  1. Your DVR doesn't have a 6 pin connection, does it?
  2. I struggled with ths for the first 20/30 jumps as well. Two different instructors gave me differing advice, combining their advice worked for me. YMMV; 1-pick up your vision so you're not looking at the ground, this will alleviate the fear/feeling of intense ground rush and help you time you flare better 2. As you feel that you need to flare, hesitate; flare when you feel your at the last possible second of flaring. Only by flaring too soon or too late will you figure it out. It doesn't vary greatly from canopy to canopy, IMO, but that's based on my owning only five canopies so far. Maybe that opinion will change when I've owned ten. The whole "Teeth/Tits/Tush" sequence (Some call it Eyes, Chest, All the way down) starts as a three-stage process, but eventually becomes one fluid motion. You might hire someone to shoot your landings and have an instructor go over the vid with you in slow motion. That should help a lot.
  3. Even though it's not skydiving related, you might find this video project interesting. Dailies were done on the cheap consumer version of Sony Vegas, and roughcuts done on same. Final version was finished in professional version of Vegas using a couple plugins, but overall, it was completed in 3 days after 2 days shooting. the cool part about it is, the guy that edited it is a musician, not a video editor. He just figured it out fast. If a musician can, anyone can
  4. If you're not capturing your HDV from the firewire port, how are you getting it into your computer? There are three options for getting media from an HDV camcorder: -Firewire/1394/ilink (They're all the same) -Component out (This is HD, so you need a fairly high end capture card) -Composite out (this is always SD on all camcorders, HD cannot be carried over composite, which is the single yellow RCA on most systems) Some have HDMI output, but currently only Black Magic Design and Convergent Design make an HDMI card, ranging from 300.00 to 1100.00 in cost. Regardless, plug the Firewire cable into you computer and see if it makes the cursor blink. If it does, this is the first indication your cable and Firewire port are good, the next step is finding out why the drivers aren't connecting. If your Firewire card isn't OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) then your computer won't read from the camera. One of these links might be of help (requires free reg to read, however).
  5. Actually, the yellow signifies composite, not component. Component isRGB/Red, Green, Blue. I'd be very surprised if he had component in the computer. Aside from that... Coco, what version of Windows are you running? It may be that the DVHS drivers aren't installed, or tha your 1394 card isn't functioning correctly, the cable could be bad, or that your camera's 1394 output isn't working. What: -Camera brand/model? -Computer cards/ports available?

What you're seeing there is an MPEG skip, where there is enough difference between an I frame and a DCT frame. This is an anomoly of how MPEG works, and it does have moments where it can get weird. Now that I've seen it, it's very easy to identify, and in post, quite easy to deal with, but it's an irritation. I was expecting to see macroblocking, unusable frames, or more. You're flying with "inexpensive HD" and not high end HDV. If this is a serious concern for you, then your options are limited. All MPEG format camcorders run the risk of blocked DCT frames. AVCHD, HDV, and even XDCAM *can* have this issue. When the camera is unstable combined with tremendous changes in the contrast and frame content, it can create issues, and sometimes does. You're in that "sometimes" group. Rolling shutter is a part of this problem, you've got it, but it's right on the verge. Next jump, set your shutter speed at 1/60 and see if that fixes your issue no matter what position you're in. I suspect it may. I wish my head down was worth a damn, but it's not, and I can't fly with others at this stage and feel like both of us are safe, or I'd be trying to replicate it. Send me the .m2t that I'd initially requested, and I can track the frames quite easily. The rendered avi removes that ability, since the header is stripped from the file.
  7. No conspiracy theory, it feels fake. He's got too much control to be "out of control" and his movements seem to be pre-planned or at least intentional. Adding to that is the attitude that encompasses the dialog. Maybe it's because I don't speak french, dunno. But the entire thing feels fake. Maybe it's a cultural difference. Doesn't really matter, it looks like it was fun, and maybe challenging to shoot
  8. IMAX isn't considered HD, because it's film, but that's of little debate-value. 70mm is essentially 4k (in terms of what we can currently work with in the digital realm). Going by size alone, there are lots of monster camera rigs that have been jumped as chest mounts or other types of floater/separates including Bill Cole's Imax jump. But...for whatever reason, the OP is asking about 4:4:4 digital cams vs film cams.
  9. I quoted you to expand on your point while replying to Lowie :) For a further explanation see my sig And the reason I said that was that i am not confident about how my chte reacts when I touch my rears instead of the steering lines, let alone what happens when I flare that way. For now, I will not touch my rears unless very high up. If my chute doesn't react the way I thought it would, I'll still have time to cut away if in doubt. If you want to achieve your A license you'll need to get confident in how your rear risers behave when you start pulling on them, as it's a requirement to do turns with rear-risers/no brakes in order to pass your A. You may need this ability when someone opens too close to you or you open too close to them, and you're heading towards each other. no time for brakes....

I googled for it just a bit ago, and can't find the article (I saw this in a print mag a couple years back, not online) but did find quite a bit of discussion about the subject on the cascadeclimbing.com community site.
  11. I don't know that anyone has used a Genocide/Genesis in freefall, I know the Viper has never been used in freefall, the Arri D has been in freefall, HDCAM SR has been in freefall, I know a guy that is intending/planning the RED in freefall. The Dalsa Origin has been used in freefall. Electric Entertainment/Dean Devlin wanted to use the Genesis in freefall, but couldn't figure a safe way to do it. All of the movie "Flyboys" was shot with the Genesis, and they did use great imagination in placement/mounting. "Uncompressed HD" also refers to any 22:11:11 color sample with up to 3:1 compression which would encompass a lot of capture devices you're not mentioning. Why do you ask?
  12. Mike McGowan used to have/may still have one he made, catch up w/him at Eloy....

I'm not a rigger, I just play one on TV, so discount whatever I say, as it's all second-hand. First, local riggers tell me that the Home Depot fast/rapide links are cheap Chinese steel, and aren't built for consistency. They also tend to fail early, and one local rigger claims it's a fast way to experience a mal. Second, even marginally overtightening the barrel supposedly will split the barrel once pressure is applied to the top/bottom of the link. Riggers here use only fairly expensive links from a couple of sources; maybe they do this just to sell the more expensive part, but I somewhat doubt this is their motivation. I can't imagine that a couple extra bucks is worth the hassle they go through to get them if they could get them at Home Depot. For climbing, there was a climber killed some years ago using a cheap (asian?) fast link, and an article was written about the testing load between Maillon rings and cheap junker rings. There was a huge difference in that the cheap links broke well before their rated strength and the Maillon links broke far beyond their rated strength. I'd assume this is the same issue with deployment. I'm sure someone more informed than I will chime in.

I'd like to see what it looks like, yes. Do you have a UV or other protection over your lens?
  15. Well...just be sure to never jump with a window between you and your subject, and you'll prolly be OK.
  16. Shooting through car window, UV on lens, both/either could have caused this, depending on the angle of light.

No. I have a Cookie box, but am not using it at this time. The cam is open to the elements, I only use gaffers tape on the screen to be sure it stays closed. I'm planning on cutting my Cookie box to make it more useful, at some point in time.
  18. I have a Schneider on order from BandPro, but it hasn't come yet, so no opinion to offer. Century/Schneider have always offered pretty good product for the price, no doubt. I'm curious to see what they resolve, but I'll bet it's around 600-700 lines. Not the best, but stll quite good for skydiving without putting serious mass on the head. I should have my lens before NAB (Next week) so will be specific when it arrives.

I'd like to see these lines, but your description sounds a lot like rolling shutter artifacts. With a CMOS cam, rolling shutter will appear at high shutterspeeds. This is perhaps why I don't see it on mine; I'm usually setting up to match 24p at some point, so shooting at 1/60 is a habit.
  20. Couldn't agree more. It's one thing to have a handle on the web, usually one which others know you by, it's quite another to sign on with a new name, never posted before, no profile, and the first post denigrates someone or a product, leaving them no way of knowing who you are or how to reach you. I've found the folks at Vigil behind only L&B and Rigging Innovations in speed of response. They seem to struggle with communicating in English, that might put some off, but they respond very quickly.
  21. No different here, bud...Supposed to be mid/upper 50's this time of year. I've still got 5 feet of snow under my eves, and nearly a foot of snow across the lawn. Weatherman says balmy 66 tomorrow. he's also 2500' lower than I am. Toxins are bad, but cleanable. Global warming isn't so easy, not even after "An Inconvenient Truth."
  22. Prolly woulda been funnier if it hadn't been staged?
  23. Global warming has as much to do with ocean currents as it does with air currents. Maybe spend a little time talking to the folks up north; they'll be the first to tell you the weather patterns have changed. Whether you agree or not. the Inupiat are politically active for the first time in their history. The Saami's of norther Sweden, Finland, Russia are also very politically active on this issue, whereas they've never been much involved in the past. Mayvbe check out the Inuit Global Council website. They had a great series in Indian Country Today a while back. Or maybe the people living there just aren't educated enough to know what's happening.
  24. Pilotdave, thanks for posting this info. Over the weekend, had a track-off with a tall, skinny kid with tracking pantz, I was wearing jeans and sweatshirt and outweigh him by 40lbs. He didn't have a prayer. I was farther out an significantly faster. surprised me that even with his pantz, I was roughly 200 yards ahead. rules were similar, gotta dump by 3K. Can't wait to try it again wearing *my* tracking pantz.
