GET THEM! I jumped a student manta loaded at about 0.8 or 0.9 pounds per square foot. Ended up with massive line twists and one arm tangled round the left riser. That was swinging me around pretty hard so I am sure your Triathalon is capable of doing the same thing to you. Anyway point is I couldnt cutaway because of the line twists (note: even WITH steel riser inserts). Anyway dont under estimate how hard it is to cutaway when your canopy isnt deployed as it should be. J

how long were you jumping before your first reserve ride?
JayCam replied to jtval's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well I TRIED to get a reserve ride yesterday on jump number nine but main canopy was so twisted it would cutaway. See "first really bad experience" thread lol... I think I must have the record for "attempted cutaway in fewest jumps". Does massive line twists count as a mal? J -
lol for those interested heres a stupid MS Paint diagram of what happened... I later realised it didnt open through my legs but on either side of them which might actually be worse. so body goes through risers but sticking out left arm doesnt... lol the stupid look on my stickman doppelgangers face cracks me up... J

Thanks

Yeah that was meant to become a topic about WHY it didnt work but it ended up being the same thing... I posted to end the other thread... J

End this thread... to continue go to "first really bad experience" under the General skydiving section... J

ok I am in a rush and have to take off now. I have only read the first 5 posts and didnt see anyone ask this question, so I will. As perhaps a final statement of what happened lol... The pad came off no problem (its only velcro) and the cables came out about 4 inches but no further. J JAY CAM, did you try to PEEL and pull or were you just yaning on the handle? Sorry if this was discussed already I will read the rest of the post later.

lol farcical... pretty funny though lol J

I guess it just depends on how you were taught. I would have tried again to get stable if I was at a higher altitude but I didnt think I had time from 4200 feet. J
-
I cant imagine I would have been able to put 600lbs of force on them no. J
-
Sorry bad choice of words. The handle DID come loose and the cutaway cables came out about 4 inches but would come no further. I DEFINATELY was pulling the pad I saw the yellow cables come out and I was trying to pull it for about 20 seconds and then again later on. It wasnt a case of getting the handle off the velcro or pulling the wrong thing. To all the gear questions I am sorry I dont know I am but a newbie who isnt even qualified to pack yet. It isnt my rig it belongs to my drop zone so I cant take it apart and take pictures. They will be inspecting it Im sure so I will have to ask next time I am there. J

AHH! I just realised! Yes these canpies DO have hard riser inserts. I just assumed there was no other kind thats why I didnt know what they were. Look like metal shower hoses kind of like articulated stainless steel tubes? If thats it then yes it had them. J
-
Yeah I pulled it off the velcro but it wouldnt come any further. I pulled it out about 4 inches which was REALLY difficult but then it really wouldnt come any further than this. I tried a bunch of times. I actually pulled so hard I heard the canvas that the pad is attached to rip a little so it wasnt an issue of not pulling hard enough. J

Left arm. I am left handed though J
-
Thanks for your support. My head was spinning too much to think to try pulling it once down. A couple of guys who helped me back said it was stuck though at least when they picked up the rig. After lots of thinking I think that the cutaway lines (dont know if this is the right name) were twisted together at some point. J
-
Yeah you would really have to firgure out how much upwards force the wind exerts on the board. It till be less than your weight otherwise you wouldnt be falling? make sense. Newtons third law I think, or second. Once of them lol. I know I am right up to here from my a level physics but I dont know how you would calculate how much force this was. Someone with a qualification in fluid mechanics please take over lol. J
-
Yeah but someone in admin edited the thred and got rid of that ass that was on before. Anyway guys... Later! J
-
They said it was very unusual and have kept the rig aside to test it. I will find out next time I am there what went on. J

I pulled unstable on my back today and got into a massive mess of line twists. Tried to cut away but the handle wouldnt come loose no matter how hard i tried (and i tried hard). Can anyone suggest why this would happen? Had to try to untangle my main which wasnt pretty and had a pretty close call. I kind of backflipped through the risers and one got wrapped round my arm. It seems crazy that the chutes cannot take this kind of thing. I was pretty angry that I couldnt cutaway. Anyway any suggestions as to why would be good. J
-
Oh i see. I understand what you mean. I am not sure to be honest. Ill ask next time im there. J
-
Sorry dave I dont know what hard riser inserts are. Please tell me I might know as I have watched these kits being packed alot. J
-
Thanks, nice to hear that im not infact being an imbicile. lol I hope we know the other comment isnt to be taken literally! J
-
Yeah. My instructor says that I probably did the right thing to pull early in the situation I was in. However I now appreciate that once u have the main chopped you only have one more chance. If im in a situtation again you bet im going to do everything I can to get the main working before i cut away. Another thing. If the main had suddenyl cut away at like 200 feet I would have been screwed so i havnt really figured out if that was the right thing to do. I guess I had no way of knowing that the cut away wasnt going to work. I have seen people cut away on this model of rig before so I dont think its a manufacturing problem. BUT if it jammed as a result of me twisting it with my newbie bad technique then shouldnt they make rigs which still work even if u twist them a crazy amount? Who knows, I am still going through this in my head. Havnt quite got rid of the weird shock feeling. J

See above post. Yeah Ill definately find out if it worked but i had to go and get my arm sorted out and get out of my skydiving gear. Was pretty shaken by it please AGAIN i DO NOT want to sound like im some irrisponsible idiot.Maybe a bit late but cut me some slack im still shitting myself lol J
