Which is what they should have done in the first place, and then an overall ban against all of them would have been unnecessary. But the problem is that the line between aggressive vs non-aggressive behaviour is subjective and this could make any legislation inneffective. It is a "catch all" so that when someone is being aggressive they do not have to go to court and prove he was aggresive. This sort of thing can work. Furthermore if the police receive complaints about a specific panhandler, they do not have to catch him in the act of being aggressive. They can just penalise him period and guys like him will get the message and behave. The Villification of Michael Vick and our own Cultural Ignorance

I would be quite surprised if the percentage was high. I have yet to speak to anyone who felt he was involved. Again, I think (or at least hope) you are underestimating the average person. While most people will have inherent biases, I strongly disagree with the idea that most refuse to see something that disagrees with their pre-conceived notions. There will always be some hardliners who only see what they want to see, and some people take a little more convincing than others but most people will be open minded if faced with a solid argument. Pitbulls are not the problem. The problem is the kind of idiot that often seems to want to own one (not an attack on those who just like the breed of dog). How many times do you see a pitbull with an owner who looks like the kind of guy you would want to meet alone in a dark alley? All to frequently its some thug or wannabee tough guy who is deliberately encouraging aggressive behaviour in the dog because having a psycho dog makes him feel like he has a bigger dick. A good owner could turn a pitbull into a great pet and a shitbird owner could turn an irish setter into a menace. Don't ban pitbulls, guns..etc; hold idiots responsible for their actions. Using an animal for assistance as a means of living is one thing. Subjecting animals to violnt death for amusement is another. Yes and we have laws to ensure that animals are slaughtered in a humane manner. Are you sure he wasnt French??? No. I just felt like pointing out that he had just made the same honest mistake that he was so offended at me making. To most people outside North America there are no distinguishing characteristics between Americans and Canadians, and I acept that. Why then am I considered ignorant if I mistake chinese vs korean, indian vs Pakistani, Australian vs New Zealander...etc. I that man is taught since birth that laws are just to incarcerate blacks and that Cat Juggling is Kosher, he wont know any better. Maybe if you show how dog fighting is truly accepted by a large portion of american culture I might beleive he acted in ignorance. The law is nuts. Child molesters get less punishment. I hope you are wrong. I suspect you are but if not, then by all means I would like to see a comparatives study showing sentences for molestation vs dog fighting. Um...what human was harmed? None. Dogs were, and that is why his treatment of humans is irrelevant in his animal cruelty case. There are vastly diverse and different cultures here in the US. To the point where large segments of the polulation are not aware of major laws? Let's not forget that by being a pro athlete he has had exposure to cultures outside his little micro culture. If he was not aware it was illegal then why was he not open with everyone about it. What about laws that make it an even bigger offence (a hate crime) if your victim was a minority? Agreed. What is his endgame? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -
The Villification of Michael Vick and our own Cultural Ignorance

When I was in the Caribbean getting away from the cold Canadian winter, there was a boatload of Japanese tourists (yes the majority were actually japanese and not just oriental) at the bar I was at. I spoke to the one Korean guy and mistook him for a Japanese person. He ripped my head off. Upon finishing his rant he followed up with this parting shot...."You Americans are so ignorant". I am not making this up. Yes and so long as they are mentally competent adults theyare fully responsible for their actions. No. He is a criminal for breaking the law. Presumption. I do not do that. Irrelevant. He is not being charged with crimes against humanity. I don't. So long as they do that in their own country. And if I was in India I would not kill a cow. There is plenty of outcry when a pitbull mauls a kid. Many have called for the banning of pitbulls. When an animal is subject to needles cruelty, the fact that it's breed has a bad reputation does not in any way mitigate the cruelty of the act. We are a civilised society and should not be needlessly cruel to dumb animals. This is not about imposing my values on another culture. If another country likes eating dogs that is their business. Here we have animal cruelty laws and I expect people to abide by them or pay the price. ??????????????????????? Was wondering when the "R" word would pop up. Oh I forgot...every black man in trouble with the law is somehow a victim of race. OJ Simpson, Mike tyson, Michael jackson.....etc. They are all poor little misunderstood victims who are being oppressed by us insecure hatefull white-boys who apparently go into a tailspin every time we see a black man driving a better car then us or dating a white woman. Only now do I see this grand conspiracy against the black man. Wow....are we evil or what? We???? Ignorance and racism are not the same thing even if they often go hand in hand. Judgementalism is not racism. I personally think the act of female genital mutilation (aka circumcision) is horrible and cruel. Am I racist for that? No It's not. It is the law. Do the crime do the time. This case is not about racism. It's about cruelty to animals. Are you on Jesse Jacksons payroll??? I suspect if you took a poll on this forum, you would find that people hear would want heavier sentences for a molester than a dog fighter. Do you honestly beleive that holding a dog fight is more offensive to the average american than molesting a child? Education is the answer. Dumb shits like Michael Vick should become educated in our laws. It is not my responsibility to ponder endlessly about why some people cannot abide by our laws. He is an adult who is responsible for his actions. If an immigrant family kills their daughter here in an "honour killing" should I let them off the hook and "educate myself" about their culture instead? No. Our laws their responsibility. With all due respect, I cannot possibly disagree with you more. I can see where the ban seems silly, but we have had problems with overly aggressive squeegee's or panhandlers. While you may not be under obligation to pay them if they go ahead and wash anyway, they seem to feel that you are. I suspect that you are the kind of guy who can handle himself so you might not face serious aggression since these guys pick their spots, but often if there is a senior citizen or a small female alone in the car the squeegee guy will hit the car with his squeegee if they do not pay, or he will bang on the window. Some of the panhandlers here were getting extremely aggressive. I am a pretty big guy yet some of them have even made me feel a bit uncomfortable with their aggressive behaviour, so I imagine for a small lady or an elder it must be worse. Since the city started cracking down there has been a noticeable effect. I suspect that the cops will not actually enforce the ban against all squeegees, so much as use it against the aggressive ones. Don't blame guns or the US, UK society is to blame.
Richards replied to Skyrad's topic in Speakers Corner
Fair enough. I am no criminologist so my following opinion is just that...an opinion. On the left we have the "root cause, intervention thereapy" approach, and on the right we have the "hang-em high, throw away the key" approach. My humble opinion is that you actually need both. Usually if a left leaning government comes in they pour money into community centresand other intervention stuff but give slap on the wrist sentences. As a result the ones that can easily be saved will be, but the harder tougher ones have no incentive to seek out help, and no disincentive to avoid criminal behaviour since the benefits of being a criminal outweigh the costs. When a righty gets in he brings in heavy sentences but does away with spending on intervention programs for at risk youth. Thus even though the bad guys are afraid of the new law there is nothing to direct youth in the right direction. This is where I think that all the intervention approaches used by the left, combined with a heavy handed justice system would be more effective. I realise there are many complications I have not considered, but just once it would be nice to see a two pronged approach by someone instead of one of the two extremes. I still beleive that criminals should fear the law considerably, but there is nothing wrong with spending on programs that help at risk youth recognise the importance of respecting the law. Thank god the SC had the cojones to do this. I only hope the cops can effectively enforce this. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/08/23/squeegee-court.html My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

I may be taking this out of context, but is ones grasp of the bigger picture a function of how far to the left they lean? Until the courts/government/police are all on the same page and working together to catch these thugs and put them away for a very long time we can expect more of the same and worse. I probably did not make myself clear. I was not saying that anti-BNP attitudes are the problem or that the BNP are good. My point was that the assumption that anyone who wishes for stronger laws is automatically running to the BNP is what hurts society. If you wish for more national pride or if you wish for law and order you are accused of being a fan of racist parties. I am sure many of the people in the UK wish for a stronger national identity and a crackdown on lawllessness, yet this does not mean that they wish for BNP or fascism. I am curious about that. There has been some acknowledgements/evidence as of late (I do not remember the source) that contrary to poular beleif, some alcoholics can go back to casual drinking and do not have to stay away completely. Is this true or were these ones not real alcoholics (for that matter where is the dividing line between drinking problem and full blown alcoholism)? First, if he is that bad, other people at the dropzone must have noticed. Be the first to publicly tear him a new crapper when he goes for your beer. If others are not already doing it they probably want to and all you need to do is be the first one. Failing that, if you bring beer, bring a cooler instead of putting it in the beer fridge. You can still be generous and share with your buddies (presuming it works both ways), but you can now guard it against him. Freeloaders need to be publicly embarrased and denied freebies. My favourite is dumb shits who invite themselves along when people go out for breakfast or lunch and then don't order anything because they are broke. Invariably some sucker feels bad and buys him something. I have learned to eat remorselessly in front of guys like that. Most of my freinds eventually learned to do the same thing with one particular turd. After awhile he got tired of drinking water while we ate in front of him and stopped showing up. Got someone who always seems to short change everyone on the bill in a restaurent? Seperate bills. You cannot let your guard down around chronic freeloaders, but if after awhile they can get nothing out of you they move on and find another sucker.
