Any comments on the latest ZP.EXE mains?
dragon2 replied to FreeflyIndian's topic in Gear and Rigging
We have a few as student mains, I jumped a 220 once and I liked it overall, sort of like an original sabre. Not sure if i'd buy one as a more experienced jumper though, unless it's cheap and you're not looking for much performance. Might make a good wingsuit main ciel bleu, Saskia -
which reserve is better for high wing loadings?
dragon2 replied to SuperGirl's topic in Gear and Rigging
The only reserves I'll jump at higher that 1:1-1.1 are PD-R, PD Optimum, Parachutes de France Techno or previous series (Transfair, Mayday), Aerodyne Smart. I had some bad (well I lived lol) experiences jumping other reserves and a lot of older models are not made to handle wingloads over 1:1. If you do want to jump a small reserve, get a good one ciel bleu, Saskia -
How much are you paying for your reserve repacks?
dragon2 replied to BillyVance's topic in Gear and Rigging
EUR 75 (~USD 109), good repacks. Then again, they better be for that price ciel bleu, Saskia -
And that is a very big problem right there. If you don't know how to handle the speed your canopy is capable of, you will run into problems when (note, not if) you get cut off on final, land out and have to dodge an obstacle, try to land into the wind too late, something like that happens and you'll react the only way you know how, and you'll run a very good chance of hitting the ground at high speed. If you learn the total performance envelope of your canopy you'll be much better able to avoid getting into a situation like that and should you anyway you'll be much better able to get out of it in one piece. Plenty of people get hurt every year, a lot of which fall into the "conservative flyer, never swooped" category. ciel bleu, Saskia

Camera suits: wing types and booties revisited.
dragon2 replied to DougH's topic in Photography and Video
I like freefly pants the most, tried booties and tight pants but I like having the drag when i need it (have even done some tandem jumps with birdman pantz, worked great but they are floaty so need to be lightweight tandems). ciel bleu, Saskia -
I just came back from a mostly very sunny skiing trip, I made the best photos with the camera set at +0.7 stop. Some others had theirs set to +1.0 stop. If you shoot in RAW you have the best chance at fixing shots like these because you can control the lighting afterwards. ciel bleu, Saskia

found a cam - opinions on other stuff please
dragon2 replied to chuckakers's topic in Photography and Video
??? Really? I never have a problem with that. I can either use the tube with the helmet off, or just push the shutter button. Maybe it is how you have it wired? Might be, I have my plug wired so it's continually metering and focussing, so the "button is depressed halfway" all the time. Oh well, I can live with it, I just don't shoot a photo of the tandem pair in front of the airplane, no time usually anyway, and I put on my helmet early to take a few shots in the plane. No big deal, but might be a suprise at first.... ciel bleu, Saskia -

I went through a few bite and tongueswitches before settling on a blowswitch, it's more bulky but way less fail prone, one disadvantage for me is that I cannot take photos without either putting on my helmet or unplugging the remote. But the blowswitch has lasted me the longest so far so I'm happy. ciel bleu, Saskia -
Two out is pretty rare compared to just your reserve. Also, I've HAD 2 out and a Skymaster 230 didn't play nice with a PD253R anyway, so I do not expect my vengeance or even my safire to play nice with any kind/size of reserve. Get a reserve you can land well in any condition. Regardless of the main you fly. Period. ciel bleu, Saskia

Sounds ok-ish, provided it all fits you right, you're ok with the colors and the helmet is (very) nice. A new tracksuit is 395 euro at the moment, so it's not that big a difference, but it can save you some money if you're tight. I'd pay less... ciel bleu, Saskia

Yes, they fly and land "worse" so you want a BIGGER reserve ciel bleu, Saskia

Try to contact someone from the DZ in Voss, Norway. They have a lot of experience there with mountain swooping and can tell you what to do and what NOT to do. ciel bleu, Saskia

I just had mine custom made, not sure what your local options are though. ciel bleu, Saskia

LOL Well these ARE the same group of people who do the round demo jumps at Arnhem etc, pretty cool that someone keeps up these traditions

The 20D body is bigger, more solidly constructed, heavier and more weatherproof, al in all a very pleasant camera to use on the ground, especially when mounting heavier lenses and/or when you can use a bit of weatherproofing. You can feel it's a more pro-type body than the digi rebels, personally I really like that, but for the other specs it doesn't matter much, so if you need a lightweight camera for just jumping (or maybe backpacking or something) I'd go with a digi rebel too. But I shoot so much ground stuff, I'd want a 5D too ciel bleu, Saskia

He did, a fair bit, had to ice his shoulder after that ciel bleu, Saskia

I meant the way they were filmed ciel bleu, Saskia

If it's just for jumping, lightweight is probably best. However for anything else, I'd want more camera, and I'd jump it too if that was all I had. ciel bleu, Saskia

Top, duh Although there are some people here jumping the CX6/7 and HC5 as sidemounts, i think those are riser hits (or worse) waiting to happen If you want a sidemount get a 2nd hand nice small pc series camera, everything else, up top. ciel bleu, Saskia

Rounds like you've never seen them before, at least I haven't... 'watch that step' 'watch your altitude' 'watch that static-line' ciel bleu, Saskia

No, as a safire 1 is ~8% (one size) smaller than a safire 2 ciel bleu, Saskia

We still have a century optics .3 for sale http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=58390;d=1 ciel bleu, Saskia

Not sure if this depends on your country or not, but we only get tested when we (as a team or single performer) represent our country for worldcup competitions, world championships, eurocup competitions, european championships. This can be in or out of competition, out of competition you have a bit more leeway (ie, smoking pot out of competition isn't as big of a problem as during one) ciel bleu, Saskia

A couple thoughts: - the katana at light wingloadings seems to take forEVER to open, with some associated problems, at least the ones I've seen. I know people who got scared because of that (people with 2000+ jumps each) and won't jump a katana 150 again. - our national rules say no katana (of any size) before 700 jumps, there's a reason for that - if you want to learn to swoop, a sabre2 is a good choice, it has a decent recovery arc but none of the hp opening issues If i were you, I'd buy a sabre 2 of the same size or one size smaller and learn how to swoop on that. After that, maybe a katana, but maybe you'd like a smaller sabre2 or something like a vision before jumping a katana, after that time you can load it up some more and it'll open and fly like it was designed to do. Going from a safire to a katana now, you'd be skipping one or two classes of canopies, sounds like a bad idea to me, esp at your jumpnumber. ciel bleu, Saskia
