Why do I have to make "FUN" jumps?
OnYourBack replied to OnYourBack's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Luckily my DZO doesn't expect me to fun jump. I think he feels sorry for me sometimes and throws me a free slot when its open. I'm like you, I truly enjoy the work. I'm also one of those people that likes to focus on one thing until I'm a bad ass at it. -
Why do I have to make "FUN" jumps?
OnYourBack replied to OnYourBack's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I do think its fun and I do enjoy jumping with friends. I was just curious what peoples thoughts were on the subject because when it comes up people refer to it like I have a disease. "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DON'T "FUN" JUMP!" And other than Judy's belief that it may lead to safety issues when I do "FUN" jump, there haven't really been any comments to make me understand the disdain in some peoples tone when the subject comes up. -
"Pulling someone's leg," meaning to spoof someone with a lighthearted gag, is a good example of a colloquial idiom, a popular saying which means more than just the words it contains. If I say that my friend is "a loose cannon," for instance, I am saying that he is unpredictable, not that he is an artillery piece. In the case of "loose cannon," it's fairly easy to pinpoint the literal source of the metaphor: an untethered cannon rolling around on a ship's deck is unpredictable and possibly disastrous. But in the case of "pulling your leg," we have a genuine mystery. Not that there is any lack of theories, of course. Perhaps the most commonly heard is that the phrase refers to pulling on the legs of someone being hanged in order to speed up the process. The phrase, however, dates from about 1888, long after the technology of hanging had rendered such grisly embellishments unnecessary. A more likely source is the practice of street thieves tripping their victims as a prelude to robbing them. To "pull someone's leg" thus meant to trick, disorient and confuse a person, a meaning which lives on today in our more benign "just kidding" sense. http://www.word-detective.com/100699.html

Why do I have to make "FUN" jumps?
OnYourBack replied to OnYourBack's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Because I do make solo jumps on occasion and stability is never an issue. I really think this is not an issue. Do you understand that the drogue has nothing to do with stability. It should not be used until stability is achieved. -

"if all you do is Tandems, how do you know you can get stable by yoursefl without the drogue out." As I stated yesterday, a TI that uses the drogue to be stable is an exception. I know I can do it because I can fly a kicking and screaming newbie strapped to me stable before I throw the drogue. The drogue is not there for stability and if you use it for stability you are wrong! Can you point to any other TI besides the one you told your story about, that needed a drogue to be stable? I don't think, and I'm sure there are many other TI's who will agree that this is a problem that is common. -

Sure its nice to have a low pressure, sunset dive. Sucks to pay for it though . I do enjoy "fun" jumps, but I hate when people act like its a bad thing that is hurting me, if I don't do them. -

Rob, perhaps everyone is jealous because we had fun and got paid and made more jumps than they did. -

Okay, I've always gotten crap at my home DZ and now I've seen it on here. Why does it bother people if someone doesn't make "FUN" jumps? Why does it even matter to anyone else? -

I will be the last to tell you that I exit perfectly on every jump. I didn't mean to make it sound that way at all. -
EXIT TO THROWING THE DROGUE OUT INSTABILITY PROBLEMS
OnYourBack replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
"the instructor being arched and the student being opposite" This alone will not cause a side spin. If this position occurs AND your side is presented to the relative wind. If you present properly to the relative wind the above mentioned position will not spin you. -
EXIT TO THROWING THE DROGUE OUT INSTABILITY PROBLEMS
OnYourBack replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
"the ones who wrap the students up to get stable spend the most time UNSTABLE" I totally agree. Just fly your slot. If you exit properly, very rarely does it matter what they are doing underneath you. If they do flip you over, your time is better spent to continue flying yourself. Once you dearch to "wrap" them, you usually really begin to tumble. You can increase your control even more by wearing an appropriate jumpsuit. -
Do you think Tom Berrenger and Stephen Baldwin still jump?

Didn't you see the end of the movie. Tom B. cutaway and burned in, it was so sad. -

A tale of two different drop zones
OnYourBack replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sorry to hijack the thread. 1. If a TI needs the drogue to be stable he shouldn't be skydiving. I would bet he is an exception to the majority. 2. As a TI I feel I give a lot to the DZ. The labor I exert for the DZ and the passion for skydiving I share with my students derives them a lot more profit than the 15-20 bucks a sport jump does. 3. I'm a lot more current in my awareness and level of safety and ability to land safe in more conditions when I'm on every other load than I ever was a "sport jumper" making a few jumps a day. 4. Tandem jumps and work are "fun" to me. -

Its never pleasant when someone jumps in your face (especially when you had done the right thing). I'm curious though about when you say: "this dick always leaves the DZ once the tandems are processed and is never seen making fun jumps" Is that a bad thing? -

What does it mean to win the "War on Terror"?
OnYourBack replied to narcimund's topic in Speakers Corner
Regardless of what either side of the debate says they are going to do, I can only think of one way to stop all wars and acts of terror from happening. Human Extinction. But I'ld rather not see that happen. -
Risk Tolerance - What is stupid? (motorcycles)
OnYourBack replied to PhillyKev's topic in Speakers Corner
Judging a persons intelligence based on their risk tolerance is the ignorant thing. I love the whole argument about how it much it costs to take care of people who are "stupid." Lurch hit the nail on the head talking about obesity. Far more people die or cost the country money because they are overweight than skydiving, riding motorcycles without helmets or not wearing seat belts. If you want to save lives and save the country money with legislation (which in my opinion is wrong), then you should pass a law that requires exercise and a healthy diet. -
As I understand from the news yesterday, the networks get to opt out of one night of coverage. It will be shown for one hour each remaining night.

Forced abortion so to execute female inmate!
OnYourBack replied to AggieDave's topic in Speakers Corner
>Did you look at the CIA factbook? http://www.cia.gov/...blications/factbook/ (No guarantee that it contains the stuff you want). That is a pretty cool resource but it didn't mention much about crime rate. I was just wondering if having that severe of a criminal justice system did anything to the crime rate. It did say men only outnumber women 1.06 to 1 though. That sorta surprises me with the reported trend of aborting females.
