Another reason why it's great to be hyper-aware under canopy!
NWFlyer replied to NWFlyer's topic in The Bonfire
Rock on - way to help out a guy in need! Go Kurt Vert and the whole crew at Skydive Sac! http://cbs13.com/breakingnews/aircraft.down.lincoln.2.1843110.html Story + video (on the right). Student gear will be included as part of your student program's cost - usually the price to rent the gear is baked right into the cost of the jump. Sit tight, work on your student jumps and then talk to your instructors about buying gear after you have some jumps under your belt. There's an older canopy called the "PD 230" but as I think you're aware PD makes (or made - the original Sabre is out of production) a bunch of other canopies that are appropriate for newer jumpers - including Sabre, Sabre2, Spectre, and Silhouette (these four have all been around for a while and will likely be more available on the used market) as well as the Pulse and Storm (newer canopies, less of a used market for these, though they will pop up from time to time). And as others have said, finding a container that will take a 230 does require patience - but they're out there. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. If you're looking that way (e.g., must be THIS main, must be a complete rig, etc....) yes, it's "that rare." But if you're willing to be a bit more flexible, you should be able to put something together easily. Couple options: 1) open up your options to include canopies other than the PD 230. There are plenty of 230 size canopies that are appropriate for a newer jumper. 2) consider picking up individual pieces of a rig separately. Often that's an easier way to put together a rig than finding everything together. 3) use the "wanted" feature of the classifieds here ... often that's a way to find things that aren't listed but might be sitting in a gear store or closet somewhere. 4) call some dealers to see what they have and see if they can help you track something down. Ooh ... just remembered The Last Seduction. Haven't watched it in a long time but it fits the "erotic thriller" genre... "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

Skydive Arizona will fly theirs from time to time, usually at their big boogies.

Sept 30 - Oct 3 — Skydiving Chicks Rock 2010!
NWFlyer replied to LisaH's topic in Events & Places to Jump
It's far from an all-girl boogie, though the percentage of women is usually higher than a typical boogie, it also attracts plenty of men who come out to celebrate the fact that Chicks do indeed, Rock. (And because there's always a bunch of guys who think "Awesome, my odds will be better at this boogie .... the odds end up not that different than normal ) "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Funny, that's the one I had put at the top of my queue right before starting this thread. So I think I'll go ahead and get it next since you say so.

Cutaway Landing Procedure?
NWFlyer replied to gofastrlbrown's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't find that annoying at all. It's their decision and their gear. It's also entirely my decision whether I decide to help out or not if I do see where the gear goes. If someone gives me shit for not chasing my gear (or worse yet for not chasing their gear), fuck 'em. I'm happy to be out there marching around trying to help a friend find their gear after a cutaway and appreciate the folks who have helped me find my stuff... but I'm not necessarily going to land out to get it. Los Angles International (aka LAX)... most likely. Depends where you're coming from? Ontario (ONT) is a much easier airport to go to for elsinore. Way closer, easier drive, simpler to navigate. LAX is an option but if you can find a comparable fare to ONT, it'll be much easier. Lots of people fly in there so it might be easier to share a ride, too. San Diego is also an option though might be a longer drive. -
Eat enough of it and your dead body will be preserved for centuries.
-
It's a preservative, but it's also used (along with lots of other ingredients) to make people want to eat more of a product. Read the Kessler book I referenced above ... it's pretty amazing stuff that's being done to manipulate our appetites. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. LOL okay ... I just see so many people eating the processed egg crap that comes out of a carton ... eggs are awesome in their natural forms! As for salad dressing, I mostly use plain ol' oil and vinegar, or there's a couple I like from Trader Joe's that need to be refrigerated so the preservatives are low. Sodium is in almost all processed foods. And High Fructose Corn Syrup sneaks into a lot of foods too even ones that aren't "sweet." It's insidious... Stay away from the processed crap. Loaded with stuff you don't need, especially sodium. I have a hot lunch almost every day but it's almost never out of a box ... I just make extra of whatever I'm cooking for dinner and put some in a plastic container for work the next day or two. Or I'll cook up a crock pot full of soup or chili and freeze it in small containers. Read "In Defense of Food" or "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan or "The End of Overeating" by David Kessler. All of them are pretty eye-opening about the food industry and the stuff you're eating if you eat mostly packaged foods. What the hell is a low-fat egg anyway? Whatever happened to cracking the shell of a regular egg? Eggs should not be poured out of a carton. And yogurt should have two ingredients, not twenty. Buy lowfat plain yogurt and add honey and/or fruit to it. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Then you may also want to look at Bay Area Skydiving (bayareaskydiving.com) and Skydance Skydiving (www.skydanceskydiving.com) , both of which are closer, or contact the user bodypilot1 on this site, who teaches at The Parachute Center in Lodi (a bit farther out). Any recommendations you're likely to get are going to be from people who will tell you "my DZ is the bestest!" Why not read the reviews (http://www.dropzone.com/dropzone/North_America/United_States/California/index.html ) on here, as well as calling up the DZs and talking to them about their student programs. Pick a couple that you get a better "vibe" from and go visit them ... see which one feels right. All of the DZs in the area have their own character ... you may find one fits you better. Earplugs? Personal preference or a real reason?
NWFlyer replied to 3mpire's topic in Safety and Training
I see more of them taking their earplugs OUT a just before exit. Lots of people wear them on the ride up to help protect their ears from the loud airplane noise. Some still wear them in freefall, many don't. Personally, I take them out before exit because I want to make sure that when I get under canopy I can hear as much as possible. I've had the most success with massage therapy, especially with those who are focused on deep tissue massage/sports therapy. I tried acupuncture for shoulder pain and it actually felt worse. Haven't tried chiro, but I think for muscular pain massage is worth a try. I've worked with a massage therapist for a few weeks now after an ugly opening and it's done wonders to unlock my back/neck/shoulders.
