  1. NO!! Cypres- A backup safety device used is skydiving that is worn only to fire a reserve in the event that the jumper has became unconscious/unable to do so in freefall. This device should NOT influence your decision on what type of jumps you go on, give you comfort on going on jumps above your ablility/risk level, nor should you rely on it in an emergency situation. It is stictly a backup device in case you become unconscious due to a collision/heart attack/ double dis-location of your shoulders/black out from too much red bull. cypress---some type of tree
  2. Apparently!! Good observation!! Since the students can't jump with out one, (according to bsr's) then they are device dependent too. I get it now... THAT'S the whole problem with modern/progressive instructing. We teach our students from day one to be device dependent. So we have people who will jump on dives outside of their acceptable risk level/ ablilities because they have a cypres (which I think is a poor ideal) and people who are device dependent from the beginning because I make them wear a cypres during their student progression. Maybe I need to change the way I teach about the cypres. Maybe I shouldn't tell them that it's a strictly backup device that adds a layer of safety incase they fail. I think the students shouldn't jump at all because....
  3. LOL!! Yep jumping ALL day...If your not here, you won't jump! Who said the I was a "he"?? The radio person got the words," One, Two, Three, Three, Three, Three, Three, Three" out before he touched down.(I think I heard 6 three's) I agree with you about pulling ratings...I heard both I's were jumping with a cypres too. These device dependent I's have got to go!!
  4. I have done aff without a cypres when I first got my rating. After maturing as a aff jm and being in dives where things got very hairy, I saw no reason not to have the cypres as a backup. What has happened to the aff I's who have died doing aff???? You never really know what your going to get from that student. I've had some that barely got by showing everything they needed to show on the ground to go on the dive....then they went up and did great. I've also had one that could repeat everything I taught them word for word and showed me the proper technique exactly as I showed them....then went up and did horrible. After 9 years of doing aff and seeing all the stuff I've seen, I see no reason not to have one. Nor do I see a reason to do an aff without a cypres just to prove I'm not "device dependent". I look at it as a intelligent backup to have a cypres. So are all TI's device dependent too? Or do you just not turn yours on when you do tandems because you don't want to be device dependent? Do you jump with a cypres on just because it's a FAR?? Or do you not care about the liability the DZ will have when you go in with a cypres turned off? (all hypothetical questions..but would like to know opinions of the I's who think I'm device dependent on AFF. Ron, bilvon, derek?)
  5. Fatality reports from last year.....11 deaths with good canopies above their head at one point.... a little of the breakdown: 3 deaths due to intentional low turns to build speed..... 3 deaths due to non-intentional low turns to avoid obstacles.... (other 5 were.... crw accident, somebody catching cut-away gear)
  6. Funny... 10 min. ago I saw a 190lb guy with a 290 land without flaring AT ALL!!!! outcome? probably could have stood it up..However the winds were blowing a steady 16 mph and we have excellent student gear. (ZP mantas & navigaters) *before anybody starts throwing BSR's around...we are waivered to 18 MPH because of our location and gear.
  7. NO IT'S NOT!!!! It's a personal choice. This is not black and white.... I choose to do AFF and tandems with a cypres and won't without one. One is because it's the law, the other is because i just think it's an INTELLIGENT thing to do. I am not accepting risks that are over my head or ability JUST because I won't do aff without it. I don't rely on my cypres to "save" me. Can't you guys see the difference?????? How many threads are we going to go through? Edit to add: I have met people who would do something that is beyond their ability/risk level just because they had a cypres on....I think this is a DUMB idea... But, not ALL people who choose to do certain jumps only if they have an AAD are getting themselves over their acceptable risk level. You can't blanket the entire skydiving world as "device dependent" because they choose to only do AFF, tandems, freefly, 400 ways, or anything else only if they have a cypres. These threads come off like," If you jump with an AAD your doing stuff outside your abilities." Do we really want that impression on our younger jumpers? ** If you only choose to go on a jump because you have a cypres and think it'll save you in a bad situation, THEN you need to look at your priorities...
  8. Well, it looks like your in my category with this...You and I are both "device dependent" because we choose not to do certain skydives without an AAD. Or at least that what several people in this thread think. Personally I don't think I'm device dependent nor do I think that doing AFF is over my head since I got my rating in 1996. I will not do AFF/tandems without an AAD. One is by law, the other is a personal choice....It's just not a black and white thing. I choose to jump with an AAD on AFF because it's an intelligent thing to do....NOT because I think AFF is over my head or too "risky". I personally know 3 people walking the earth today because of cypres.
  9. When was the last time you were carded to buy cigarette's!!!!!
  10. ***Edited to add: BITE ME!!! What makes you think that they are further south than us?? "someday.......,(sat) you'll ache like I ache!!! ps: I probably wouldn't come back if I did that!!
  11. Only thing I've been sleeping with is the pilots dog lately!!!(she is a pure-boxer though) I keep telling myself,"Self, you LOVE Ohio. I can't figure this place out though. Sunday there was 18 inches of snow 14 miles north of here. Monday's high was 61!!!! [back on topic] And if you think the weather is nuts.....you should meet some of these Ohio women!! (Oh wait, you did!!) PS!!! IT JUST STARTED TO ICE OUTSIDE
  12. Smartest marketing move I've ever seen!! They were just starting to go nationwide and needed some help... Those ad's gave them a TON of extra exposer on other TV and radio shows. Now whether they meant to have such an obnoxious commercial that everybody hated and would talk about, I don't know.....but it worked!!
  13. ONLY EVERYTIME i eat there!!!!!
  14. I think it was the green extentions at Dublin.....You know, Lee is a pretty big...almost bearlike... who tend to be tops which makes you a b......
  15. No, reading all these post really got me thinking. It bothers me now that for the past 9 years I wouldn't do AFF, camera work, tandems, freeflying, and large formations without a cypres. I always thought that I was capable and within my acceptable risks. Now I don't think so. I'm starting to realize that I AM device dependent and that's a terrible thing in this sport. I guess the positive side to this is that I have about $14,000 worth of gear I can sell and use while I find another job. Thanks for opening my eyes!!! ps:NO decision in skydiving should be made JUST BECAUSE you have a cypres on your back. I think this sum's up about 2 pages worth.
  16. I think a 400 carries much more risk than a 20 way. IMO I think I am capable and qualified to be on such a jump. IMO I think there is more risk to the point I wouldn't do it without a cypres.(look at all the past fatalities on record jumps) I can look out for myself, but I'm worried about the other 100 people in my quadrant. I can't keep an eye on all of them. I'm not using the cypres to rationalize...I'm using it as a backup to that guy I can't see coming from behind/above. So I guess I'm device dependent and maybe I should take a good hard look at whether I should be jumping or not.
  17. Everybody's emotions are high right now.....Maybe we shouldn't feed the guy that has come in here just to get under our skin???
  18. I wouldn't go on a 400 way(where everybody has proven their ablility to be on the jump) without a cypres.....does that make me device dependent?
  19. How'd I know that?!!! Probably not the tasting your looking for....but I guess It'll have to do!
  20. Uh oh.....relying on Jacko for something? See ya at the tasting!!
  21. I think I saw Blue Sky Adventures some where on the piece. But I'm not positive that it happened there. I agree....but sometimes you have to get the drogue out. It looked like a combination of poor student position(de-arched) along with poor TM presentation into the relative wind.(common side-spin situations) Why there was another person on the step with him I don't know. It looked a little crowded out there. Was it a true S/L or an IAD jump? I'm not very familiar with IAD, but I always seen the JM on the inside of the plane during the student jumps. Thankfully he is a tough old man and got through that landing. Watching these video's reminds me why we have a cut-off age for s/l and aff students.....
  22. I'm sure your "hair-dresser" will be happy to give you a "personal" photo-session......
