You don't want that. Generally, that would be for student rigs or some other special purpose. Harder to pack and more likely to cause pilot chute hesitations, etc. Dave

The Navy, probably... Dave

How many photos did you shoot in 2008?
pilotdave replied to PhreeZone's topic in Photography and Video
FYI, you could save a lot of time by using a program like Picasa3 (which is free, from google). You can assign keywords to each picture instead of moving them to different folders on your computer. Use people's names as keywords and you can filter and sort as you wish. You can also add keywords for anything else, which will make finding pictures a lot easier. It can even filter and sort pictures by faces and colors that appear in them... like you can search for purple and it will find pictures with purple in them. Those are maybe a little "experimental" but the software is free so it's worth giving it a try. http://picasa.google.com/ On a nice summer weekend, I'll shoot 1000+ pictures. Isn't digital great? -
Is that an excuse? Poor acting is poor acting. But it was also the writing. There were just so many stupid lines. It was like watching a rehearsal for the real movie or something... before they finished writing it. How many freaking times did the head ninja repeat "can't I just hang out with my little cousin?" Always sounded like they were reading their lines throughout the whole movie. I just can't imagine what anybody loved about it or why anybody is talking about awards. It was like they wrote a movie just to let clint eastwood groan repeatedly and talk in his low voice. He must have had such a sore throat after every scene. Dave

Really? I thought the story was ok, but the acting was awful. Clint Eastwood was fine, but his character was so over the top. Most of the movie was predictable. And none of the intimidating people were intimidating at all. Overall, I pretty much hated it. Dave

Flock-U's website must be getting inundated with hits... SkydivingMovies.com has been getting a bunch of hits from Flock-U's page. Never noticed any referrals from there before. Also getting a lot of hits from searches for various wingsuit-related phrases. Unfortunately most of them are "wingsuit mishap" or "wingsuit deaths" but some are for "wingsuit flocking university."

Well, sort of. Probably not much use in freefall, but an altimeter is just a barometer. It doesn't work if you don't either know the atmospheric air pressure or the ground elevation where you're starting though. It also needs the static air pressure where you want to read the altitude... which would make it tricky to use in freefall. Dave

Why can't I pull my front risers?
pilotdave replied to GPSJane's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Interesting... the hurricane is very popular around here. Much much more popular than the sabre2 for example. Never seen any issues like that. Very scary. Dave -
I used to ski until I found out that skydiving is a winter sport. And I'm not talking about florida. Pic attached is from last Saturday. Good thing snow is soft! Dave

I always felt the same way until I bought a big widescreen tv. Widescreen movies just look tiny on a little 4:3 TV, so I always preferred 4:3 movies. But once the TV is big enough, widescreen finally looks good. Still get black bars on the top and bottom since movie theater dimensions are wider than widescreen TVs. Dave

Probably not a great angle, but how's this? Dave

How many photos did you shoot in 2008?
pilotdave replied to PhreeZone's topic in Photography and Video
I just create new folders for each date I'm transferring pics from the camera... usually one per week. I use picasa to go through them and I star the ones I want to upload to my website. I can upload to my site straight from picasa after I do whatever tweaking I want. Then everything I upload gets captions and keywords. I use my website for searching through pictures most of the time. Even if I didn't upload the picture I want, I can usually use my website to get at least to the right date and then I can find the picture I want in picasa. I was backing up all my pics on my website for a while (unlimited storage) but I haven't done that in a while. I don't worry too too much about backups since most of my best shots are already on my site. Dave -
New Years Day Jump N. of Mason-Dixon

Yup. Chilly and breezy in CT, but we had fun. I also made 2 jumps but only from 4k. I like winter jumping, but not THAT much. -
When can I start learning to fly with a camera?
pilotdave replied to Petrovich's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The SIM has a nice section on camera flying and the photgraphy forum has a FAQ. They explain a lot of the complications. But basically cameras cause distraction. They also tend to get people to fly "to get the shot." You get tired of crappy video quickly, so you try to hold steady and not look around and not get your hands (and altimeter) in the shot. I wouldn't want to be in the air with a newbie flying like that. You could stick a brick on your helmet and make it snag resistant. But that would be entirely different from jumping a camera, even if the camera had no snag points. Dave -

I don't know the exact number, but I posted 3780 skydiving related photos to my website in 2008. I typically post about 10% of what I take, so I'm guessing over 30,000. That's definitely not all freefall shots though... mostly landings and other stuff taken at dropzones. Hmmm... how many shots is the XTi shutter rated for?? Dave -

Reducing snag points is one way to make camera flying safer. But entanglements are not the only danger. Dave -

We can see Jumptown (or at least the Quabbin Reservoir) to the north and Long Island to the south on a clear day. I've exited close enough to Bradley to land there if I wanted.

That was my first time wearing a camera helmet since November 9th! Actually that was just about my first skydiving related picture of 2009. You should be honored!
-
Yeah but look at the faded colors and the graininess! It has to be old! Just kidding. It's Howard White... earlier today. Cold and terrified!
-
Found this one in the archives. I don't think Howard White should be allowed to answer. He was probably there when it was taken! Dave

pilotdave replied to Petrovich's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'd go with USPA's recommendations at a minimum (200 jumps). Wearing a camera won't really help you learn. It would probably slow you down actually. Video is a great tool to improve your skills, but mostly when it's pointed at you. Ask someone to video you in freefall and also landing. It really does help. But from your own view, it's hard to see what you're doing wrong. Dave -
I don't have my logbook handy, but it looks like I did about 350 this year. And only 157 of those were at my home DZ. Hopefully I'll be home more in 2009! Dave
