Never tried skydiving--want to do it on vacation

Hi everybody, I am going to New Zealand next week, and while I am there, I would like to do tandem skydiving. All my friends have done it and they say it is amazing. I am so terrified though. Is tandem skydiving really safe? Is it safe in New Zealand?
