  4. LOL - don't get me started on flavoured beers!! And to the OP, ideally you want a really good real ale with that fish and chips - but good luck finding one in Arizona! A darker beer would be better than a lighter one, something not too fizzy. Never try to eat more than you can lift

  6. Well different strokes - and show jumping leaves me absolutely cold. (to be honest i'm not a massive soccer fan either but its more interesting than show jumping!) Looks nice - but i haven't heard anything about how they ride. Playing on the boardman name - for those who don't know he won an olympic track gold a few years ago i think. Remember you need pedals on top of that - there are a couple of online stores that are really good, wiggle is the one that springs to mind. Personally i like the shimano ultegra pedals but it depends on your budget. Good luck with it, would be really interested to hear your thoughts once you have ridden it. You want some cycling porn? check this out http://www.bmc-racing.com/time_machine+M5d637b1e38d.html Just don't look at the price.... I am guessing that the amount you want to spend is roughly in the region of that trek? In that sort of price range i would have a look round and go for an alloy frame, with a carbon fork (and carbon rear stays/triangle if possible). I personally like the lemond stuff - and the condor frames are lovely. if you in london i can recommend a couple of good bike shops. But it depends what fits you - all the major manufacturers do nice gear around this price. Go for Shimano 105 or above for the groupset if you can. The next best thing you can do is upgrade your wheels. I just rode a set of fulcrum race 1's on my bike. Wow - what a difference from the stock wheels, i will be ordering a set. Rotating weight is one of the most important places to have light gear. Dont skimp on your attachment points - saddle, pedals, cleats, bar. And if at all possible, find someone who really knows their stuff to fit it for you. PM me if you want any specific questions answered!!! Hope this helps Never try to eat more than you can lift

Re. the bike - unless you are doing maxed out time trials i would personally stick with a normal road frame. Also with the tri bars you would be unwelcome at some races if there are group rides involved. As for the speed? i do a regular 100k ride on a sunday in a group. the first half is usually between 32kmh and 35kmh, and then the fast boys at the front start stretching it out. (in the last few k they are doing about 50-60kmh on the flat - at least i believe they are because i have dropped off the back by then! ) 32-35 is a nice comfortable pace in a group, and i would think a pretty good pace as a solo, especially with any conditions to deal with. 23. I get your point - but cyclists are allowed to filter (at least they are here), and trust me, i would rather use cycle lanes than ride on the road if at all possible. Unfortunately pavements are more dangerous than roads in a lot of cases because pedestrians are less predictable and want us there even less than the car drivers want us in the roads, and where there are cycle lanes, they are quite often the bits of road that you try to avoid due to potholes, broken glass etc. having said that, in most places i go this mentality by planners is slowly changing. But then you get a car parked in the bike lane Never try to eat more than you can lift
  24. Wow there are some anti bike people on this thread. Course bikes don't pay fuel tax, why should they. I would be happy to pay the proportion of road tax that corresponds to the wear and tear my bike puts on the road in comparison to a car/ van/ HGV. I will happily pay a tax for the amount of emissions it is giving out (at least on a day i haven't had beans.) And in a busy city centre, cars impede bicycles, so you can look at this more than one way. I drive and pay road tax as well, but thinking bicycles should pay it or stick to the pavements is absurd. If people can't negotiate their way around a cyclist or two safely they shouldn't be behind the wheel. On this point however: I agree almost totally, apart from the fact that large pickups and other heavy vehicles have much longer stopping distances than smaller cars, however tehse days unfortunately they have similar speeds and acceleration available to them.
