B-b-b-b-b-b-bullshit. Ask any experienced static line instructor, unstable deployments from first-freefall students are not exactly uncommon and they usually work out just fine. Also, please, please, please carefully consider your audience when you say things like "I'd personally make every effort to deploy stable, unless time/altitude wasn't on my side." For experienced jumpers, trading 1000 feet for a stable pull might be an acceptable choice. For a student, like the person who started this thread, pull time is pull time, regardless of orientation.

The reserve flap reminds me of the Adventure Loft Briefcase (and a bunch of other 80s rigs), but it's been a decade since I've seen one and I don't remember the double-cable ripcord.

I know from experience that between two differently sized CRW canopies at the same wingloading, the larger canopy will out drive (horizontal speed) and out float (vertical speed) the smaller canopy. As the size gap increases the difference in performance can become quite pronounced. Larger formations, and even small formations with a wide range of sizes, have to take this into account when designing the formation.

I'm looking to step up from my 20U to a beefier straight stitch machine. In the last couple of days a 241-3 and a 111W100 popped up locally at pretty reasonable prices. Anybody have an opinion on these machines?
-
It absolutely can. In a rig with the cutter above the PC, if the cutter does not fully cut the loop it may trap the loop and prevent the reserve from deploying even if the handle is pulled.

What silicone product do you use for reserve closing loops?

I agree 100%. I always DIP the loop in the goo entirely, then just use the little cloth thing to wipe up. I rub it in between my fingers, like the book says. I think dipping might be a bit excessive, but I don't see how it could hurt. -
I got mine from Lord & Hodge: http://www.lordandhodge.com/ Get a full price list from them, they have great deals on dies and grommets. Their #0 will do brass and stainless. I don't remember the exact price but it was much, much cheaper than Paragear. You will be limited to brass #8s. The bigger stainless grommets can't be hand set.

My understanding, having attended the seminar: 5. Nobody is going to loose a rating for blowing an exit and taking 6 seconds to throw the drogue. This is aimed people who consistently blow exits, do 35 front loops out the door, or just go drogueless for laughs. 13. Report to the manufacturer. Not an issue for folks that use Eclipse gear, I guess. 16. I understood this to mean that if you haven't done three tandems in 90 days you aren't current and the normal recurrency procedures apply (you don't have to do three jumps to get current). 19. No further information was offered on this on. It sounded like the manufacturers don't have it figured out yet.

What is it called when...and is it legal?

Enthusiasm for Mr. Bills is inversely proportional to jump numbers, and for good reason. -
I use direct control on my freepacked CRW canopies because the slider can creep down as the canopy is lifting off, even with the primary stow at the tailpocket. With a bagged canopy this is much less likely to happen. I think that in most cases it would only benefit people who have trouble keeping the slider at the stops while packing. Then again, PD has introduced a form of direct control on Velocities that uses plastic snaps to attach the slider to the bottom skin of the canopy. They must have their reasons.

I hear this Kelly guy knows a lot about Infinitys. You can get reach him at vse@velocityrigs.com or 253-445-8790.

I ended up buying the 20U that I was asking about in the thread MEL linked to. In general it has been a good machine for me. It can handle a lot of the things a senior rigger is allowed to do and many things one isn't. For light duty work like most canopy work, replacing velcro on risers and toggles, and light binding it's great. Once you get past a couple layers of webbing or into any kind of stiffener it starts to bog down pretty badly. I've coaxed a couple pairs of toggles out of it, but it was rough going and probably not good for the machine long-term.

That statement is too absolute for my liking. Based on anecdotal evidence the Cypres does seem to be better at handling these types of scenarios than other AADs, but the algorithm is a trade secret so any analysis of how will work in these scenarios is a guess or assumption at best.
-
The lifetime of a Cypres 1 is 12 years and 3 months. The lifetime of a Cypres 2 is 12 years and 6 months. Jumping a Cypres up to that limit is not an issue if it is maintained properly. Jumping a Cypres past that limit is illegal.

John LeBlanc gave us an impromptu packing lesson during a weather hold at this year's Nationals. He recommended double stowing everything, even through the grommets. I think he also recommended always using large bands but don't quote me on that.
-
I'll go with option #3. I do my locking stows, then carry the bag to the container (without stowing anything else), sit down, and do the rest of the stows.

With no topskin rings, no dacron lines, and a sail slider it is almost certainly not a CRW or Hybrid Tri. The stupid single kill-line slider was (and maybe still is) standard on Triathlons. Finally, 23x14 sounds like a reasonable size for the slider. Keep in mind that basically every part of the Triathlon except for the basic airfoil has been tinkered with over the years, so comparing your 99 to other Tris that were potentially manufactured at different times and are not even the same size probably isn't a great idea. As somebody mentioned earlier, your best bet is to call Aerodyne and ask. Or just man up and jump it.

SkyJumpers may fly by during dinner...
indyz replied to labrys's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's a bungee type thing off of the Stratosphere in Vegas: http://www.skyjumplasvegas.com/ -
I've got 500 jumps on a Hybrid Tri. It opens, flies, and lands the same as the regular Triathlon. As for its suitability for CRW, I think it's great if you get all Dacron lines. The stock Hybrid lineset only has Dacron for the center A lines, which is fine as long as all of your wraps are on-center.

I busted one about a year ago, also on a Wings. The packjob was tight but under 22 lbs (measured after I put in a new washer and same length loop).
-
I usually buy stuff like this from Universal. They also have just about every accessory you could ever want, and have or can get any part for your machine. If you don't have both the straight stitch and zigzag presser feet, throat plates, and feed dogs, you probably want to pick those up as well (the part numbers are in your manual).
-
That was my only question when I got back to the hangar, "did you pull the pilot chute through the lines?" Attached is what I ended up with. Left-rear riser got pulled around.
-
It is certainly possible. My first reserve ride was caused by a packer flipping the bag between the front and rear risers on one side (or more likely, by allowing the riser or line group to flop over the bag).

I've never found anything that was likely to be fatal, but I do see a fair amount of shoddy work. Loops that are way too long, links installed in the wrong orientation, sliders upside down, service bulletins not complied with, RSL velcro mated improperly, major deviations from manufacturers directions, etc.
