I'm buying my first used rig in parts. So far I've got a Vector container (that's Vector, not II, or III), a Raven 160 reserve, and a Cypres. I'm looking for a main now. The person who used to jump this rig had a PD 170 in it, although I'm not sure if it was a 7 or 9 cell, She sold it apart from the rest of the gear, so I couldn't buy the whole thing. Now I've got a lead on a Silhouette 170. Everything I've read suggests this would be a good first canopy. And while it's smaller than the Spectre 190 I've been renting, I'd still be loading it at a conservative .85:1. Even though it's the same size as the former canopy with this rig, I'm afraid the difference in design as well as the partial ZP construction might make it just a bit too big to fit. So is there a way to find out? Or is it just a matter of getting the gear together and seeing if I can stuff it in? Thanks. I used to be just about the same distance from my folks, and it was just about perfect. We were close enough that we could visit often, sometimes on short notice. But it was also far enough away that I had an excuse when I didn't feel like visiting. And, far enough that we didn't drop in on each other without notice, and maybe arrive at an awkward time. Now I'm probably about 3,000 miles from Dad-Michigan to Arizona. We only get to see each other once or twice a year. I don't know what your geographic relation to the DZ is, so this might not be relevant. I have a 3+ hour drive to Eloy, and generally stay in a hotel just down the road. (Sometimes I just pitch a tent and camp right there.) Between the long car trip, sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, and excitement/anxiety of jumping, I don't sleep as restfully as usual. (Add to all that, sometimes I'm driving down after working a night shift.) That's enough to make a little soreness and tiredness seem worse. If you run (or some other active, high impact sport), you should check out their athletic clothes. They have a line, Pro-Spirit, which rivals the fancy schmancy running store clothes. They're made of CoolMax, just like the expensive stuff. They come in lots of different designs, in fun bright colors, just like the expensive stuff. The only complaint I've heard from runners is that the bras don't offer enought support for large-breasted women. But that's not me. At about 10-15 dollars per item, I can splurge and get a couple of new outfits every season, and spend only about 1/3rd what I'd pay in the running store! I've seen several nailgun injuries come to the OR. And I've made a few interesting observations. First, if you nail your thigh while you're kneeling or squatting, you'll fix your knee in the flexed position. Second, nailing your scrotum will probably cost you a testicle. Third, if you nail your sternum (breastbone), don't remove the nail. (Being a good construction worker, he knew when you put a nail where you don't want it, you just grab a hammer and pull it out. However, he didn't realize that the nail was plugging the hole it made in his heart.) I feel better wearing goggles because they help hold my prescription glasses on my head. The glasses I have now are pretty secure, but I suspect I could lose them in freefall if the air caught them just right. Without them, I could probably land OK, but then I couldn't legally drive off the DZ.
