I'll be there.

That maybe I'll remove an eyeball and replace it with a camera. Very sweet technology, IMO, and since this guy is already missing an eyeball... we'll see how he does. Wouldn't this be sweet for skydiving? Talk about a true "cam-eye."

AAD issues when traveling to and from New Zealand
DSE replied to Feeblemind's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Pursuant to your post, I contacted the Aviation Security Service via a friend in the Film Location Office. The letter I received in response: Good morning Douglas Your e-mail was forwarded to me by my colleague Steven Gregory. In order to respond to your concerns and provide you with an explanation outlining the reason why Aviation Security Service will not permit parachutes fitted with an Automatic Activation device to be carried by air as checked or carry on baggage; I shall refer your e-mail to the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (who are the competent authority in New Zealand for the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations) for a response. Regards Jennifer Iggulden Senior Sergeant Operations DDI: (09) 255 6020 Fax: (09) 275 1944 Cell Phone: (027) 4718 159 E Mail: jiggulden@avsec.govt.nz It's like a scene from a bad movie. -
Personally, I don't use Dynamic Link, but most of those who do swear by it. I rarely stay in the Adobe suite, but again...those that do swear by it. Jarno probably has better input because he uses AE all day... and perhaps uses Adobe Media Encoder vs a third party tool. Nothing wrong with an external scratch disk. ReadyBoost might help you out with speed though, depending on your OS. Generally, editing from an external is going to be a lot faster than editing straight off a card.

As long as it is Pro Duo compatible, anything will be just fine.
-
The first? Damn dude, just how old are you? Older than you, I promise. Almost as old as Airtwardo. I remember when wingsuits were made of whalebone. Tony wishes he looked as good as me.

Depends on his knowledge level. Premiere CS4 has a bit of a learning curve, iMovie doesn't. the techniques presented in Chris Warnock's "Tandem Videos Made Easy" apply to all NLE's, but the included free templates only work with Sony Vegas.

I'm not Native American, I'm "indigenous." Or "Aboriginal." Or maybe "First American" is the proper term this week (Sorry political correctedness on the brain at the moment due to some shenanigans in DC.) Yes, YES! I believe we own the original trademark, slogan mark, patent, and copyright for anything with T-Bird or Thunderbird in it. I'll take mine in Blue/Yellow, please? You already have my measurements.
-
You got it in one. Premiere does do some conversions as well, because the AVCHD decode information isn't part of Apple's CPU coding. If you can't put a card reader on and edit straight from the card, it's not "native." Premiere builds a copy on the hard drive, so it acts like it's native. Premiere CS4, however, is the fastest/best solution for AVCHD on the Mac at this time, IMO. Caveat Emptor, I'm on the beta team for CS4, so I'm a bit biased that way.

Need help on Home depot Demo!!
DSE replied to recovercrachead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Then call USPA and speak with someone who handles demo insurance, knows demos. That would be Jim Crouch. I don't believe they're "a waste of time." I've had to put on some pretty unique events and there has *always* been someone to help me. They have language to help you sell a demo, they have printed tools for the demos, and other resources to help you. Either way, you'd probably do best sitting down at a computer, printing out a planned agenda from take off to landing, with proper grammar, spelling, diagrams, photographs, time markers, etc. USPA will more or less tell you the same thing. It's a sales job, nothing more. Sell em' on the idea. Unless you have a person with prejudices, this is fairly easy, or at least it has been for me. -
it's not a manufacturer problem, it's an Apple problem. There are thousands of threads on the internet about Apple's refusal to natively manage MPEG file sources for the past four years. Apple won't do it, and it's to their detriment. Because of Apple's stupidity (cheapness), I carry a MacBook too...but use Bootcamp for Windows at least 70% of the time. As far as camera...there is *nothing* in the realm of "small" that uses anything but HDV (MPEG2) or AVCHD (MPEG4) and Final Cut does not natively support either format. Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Sanyo, JVC, Samsung, they all make AVCHD cams, none of which Apple wishes to be compatible with. There are third party tools, as discussed in the CX100 thread. If you have a niece or daughter to edit for you, speed probably isn't a concern, cuz it's slow.

The CX105 is 50i The CX100 is 60i. If you can get a 50i cheaper in the states, then yes...it's worth it to probably buy it here.
-
In terms of nomenclature, there is no "NTSC" nor "PAL" HD. There is only 50i and 60i. But...people will continue to refer to 50i as PAL and 60i as NTSC for many years to come. Every video app in the world can convert 60i to 50i, but you won't be able to playback 60i to a 50i monitor in most cases. It's because US/Canada/Japan use 60Hz electrical systems and most of the rest of the world is a 50Hz system, hence the two framerate variations.
-
yes, it is. There are fewer than 80k early units out there, so it's easy to forget... but yes. The BD player must be BD 1.1 or higher.
-
Anything that will play BD content will also play AVCHD burned to a standard DVD5. In other words, you can put HD content, with menus, on a standard DVD 5, using standard burner, and a BD player will play it.

The FAQ/Sticky covers this, but... Anything that has moving parts and isn't tape isn't appropriate for skydiving. You can shoot with say...CX100 (Sony cam) and it shoots to flash cards (Memory Stick Pro Duo). That will download to your Mac, it'll take some time. As has been said at least 100 times here, AVCHD (which is the codec most of the flash cameras shoot to) isn't Mac-friendly, but iMovie/FCS/FCE can all import/convert it.

I attended...And learned a LOT from the old guard. I'm younger than you, Airtwardo (not by much) but I'll bet I can brag more miles under my belt. Jerry, I knew what you meant. If you can make it to this reunion, I surely would take the opportunity. Sitting at a table and hearing the old stories, trying to figure which ones were really true and which ones were figments of a feeble imagination was a great experience. Ted Strong sure had some goodies, so did Bullit Bob, Jim, Howard, and we even had a US Senator and Astronaut there to bullshit right along with em'. wish I could attend this year.

Need help on Home depot Demo!!
DSE replied to recovercrachead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I find this *very* difficult to believe, having spoken with many folks at USPA about a number of different topics, and was always handed off to someone who knows what's up regardless of the question. Not everyone at USPA is a skydiver (thank god). The majority of those that work at PD aren't skydivers either. I take comfort in knowing that when I look above my head. It's wonderful you want to promote the sport; that's terrific. This article from Brian Germain may help you with ideas. Get someone to help you with your presentation. If you speak like you've written here, you won't come across as the PRO rated skydiver that a corporate executive probably relates with. Grammar matters a lot to most execs. Rather than telling the world you have a CYPRES (they probably don't care, and you don't want to be presenting it as anything but a screwdriver in a toolbox anyway), consider presenting the thrill of human flight, the excitement, the fun, the social climate. Explain that it's not a safe activity, but that the risks are significantly mitigated. I'm sure more people lose fingers to powersaws sold by Home Depot than skydivers who go "splat." Maybe work with the local DZ to get coupons for a tandem, perhaps even have a drawing for a tandem or half-off a tandem. Explain to the execs that hundreds of thousands of successful jumps happen each year. I don't know the last fatal incident involving a PRO demo in the US, but we're pretty safe. Have a written, well-described action statement complete with photos, landing patterns, etc. And still be prepared to be told "no." -
My opinion is that if you need a lens in the next say...90 days, I'd get it as necessary. -No matter what, with the Schneider acquisition of Century, the glass ain't gonna be cheap. -If they announce at NAB, it'll be at least 3 months or longer before it hits the streets. -the .55 is a "known" lens. Whatever is new (if anything), will not be. I don't know if it's a .2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8, and it might be that they've got new tele's but not new wides. Or maybe nothing at all. I got a teaser last week from their PR department; that's all I know.

Nice play on words. :-) Raynox does have the edge; it's bigger, flatter, and has more surface area. Will you note the difference? On high quality monitors, maybe. I (personally) am usually willing to sacrifice a small amount of quality for my neck and snag point for day-to-day use. Tandems, meh...I'll use the Century. If it's for a commercial piece that doesn't have budget to warrant an EX, I'll use the Raynox. I'm really looking forward to something Century is hinting at for release at NAB. BTW, for anyone that wants NAB passes, you have about 2 weeks to make the request via PM. I've got floor passes...

Freefall Progression help for Newbie
DSE replied to scholarkyle's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A jump is a jump is a jump. Including tandem jumps. However, one could not qualify for an A license solely on tandems nor S/L. -

HD and widescreen will make the shake more apparent. It may be that your camera isn't as tight in the box as it should be, could be the front of the camera is floating up/down. I've got one sit jump and 6 tandems with the CX, no problems at all, but...HD and widescreen will make any apparent problems much more apparent.
