hello peaceful jeffery,
as i said earlier, it was my first jump at a new jumpsite(for me) and my 22 jump, so it was agreed that i would pay for a jumpmaster to attend and he saved my butt from having to open my reserve. we jumped together and i followed his hand comands for an otherwise placid jump. at 5000 i waived off and pulled, 5 seconds later, with the jump master still holding on to my side, i started wondering why i hadnt opened yet, looked over my shoulder i saw the pilot chute suspended about 6 feet over my back. I made the decision to cut away and as my hand went for the handle, the main opened, i stopped, the jump master kept going. i watched him until he opened, looked up at my chute, said some thanks to all involved, and the rest went fine. when i landed, he was waiting for me and explained that the bridle was routed wrong and sinched the flaps closed, he manually opened my main by pulling the pin himself.
unfortunatly, my story has no value in teaching someone how to solve this situation yourself, other than to have more than one person do a pin check, or only get pin checks from qualified instructors, or follow through with your emergency procedures. 1 more second and i would have reached the cut away handle.
peace friends
