  1. Hey Dan, I started jumping at Archway and did most of my first 60 jumps there before moving away last winter. Everybody that packed at Archway when I was jumping there was extremely experienced. I would have no problem trusting my gear to any one of them. Packing a parachute isn't that difficult from a mental effort standpoint, although it can be a pretty decent workout (especially student gear). It only gets easier with practice. If they are still doing things the same way, there will be a sign up sheet at manifest for packing classes. I'd sign up for one as soon as possible, although you probably won't be allowed to jump your own packjob until you are off of the static line at the earliest.
  2. Doesn't look good: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1734.html You can put just about any online retailer into Reseller Ratings and see what other people think about them. For what it's worth, I'm planning on buying a PC105 for next season and based on what I've heard on DZ.com and Reseller Ratings, I'll probably be getting it from Dbuys.com.
  3. Some negative feedback? http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2684.html
  4. Looks like it. The details are in the November Parachutist, page 18.
  5. Don't waste your money. It's crap. My copy is gathering dust. I couldn't even trade it away.
  6. I disagree. Over 100 jumps pulling my slider down on standard risers with soft links, then about 20 on mini risers with soft links, and last weekend 11 on standard risers with hard links and bumpers. On both mini and standard risers with slinks there was no appreciable difference in difficulty, IMHO. The hard links slow things down a little bit, but it still isn't much more difficult than soft links.
  7. No question in my mind, before releasing the brakes is best. Trying to get unstowed toggles through the slider grommets is a pain in the ass (I've done it a few times when I had brakes release during deployment). You risk having the toggle get hung up, which could lead to a cutaway. But I think that the best argument for stowing my slider before releasing the toggles is that I can do it without taking my eyes off of other canopy traffic.
  8. Because the are "fishing," trying to get bites. Replacing the letter f with ph is probably an homage to phreaking.
  9. Hey Tony, There is a dropzone about 45 minutes from your town in East Troy (more info). Stop by and check it out before you spend any money. You will need to rent gear while you are taking lessons anyway.
  10. This thread is deja vu. Several times over. But what the hell, I think things have changed since the last time we did this. My Linux desktop is pretty barren. I'll try to grab my work computer tommorrow. Thanks to Fast for taking that cool picture of me last weekend.
  11. I doubt it. Paragear has been around practically forever and probably wouldn't fold overnight. It looks like they are just having database trouble. I would try calling them tommorrow (800-323-0437, 9-4 Central time).
  12. Somebody sent me a PM telling me that a knot in the bridle was the way to go. Seems reasonable. I'll call Aerodyne to make sure, though.
  13. When I made my first post a little over two years ago I had 8 jumps and was considering quitting because I kept almost killing myself on 5 second delays. Now I'm one weekend away from 200 jumps. I competed in 4-way. I've been on a couple of successful 2 plane formation loads. I'm getting into CRW. Next year/season: Coach rating. 4-stack award and downplane (still have time for the downplane this year, I guess). C License. Wingsuit flight. Freefly dock. Hybrid. I have lots of room to improve in every aspect of my skydiving and so much new stuff to do, so it's hard to pick just a few things to concentrate on. 5 years: Still be around, still be having fun, still be learning.
  14. Anybody know how to rig one of these? I've used a Lightning with a retract before so I'm familiar with the general concept. Right now I've got the bridle, a pilot chute, and a curved pin, all unassembled. I'm almost certain that the bridle attaches to the canopy at the red (1000 lb. line) end and the PC goes on with a larks head at the white end. The only thing that I really don't know is what to do with the pin. The Lightning bridle had a little fingertrapped tab, but this one doesn't have anything.
  15. On my head or clipped to my chest strap, always. Edit to add: Usually on my chest strap. I'm not convinced that having it there is a great idea, though. I could see that buckle breaking in a violent crash.
  16. Breezed through high school (and, at the time, hated every minute of it), then didn't have my heart in it enough to last more than 3 semesters as a Computer Science major at a good school. Currently working on an associates in Computer Information Systems.
  17. The charge hit my card not too long before I got my license. A month or more to get a license doesn't seem to be uncommon.
  18. Well shit. When AggieDave made that post earlier today I didn't think that anyone would seriously suggest that the fires could be linked with terrorism, but here we are. Edit: Good god, there was some awful grammar in there.
  19. BIND might be free, but the bandwidth and the servers and the time it takes to maintain them aren't.
  20. 0:11:Tons About half of the DZ caravaned up to Wissota, WI for the weekend. 11 jumps all told. Some RW, some CRW, a hop n pop. Threw a pumpkin out of an airplane (missed the camper I was aiming for). First jump on a new canopy. First jump at a new DZ. First multi-plane shot (8-ways out of 182s). And so much more. It was fun and I am exhausted. Oh yeah, one more thing: My Neptune crashed this weekend. Hard lockup; full stop. Last load of the day, I turned the backlight on because it was a little dark. Did a fun 2-way for a friend's 100th jump. We broke it off around 4500 and I pulled at 3000. I flew around a little and set up for my pattern. I didn't look at my altimeter again until I was on the ground. Had a nice landing in the peas. I looked at the altimeter and it said I was at 440 feet, descending at 32 ft/sec. Pressing the buttons didn't do anything. The backlight was off and stayed off. The beer light was on so I just threw it in my gear bag and headed off to the party. The next morning it was still on the same screen. Pulling the battery reset it just fine. I heard that there is a firmware update available, so I guess I'll install that just in case.
  21. It's on the OmniSkore wesbite (here for the unmotivated). Freestyle 402 Round 7.
  22. BTW, there is a great video of Bets up at the OmniSkore site. Who's the headdown dude in the background?

    What IMer?

AOl, because it's the most popular. But I use Trillian on Windows and GAIM on Linux, so I can do all of the big ones from inside the same program.
