Entitlements in the form of medicare and unfunded social security payments make up the majority of our future deficit. Say what you will, medicare and social security would be in good shape if the right decisions were made over the years. It is their elected officials that put us here, but don't worry they won't have to face the consequences. It isn't medicare and social security that is the problem. The problem is the way that the programs have been managed, for years. Social security should be self funded by all of the payroll deductions made after the years. Why isn't it, because they used that money, they spent it. Medicare would have costs under control if efforts were made in the past. Pass the lube to your grandson grandma, he is going to need it. I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter what party. It is really a ponzi scheme where the future of our children, and to a large extent the current working generation, was mortgaged. Neither sides proposals have come close to having enough deficit reduction to solve that part of the problem. Even if you extend the debt ceiling beyond 2012 you are only kicking the can down the road. They can't even get there shit together for a stop gap measure. They have a snowballs chance in hell putting together the mix of spending cuts, entitlement reform, and tax increases that is actually needed to fix this quandry. If they prioritize payments and right now there are 20 buckets in order of priority that are all getting paid. Social security is in bucket number 5. The treasury has a shortfall of 10 buckets because we hit the debt limit. When that happens bucket number 5, social security is still going to get paid. Social security won't have priority over interest payments, but that fact alone doesn't mean the statement that social security checks might not get paid relevant. It should have been implemented when social security was first introduced. We have been screwing this up for decades! If social security checks stop then seniors can look long and hard in the mirror. It was their generations of elected officials that raped the system. Now I am paying for their level of benefits, because they already blew through their own money, and I won't see shit for benefits when it is my time. I wouldn't mind if social security was done away with all together. You reap what you sow. Heard something on NPR today but I wasn't paying full attention. They either said that for each .1% or 1% increase in the interest rate on our debt we would end up with another trillion dollars tacked on to the deficit. Doesn't matter any way. Even if we get things done in the lick of time we are likely to see a downgrade. The disfunctional show in Washington, and the fact that any debt ceiling increase is going to fall far far short of the actual deficit cutting that we need has all but sealed our fate. Any yes interest will get paid first. Interest goes before everything else, because everything else gets exponentially more expensive if you stop paying the interest and default. You must have been impacted by the bankers "poor choices". I don't think the bankers have impacted you much at all, they really haven't impacted me. My 401K has mostly recovered. Most of TARP has been paid back so I don't expect much flow through impact from that. Those piece of shit bankers lent me 190K for my last house at a nice interest rate. They lent me some money to go to college as well when I was back in school. No free federal college money for me. Sure they were drinking the KoolAide with the subprime debacle. Guess what the Federal government you love as the perfect model of effeciency pushed the banks to lend to people they shouldn't have. And the home owners who bought the houses were drinking the KoolAide too! Those evil fucking bankers! Maybe I don't think they are so evil because I live within my means. I took out loans so I could go through college and get a better paying job. I pay all my bills, and I try to make smart financial descions.
