I agree with you. A formal statement from a passed pope (say 18th century) repudiating the passed practices of the Inquisition would have helped. But it's long gone now, let's move on. Although I do believe it is a minority of priests that have commiting atrocities, it is far more widespread than most people would think. My parents, who both went to Catholic boarding schools, recall trying to never be alone outside of their rooms at night by fear of being cornered by a priest or a nun... However, I have a MAJOR issue with the reaction of the Catholic powers that be (regional, national, and the Vatican) to the abuses. It swept it under the carpet for decades (if not century), and the fact that those who commited these acts and those who protected them mostly got away with it is, I believe, a scandal. Regardless of the religious believes (it applies, IMO, to any person on this earth), they should have been turned over to the proper authorities. John Paul II's stance on the matter was, I believe, weak at best, immoral in my (very own) understanding of morality.
