I nominate this for post of the year. On a more constructive note though, I think it sometimes is hard to get through to people about agressive downsizing if their dream is to be a big time swooper since a lot of the big swoopers also agressively downsized. For example, Francisco Neri went from a Stiletto 135 to a Velocity 90. Also on the PD website, he has this advice "ADVICE TO UP AND COMERS: Don't care what people say, follow your own ways." Not to single him out though, he's just one example I could find easily. Also Jay Moledski was on a Jedei 120 at just over 100 jumps according to his bio.

First impressions of the Spectre 135 - Interesting Openings
jheadley replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Gear and Rigging
You can put a 150 into an OJK, I've done it before. If you put an ad in classifieds, saying you have a 135 and you just want to trade for a 150, you'd probably get several replies. -
Small, low wing, low stabilizer aircraft with a door that opens sideways. It'd be very difficult if not impossible, maybe illegal. Only certain aircraft are approved for flight with the door open or off IIRC.

I'm reading the patent on the 3 ring release and found this section in it "It should be further noted that while circular rings are used in the embodiment described here in detail, other geometric shapes or rectangles of flat bars of different circumference could be used" If anyone's interested in reading it, it's patent # 4337913

What Should I Know About a Cross Country?
jheadley replied to JENNR8R's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ummmm... Where would I put the beer? I can't believe you set yourself up like that. -
Quotethe bag is definitely tight as fk so it could be getting away from MY PACKER since I''m too lazy to pack the tight lil biatch myself. Not to sound paranoid, but I think my packer is trying to kill me. Maybe I should tip him better... Quote Here we go again. I think before anyone constantly critisizes packers for every little problem, they should spend some time in their shoes (or bare feet lol) and see how much abuse they take.

Can you or someone who knows how to duplicate this mal post a pic of it? -
What Should I Know About a Cross Country?
jheadley replied to JENNR8R's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
What about RSLs? The last time I did a cross country, everyone was yelling at me in the plane because I had my RSL hooked up, something about "how if you have a cutaway you'll fuck up everyone else..." I don't think they really understood why either, probably just something they always heard. We were not doing CRW either. -

Please post a pic. Good job. -
One time I took a #2 in the toilet and then when I looked in the bowl, there was nothing there.

You hear a lot of people say that a Spectre has a steep glide ratio (I don't know if they've ever actually jumped them, though), but PD's flight characteristics sheet says a Spectre actually has a slightly flatter glide than a Sabre 2. I put 5 jumps on a Spectre 150 and found the glide angle to be very similar to my Sabre 2 150. In my experience, a "flat" flying Stiletto 150 can be harness turned more easily than a Spectre 150, so I think the ability to harness turn it has more to do with the square footage and the wing taper, rather than the glide ratio.

When you stall, let your toggles back up slowly and evenly, that's the key. It's harder to do that you think since when your canopy collapses your first instinctive reaction is to let the toggles back up immediately. This is a good example of how NOT to recover from a stall. http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=3454&string=stall

I've been known to Tubgirl a few people who had their printers connected to a community network.

Give it time. You've only been jumping for a couple years. Something that I think is neat about the "culture" of skydiving is that instead of being the mark of a loser (think homeless), it's actually considered cool to live in a tent on a dz. For a little while anyway. After a few months it's time to move up to being trailer trash. Haha, so true. Towards the end, I envied those fancy trailer people so much, with their flush toilets and microwave ovens! . Hey, when it rained, at least I had a miniature swimming pool in my tent! They don't have that!
-
I lived in one for 3 months at Z hills during the winter and then 3 months in Pennsylvania during the summer. It was ok until Pennsylvania had the week long period of rain and severe flooding. Also thunderstorms aren't much fun either if you live in a tent. If I had to do it again, I'd make sure I had a tent that was much much more sturdy and waterproof than the wal-mart ones.

You can see in the video that the right side riser releases slightly before the left. Strange. I see in your profile you have a Javelin. I have heard that the left cutaway cable (RSL side) on a Javelin is 1/4 inch longer than the right, to make sure both risers release before the RSL activates, although it looks like you didn't have an RSL on this one. Is this correct? Did your packer say he did anything different? It looks like as you pull you go into a slight left turn. Are you sure it wasn't body position?
-
Those are PD's words not mine. But by pulling down on the front risers you may go faster but you are going down faster not accross the ground faster. Don't front risers increase your foward speed a little too? I know it makes your glide ratio more steep, and you'll be going down faster, but I thought it also did make foward speed faster. When you are doing CRW and are above and behind the canopy you want to pin, you dive at them with front risers, making you go "down" and "foward", right? I've only done a few CRW jumps but that is how a CRW dog explained it to me.

Have you ever been asked if you were gay (and are you)?
jheadley replied to kelel01's topic in The Bonfire
A skydiver asked me if I was gay when I said I was not interested in hooking up with random women. -
USPA rule for currency is 30 days for students. You have to jump at least once every 30 days to stay current. How uncurrent you are and what kind of recurrency you do is dropzone dependant. For example if you haven't jumped in 40 days, the dropzone may make you repeat your last jump. If you hadn't jumped in 60 days, the dropzone may make you go back a level, etc.
-
The Stiletto was made in 93 and it's still a nice canopy. Just because it's an older design doesn't mean it's bad. IMHO with maybe 40 jumps on a Sabres and ~300 on Sabre 2's I think that the Sabre 2 is a definite improvement, but I don't think it's as huge of a change as people say. The only thing I'd say that's totally different about it is the opening.
-
That's an offer you shouldn't pass up! NCNS so far, guess he wasn't too interested after all. Mick. Gimme some time.
-
Saber 2's are definitely "better", softer openings, better glide, quicker turns for instance, but if you're on a budget there's nothing wrong with a Sabre. If you have one that opens hard, then get a pocket slider and problem solved.

Derek, I know this is accepted wisdom and i do it, but i always wonder, has this actually happened? Would the force put on the ring not break any "set" that might have occurred pretty quickly? SOmeone recently told me this was an urban myth and i'm curious. Just wondering..... In this post by Bill Booth, he explains that webbing stiffness is no longer a problem on modern mini 3 rings. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1654031;#1654031 He does say in another post that keeping your 3 rings clean and lubricated is still very important. Edit : This is a better post about it http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1652688;#1652688
