Is it? I've found at least 5 threads about this. But there are still two different opinions (and a lot of speeches). I've found a quoted letter from Icarus telling that Safire1 built by Precision is smaller. But I've also found somebody from Icarus telling that canopy size was not measured differently, and Safire1 139 is a 139 and not a 129 (planform factors were not taken into account). However, if it is, it explains why my old Safire1-139 performed a little better than brand new Pilot 132...

That is a wise decision! At least, you can always increase your w/l by wearing weights. Can't find an easy way to decrease w/l though...
-
Assuming we are talking about intermediate ZP canopies (Sabre2, Safire2, Pilot etc). Are you interested in ... well, kind of swooping? If not, then get a 190. If you are, rent a 190 for some jumps until you can perform all the maneouvers from billvon's list. And then get a 170
-
Switching from 230 to 150 is definitely bad idea. I'd recommend to jump a 190 and 170 for a while. If your W/L under a 150 is 1.2, then under a 170 it will be ~1.0. Good point to start from! Buy your rig and borrow a 170 from somebody for hundred jumps.

Glad you're still alive! Hope your instructor is as confident in your abilities, as you are.

Help choosing my second canopy
DancingFlame replied to vibeke's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yes, there are. Safire Why don't give a try to 119? 109 seems a little bit small... Aerodyne Pilot. I demoed one (W/L was ~1.35) and it was definitely better than Spectre. -
[my odd opinion starts here] Just fly your canopy. Do not think about accuracy, landing areas etc. Trust yourself and open your eyes. Feel the confidence: you can and you WILL land just fine. It's really easy. It's all mental. I had no problems with accuracy even on my first jump with square parachute (don't think my 22 jumps with rounds helped be a lot). I felt my parachute, knew its reaction on control inputs and was just getting tons of fun flying my wing. I suggest you to do the same: just enjoy it! [my odd opinion ends here]

Visit Russia. We have something about 0 C (32F) right now and in two weeks here will be -15 C (~0F). However, our planes and helicopters have really good heating systems It's a big pleasure to get into a warm comfortable Mi-8! -30 C (-25F) on the earth, -60 C (-78F) on altitude , +20C (68F) onboard
-
I suggest to demo a Safire. Icarus will build it in any size you want.
-
Tried both, liked Pilot more than Sabre2. Openings are considerably better and on-heading.
-
I'm pretty sure if he is a good canopy pilot and he loads Velocity 1:1.2, he will be just fine. However at this W/L there won't be any advantages in velocity against other canopies.

Reline a Falcon? AFAIK, Falcon is made of F-111 and airfoil wears before the lines do... I think, you should better get rid of the canopy.

Pilot and safire 2, a Comparison
DancingFlame replied to nicolesser's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
That's the trick a lot of people do not understand. Somebody does not take full flare of the Safire and then he says it has weak flare. But those who got used to it say Safire is better, or, at least, nor worse than Pilot. So do I. -
Yes, there is! With 1.3 you'll get all the winds into your eyes. Prepare for tears... Stay at 1.1, and get coaching. Someday you'll understand what a wise decision it is.
-
Oh, come on, don't start it again. Safire's flare isn't weak. I would event say it better than Sabre's. I have Safire 1 (built by Precision) and it has an awesome flare! W/L is somewhere between 1.28 (jumping almost naked ) and 1.4 (a lot of weight for jumping with anvil-type people). Never tried to load it more. Never wanted it though I've jumped 3 Safires (all built by Precision), they all had strong flare.
-
Just visit Russia... Aerograd Kolomna. And you will be able to do as much helicopter jumps as you can pay for (jump ticket is $13 for a 4.000 meters).
-
Second that. If surface is smooth enough, slide. If it is not, PLF.

Safires 2, is a good options today ?
DancingFlame replied to nicolesser's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Again, can't say for Safire2, but Safire1 have about the same riser pressure as Pilot. I like them both, but since I already own Safire, I didn't find any reasons to trade it for Pilot. -
Can't say for the Safire2, but Safire1 opens definitely better than Sabre2. Always on-heading, soft and predictable. From what I heard about Safires, Safire1 made by Precision is better canopy for swooping than Safire2. Did not have time to check it myself.

Sponsorship And What I Want To Do
DancingFlame replied to Jumpmunki's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah, it has better to be 'Jumper X had a full-of-events skydive because of his rig was manufactured by YYY and his main was packed by ZZZ' ! -
The New Strong "Flinger" (or something..) System.....
DancingFlame replied to Unstable's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's not just a rumor. It has happened. Can't ask directly from team members as they are in Brasilia now. Rigs were sent to Mirage and then returned with kind of 'that was bad packing' answer. I believe Justin knows facts better, why don't ask him? Containers were new shiney Mirage G4, do not remember sizes, but I believe they were flying Stiletto 107 - 120. I'll dig more info later. -
What about accuracy? I found it to be very tricky to do a 270 approach (at 300 jumps at least) and land in a right place. Yes, I know the good altitude for a 270 on my Safire, but every time I'm doing it I'm missing the swoop lane (if there is a swoop pond, I'm missing it too ). So I found it better to learn accuracy first. Now I'm doing my straight or 90 approaches NOT missing the right place. Don't you want to try this too?

The New Strong "Flinger" (or something..) System.....
DancingFlame replied to Unstable's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's not a rumour. Russian 4-way Evolutio Pro Team at Malevsky Cup had that kind of, ahemm... 'mal' The whole team gone low, understand this and after short tracking whole team pulled their mains. While mains were snivelling, all 4 Cypresses fired. But reserves did not opened and they did not have two-out situation. Rigs were Mirage G4, packed by 2 or 3 different ceritfied riggers. I believe there were some another problem with the rigs. -
Seems like it is true. We had 2 Vigil fires last Saturday at Aerograd (low cutaways, both jumpers pulled themselves but Vigil still worked while reserve opening was in progress).
