Actually, some popular slogans are crocks of shit. For the most part, that's one of them. .................................................................... Okay, I will step up to that challenge. I hold two Exeminer ratings: Rigger and Tandem Instructor. Over the past year I have packed more than 200 reserves and done more than two hundred jumps with tandem students. I also trained three new riggers and a couple of new tandem instructors. Skydiving isn't one of those applications, and if you read the post in context, I've suggested quite the opposite. In skydiving, you *have* to demonstrate that you possess the skills in order to be able to teach them to others. I'll retract the parenthetical "for the most part" and say "in some instances."

Looks like it was a great boogie. Kinda wish I'd headed east to play. Congrats to all the new birds, and congrats to John on his 1000th jump!

Congrats!! And as Sparky said, a very nice post to read.

I don't believe so, Saskia. I'm waiting for another GoPro so I can rip it up. Trunk had one he's opened up; I don't know that the voltage passes back from the USB port. I failed to make that another point in my "why not GoPro for tandems.

It's a valid question in the way you've framed it, however; Has there ever been a time in skydiving where I/E's have had a teaching certificate whether by intent or by chance? If not, is it appropriate to place greater expense, time, and challenges on an already very challenged industry? Do the costs (fatalities/major injuries) justify the end result that *might* improve by demanding teaching certifications of those I/E's?

The picture quality of the GoProHD is better than what an old PC series camcorder can offer. However; GoPro is fixed lens width. No zoom capability whatsoever. And the width is kinda ugly for a lot of tandem video aspects. GoPro is HD, and therefore needs to be downconverted for SD output (like on a DVD). That conversion takes time to render/resample. That time becomes expensive when your goal is speed, such as in a tandem or similar video operation. Audio is for crap on the GoPro's. It's impossible to get good, let alone GREAT sound on a GoPro or similar. Battery life is marginally better on the GoPro's, but there is no preview to power up. Each camera has it's pros and cons. Take the price out of the discussion and weigh what is most important to you, to your workflow, and provides the product that your DZ wants to output. The "correct" answer could fall into either court.

Drive a couple hours north and buy dinner for Shell666. Hang out in Calgary's Chinatown (fun place). Check out the Glenbow Museum (one of the largest aboriginal musems in North America). Watch some hockey. Wear lotsa thermals and jump. Drive to Red Deer and see the sights. I'll be in Calgary on Friday.

I understand your point (and agree). Yet if the S&TA is merely taking the word of someone that they've done the jumps...then the system is still going to fail. One case in point: Instructor leaves our DZ with expired ratings and 1600 jumps. Bearing in mind Utah DZ's close in winter, same instructor has renewed ratings and 4K jumps 6 months later. Is this a rare or common occurence? Can it be avoided/prevented?

Handbrake is a solid converter tool for the mp4 codec found from the GoPro. It'll even convert directly to VC1 or avi, which is what MovieMaker likes.

Actually, some popular slogans are crocks of shit. For the most part, that's one of them. Read again: "For the most part." Taken out of context of the field in which I work, I might agree with you. Kallend's continual assertion that those who teach skydivers to teach shouldn't be doing so simply because they have no teaching credential, it's absurdity at it's best and pompous posturing at its worst. Most skydivers were taught by individuals with no teaching credentials whatsoever. A teaching certificate would likely not have prevented this tragedy. A good teacher is able to connect and comprehend the challenges of the individuals they're teaching. Whether it's a tandem student, AFF student, or wingsuit student. A teaching certifcate doesn't at all assure that a teacher/instructor will apply the information they learned during their education process.

Three of us did a jump this evening in Dan's memory, Karen. Although I didn't know Dan for very long, it was a pleasure having met and spent a little time with him. Fly free, Dan.

A-there are -far- more people with ridiculously impressive credentials to teach that can't teach for shit. B-Passion coupled with a deep understanding of a non-complex subject may easily take the place of a lack of classroom experience and "paper" credential. In the real world (in many applications), those that can't do, teach. In the skydiving world, one has to first prove they can do (outside of a vacuum) before they're allowed to teach. I'm sure everyone can think of some terrible skydivers with phenomenal teaching credentials that they wouldn't ever want to see training a student.

Didn't know there was much public about it, but Adam was recently at Elsinore, and talking about how he was originally building the wing for a sponsored BASE/skydiving team. Nice to know there is vid.

Glad we agree on sumthin', Rob. More than once we've all seen Coach on Friday, AFFI next week. Requiring # of Coach jumps signed for by an instructor (IMO) is more valuable than requiring a year, because a year could go by without a single FJC or single coach jump. And...folks inflate their jump numbers in many cases, but having someone actually sign for them might make a diff.

Who has killed someone? In combat or for self defence.
DSE replied to rhys's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not so much dwelling on people dying in a horrible fashion, it is just the glorification of it, that bewilders me. Outside of Christianity and Muslims liking the idea of laying down their life for god, who specifically, glorifies dying or killing? I don't see how such retarded thinking has anything to do with owning/not owning firearms. -
I think I may have found something interesting
DSE replied to quade's topic in Photography and Video
GREAT find!! With CES around the corner, you've given me a destination to check out. ADS Technology has something like this, but WD has some features theirs doesn't. I've got a system set up for debrief that sucks the media off the card and lays it on a timeline immediately, but this is a better concept. The only thing missing is slow mo (according to specs, anyway). -
I've seen guys use a small bit of gaffers tape to remove the slop. I think any single point mount will have a bit of slop in it.
-
Same way you deliver VHS tape to someone who "only" has a VHS player. DVD will of course, still be around. But the primary delivery mechanism is moving to online delivery. And it's MUCH better for the DZ to do so.
-
Unless you already have the Goldmember, I'd recommend either the Skysystems Quad or the Cookie Flatlock (or Padlock) Those are all very solid systems with no slop nor movement.

Submissions closed. We have a winner, as the three judges all agreed on one person, but two different shots. Congrats to Karen Lewis, winner of an Adrenalize sound library!!!

s' OK. Half the time I don't know what I'm saying either. Dazzle with brilliance, baffle w/....

Hope you never have large amounts of metal in your body. Even with carrying a Stryker card (endorsed by Homeland Security), it still ensures a quick trip to a back room. Otherwise, full body scanners are great for speed. The puff scanners are very slow (we have two in SLC) and they slow the process down significantly.

Run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor I'm not a fan of the upgrade vs clean install, and am having significant problems with a friend's system that was upgraded vs clean OS install. I do like most of what Win7 has to offer. Some things, like dealing with going through multiple drives is a PITA, and stupid stuff like the desktop icon have been moved to dumb places. But, it is faster, it is sexier, and it is more intuitive to a degree. Hardware can be a bitch, because not all hardware (even legacy Vista hardware) has drivers found in Win7. But....it's very nice overall. And yes....backup is CRITICAL. There are several cheap/free backup apps that will do it all for you. You certainly would hate to lose all those spanking photos you've got stashed away, right? And all those juicy PM's you've archived after you've read them?

Looking for photo of result of container opening in aircraft
DSE replied to steelyeye's topic in Instructors
True enough. Fortunately, the aircraft landed with some degree of control, as opposed to gravity having it's own way. -
These are all output formats, not "quality options." As to the rest of your question, when AVID acquired Pinnacle, the didn't add the AVID intelligence to the Movie Studio products. Even though I have to review Pinnacle products from time to time, you'll never catch me with that bloat/crapware on my 'puter. They've never changed their base code, and it's STILL glitchy as hell. Not to mention counter intuitive.
