting me try out some of your suits, just don't let my Norwegian friends know Have you posted the photos from Sunday yet?
-
Not really. You got an incredibly elegant answer from one of the world's best mountain fliers, I would read and re-read it. Wingsuits add a good margin of safety when used to get away from an object. Mountain/terrain flying is another game entirely, which you will see if you choose to take that road. Take it slow, make it safe.
