I've got a goooood one. My first love and I had a huge falling out before he went to Iraq, and he swore he would never speak to me again. On Tuesday morning, I got a call from an unknown number. Imagine my surprise when I heard his voice on the other line. He was back for his midtour and wanted to see me. Our short time together thus far has gone well, but when hearts are broken, one day is not enough to mend the pieces. But a renewed friendship is a good place to start. To my dear Steve Orino, I'm sorry you took my comment about having to walk what seemed like a mile across a DZ with heavy gear as a complaint. Quite the contrary. It was moments such as those that made Airborne school all the more memorable. And if you think that perhaps a female can't be up to par with the "elite" leaders of today's Army, you are talking to the wrong person. I can run faster than most males(12:19 2 mile), did all my pull ups without assistance, and am now flying the Army's most technologically advanced attack helicopter, the AH-64D Apache. If the weather cooperates, I will be making my 100th jump at Dublin. I can't wait!!! I hope you will all keep an eye out for me and help me make it a jump to remember. I have fond memories of my time spent at Airborne school. I went in 2002 as a ROTC cadet, one of 25 females in a class of 400. Allow me to offer some helpful advice: 1. Be prepared for your neck to hurt...a lot. While you are learning how to PLF you will spend an enormous time on your back in a gravel pit with your Kevlar helmet on and your head not allowed to touch the ground. 2. Don't go commando the days you are in the swing harness trainers. A lucky Marine learned this lesson the hard way when the leg straps caused a pants malfunction. He had to hang helplessly in the breeze with his junk hanging out while the Sergeants Airborne threw rocks at it. 3. Round parachutes enjoy the company of other round parachutes and trees. Be prepared to dance on your buddy's canopy. Also, the DZ is huge. If you are one of the first ones out the door, Anticipate landing about a mile away from the pickup point. At least it seemed like a mile away to a 125 lb. girl hauling a giant parachute, reserve, stuffed rucksack with one broken strap, and a weapon carrying case with a plywood board in it across a giant field. 4. To everyone who attended the Pyro Vixen Boogie, I want to say THANK YOU for all your support and kindness throughout the weekend. I don't think I could have found a better group of people to spend a rainy, non-jumping Saturday with. Much love goes to my fellow Slip-N-Sliders...shower load is manifesting now! And I don't think I will ever feel more like a celebrity than I did at the AWESOME party! To everyone who helped me through what turned out to be a horrible Sunday--all my jump money stolen (not at the dropzone), lack of canopy for half the day, etc, etc.--I appreciate you more than words can say. I had people offer to pay for my jumps, help me pack, and give lots of hugs. I look forward to my next visit to Sebastian, when hopefully skies will be blue and I will retain my sanity!
