  1. Eh? For all practial purposes, god is indistinguishable from it's own non-existence. So from a pragmatic point of view, all religions are equally useless. Useless? I don't know it seems religions are not useless... From a hopeful point of view, religion might be the crutch an individual needs to persevere during an otherwise hopeless time. From a cynical point of view - religion one hell of a way to fund-raise.
  2. Is grad school an option for you? If it is, you can basically choose where you want to be and you can buy yourself some time to really find a place. By the time you finish your masters or whatever you do maybe the economy will be better. Also, as you are in grad school you can get contacts by working with companies through the school's career services.
  3. Well for one the slope of the hypotenuse of the green triangle is not the same as the slope of the hypotenuse of the red triangle, so the two large triangles are not identical. So the big "triangle" in the top picture is not really a triangle at all, since its "hypotenuse" is not a straight line. My excuse for the lack of terminology is that English is my second language...

  5. What is it that the president finds out when he gets in office? Does he get indoctrinated into the skull and bones society and promised a lifetime of wealth for each of his family members for obedience? Or does he find out that the nation is actually controlled by a mega-gang who, figuratively speaking, "hold a gun to his head" while he is in office? Something causes the souls of presidents to disappear as soon as they enter office. (That is, of course assuming that the president in question had a soul to begin with.) Bill Hicks had a great bit about this - he joked that once you get elected, they take you into a secret room where the heads of the large corporations show you a video of the Kennedy assasination from an angle no one's ever seen before, and after the video is over they simply ask 'any questions?'
  6. My last vehicle I bought in 1995. A brand new Ford Ranger (2WD), hasn’t been taken in for any failures yet.
  7. Noyes and Loomis eh? I was more of an Everitt and Altgeld kinda person. Transportation Building, represent!!!!!!!!
  8. maybe he's preparing for the sequel to Thriller - where he now plays a zombie....
  9. someone in my office said they saw somewhere that he died.
  10. Problem is, now everyone expects us to do the same against Brazil! I'm just not sure that without Bradley they can really do it...but then, no one expected the Spain game either!!
  11. I think I'm still somewhat OK with Algebra... i was tossing around the idea of going back to school for my master's in engineering - the thought of relearning all that math after about 8 years of not doing any math is what's keeping me from exploring it further....
  12. Not just America. If I recall correctly, Karl Marx used such a slur to describe a candidate for office in Paris , who had some (I think it was about a quarter) african ancestry. Not even that long ago either - fairly recently soccer teams in Spain were getting into trouble when their fans would make monkey or ape noises at opposing black players.
  13. Ah, it is not a problem with me. I have never advocated the firing of anybody. Free markets forces will take care of it IMO. I wasn't implying you had a problem with it - more just asking whether it's the fact he made this joke about an underage girl (even if that was not the intent) that is the problem, or the fact it was Palin's daugther that was the target of the joke that is getting people up in arms.
  14. People like Letterman (and Leno, probably Conan and anyone else doing this type of show as well) have been making fun of and implying the slutty nature of young people like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and more recently underage girls like Miley Cyrus for years... and no one appeared to care then. So is it only a problem now that the joke may have referred to the daughter of a high-ranking member of one of the two major political parties?
  15. You've stretched yourself really thin in this thread. It's not murder to kill a fetus. Oh, wait. Yeah, it is. Well, people in hospitals being kept alive by machines sometimes have the machines turned off so abortion should be legal. A woman isn't sad about a period. Therefore losing a fetus isn't sad. Therefore abortion should be legal. There are so many stretches and hyperbole in this thread it's rediculous. Bin Laden is a life therefore I can't be against abortion. I'm not pro-life I'm just anti-abortion. Blah blah. Quick question that came up without doing any research on this or reading all of the pages of the thread (so I don't know if this has been covered): If you think abortion is murder, then if a woman purposely disregards doctor's orders or purposely does things to induce an abortion or to to just hurt the fetus out of spite (drinking heavily, punching herself in the midsection, etc), should that then be considered battery? Should THAT be illegal? And if so, how do you enforce?
  16. Hey! Last time I hauled out that joke, you busted my balls. The way this season is going, the Cubs can't hit anything so letting them shoot shouldn't be a problem...
  17. Marg, If these tests aren't really high-yield, could it just be that they're testing the process of creating the explosion with a small amount of plutonium - so they're not seeing how big a blast they can get but instead just that they have the process of causing the blast down? Or do nukes not work in this scalable way?
  18. I understand why people are saying Star Trek & Terminator suck. Neither movie offered any real insight or thought provoking dialog. Just cool CGI effects and action sequences. I liked both movies for what they are, not what they should have been. Star Trek Nemesis (the last Star Trek film) was in fact a very good movie that didn’t do well at the box office because it lacked mainstream appeal. Truly great films rarely achieve broad spectrum acceptance. Most moviegoers need their entertainment to be spoon fed to them. Easily digestible plots, simple dialog & PG-13 action. Nothing too harsh or complicated. Every movie must have a beginning, middle & happy ending. If you dare to change this formula, you risk alienating the retard audience. Anybody remember “Independence Day” w/ Will Smith? What a fucking stupid film that was, yet so successful, it resurrected Will Smith’s career! Movie studios exist to make good money, not good art. Fall/Wintertime, during awards season, generally produce more cerebral movies. Think “There will be blood” or “No country for old men” If you want to blame anyone for these types of movies, look in the mirror. You are the ones buying the tickets. RETARDS! What about the Dark Knight? One of the highest grossing films of all time, yet in my opinion a truly great film. As far as Terminator goes - it was an action movie that had the Terminator characters. It wasn't T1 or T2, but orders of magnitude better than T3 (as others have said). My favorite parts of the movie had nothing to do with the plot or the action sequences. I liked that the director tried to really give the fans of the previous films little homages like [POSSIBLE SPOILER] in the final fight sequence against the T-800, there were a lot of shots that were almost exact remakes of the fight between Kyle Reese and the T-800 in the first movie or the Arnie terminator and the T-1000 in the second movie. Also, the use of GNR to lure the motorcycle was a neat touch too. Still, it didn't really add to the mythos any, which is disappointing since there's so much there and since the TV show (which really adheres to your theory of the 'mainstream entertainment has to be dumb' - it was a smart show that just couldn't get the ratings to stay on) was so good in expanding this story and this universe. I'd like to see it again to see if I can pick out anything else. Overall it was a fun action movie but not one that really added anything.

  20. "He drives a Ferrari" doesn't mean squat unless you know the model and year. Models that were produced in larger numbers, and are fairly old, can be had for very reasonable prices, even with low mileage. e.g. the Ferrari 308: http://motors.shop.ebay.com/items/Cars-Trucks__ferrari-308_W0QQLHQ5fBINZ1QQ_catrefZ1QQ_dmptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucksQQ_sacatZ6001QQ_trksidZp4506Q2ec0Q2em301 I got roped into watching this with my fiancee, and unless memory fails, he was actually driving a Lamborghini Diablo.
  21. That was my thought as well -- but the logic in favor of this says that this is no different than cops tracking a car visually. As far as I know it's not illegal to 'lose' a tail (provided you do it by driving legally). Something else I just thought of .... the cop that tries to figure out what the hell happened when another cop tags a rental car
  22. Another question I have is: Let's say you're not a suspect for anything but your car is tagged with one of these devices. You find this device and remove it and then throw it away. Would this be an actionable offense or would you have to 'let' them follow you until they decide to take the thing off?
  23. Congrats! I hope that a growth in engineering-type jobs means more patents begin to be filed, so more patent lawyer jobs become available... ..i'm starting to look anywhere in the country, and haven't had much luck yet...
  24. That. "Proud to be an American" doesn't make much sense for anyone born here. I'm HAPPY to be an American, but I didn't have anything to do with making that be the case, so why would I be proud of it? A legal immigrant is the only person I can understand taking pride in his citizenry, because he made it happen. The rest of us just got lucky. Blues, Dave As one of the aforemententioned 'legal immigrant' types that went through with getting my citizenship, I am proud to live here. I feel my allegiance to the USA much more so than the state of Illinois.
