Message for George Churchill - who needs clamps anyway?
jamostar replied to 980's topic in BASE Jumping
I first learned without clamps, and later experimented with using them. I didn't prefer clamps until I started doing the same style pack job as Kmonster. BTW, Kmonster and Dexter, do you do the same pack-job on jumps< 250 feet? Sig lines are so stupid. -
i find this thread insightful and helpful. It's nice to know this forum is still worth reading as opposed to all the other crap on dz.com Sig lines are so stupid.

make friends with people at your dz, if one of those friends turns out to be a veteran base-jumper then it will be easy to talk about base. Don't just try to make friends with people cause you hope they will be a mentor. Sig lines are so stupid.

icon's simply don't have the time-tested rep to start. the tolerances for construction variation are relatively high on both rigs. i.e. lack of symetry on closing flaps both main and reserve. also incosistent tention on riser covers. As far as the atom legend goes I've witnessed three "table totals" on the reserve, not packed by me, but by two OTHER riggers. edited to add: they are not "shitty" but if you're gonna spend big dollars on an item especially a lif-saving item don't you want first rate? If I spend 1000 plus buck on something I at least want insanely low tolerances on symetry. I'm sure both companies would fix any incosistentcies in your product, but they shouldn't have to fix something after you drop big dollars. One table-total is enough for me to not want it on my back. Go look at some Icons. Does the tuck tab on the main flap sit fluch into its slot, or is there a gap? If there is a gap, is it an even gap on both sides sitting horizontal or slightly a skew? Not a real performance issue, but why have issues at all? Sig lines are so stupid.

do you really want the latest not-so-time-tested first generation design to be your life-saving device? edited to add: no one will admit to spending over a thousand bucks on not "the best" rig. The moment you decide to buy one, even if it's a dolphin or racer it becomes the best peice of skydiving technology out there. Aerodyne is like "toyota" nothin wrong with them, will last a long time, and be reliable. But you can only get "so-much" performance out of a toyota before you need a true high-end design. I personally don't want life saving devices to not be high-end. Sig lines are so stupid.

every time you use it, the spring-based locking mechanism will get a little weaker. Sig lines are so stupid.

there are a lot of second rate containers out there that are cheaper than first rate containers. the quasar 2 is second rate. It probably wouldn't kill you, but why go second rate? Sig lines are so stupid.
-
the reason icons are cheap is because they are cheap. They won't kill you or anything, but the construction and design is based on research done by non-jumpers of other far superior rigs. Sig lines are so stupid.

oxygens are shitty. get a not-so-shitty full-face with a quality closing system. Sig lines are so stupid.

most skydiving helmets are not engineered with as much safety in mind as a pro-tec of any kind. Most skydiving helmets are basically audible/camera holders rather than protection. And also skydiving helmets look cooler than a pro-tec. p.s. I'm sooooooooooooo drunk Sig lines are so stupid.

The best thing you can do to prepare for base is to focus on skydiving. Don't try to focus on certain parts of skydiving just to prepare for base. All of skydiving is valuable. That being said, don't just taste a little bit of lots of different parts of skydiving, but get really good a one part in particular. While still keeping an open mind to all other aspects. Paradoxically, the best thing to do is not worry about base, just be a really good, well-rounded skydiver. Sig lines are so stupid.

I'm trying to find a base video called track or die. It wasn't on skydivingmovies.com It was some really good euro footage of some jedi trackers taking it to the basement. Sig lines are so stupid.

There is a whole lot of really difficult shit to do in skydiving try cranking out 15+ points on a 4-way or something relatively easy like 6 different transitions with a skyball. Better yet how about 15+ vertical points in a 4-way. Skydiving well, is really hard. If it's a rush you're after try being stupid lots of different ways. Smoke some crack. BASE is another skill like skydiving. Try getting really good at skydiving. If your looking for a challenge ask other skydivers for some ideas. You are probably a total natural, but I'm sure you can't grab a skyball 6 different times with 5 transitions in one jump, try it. Sig lines are so stupid.

I have observed several of the leading fjc's and in my opinion johnny utah's is the most complete and comprehensive. Sig lines are so stupid.

Warning: Highly Opinionated Post Getting into skydiving in order to do something else i.e. BASE, is an inherently flawed mindset. Skydive to experience skydiving. If you are "waiting" for some arbitrary jump number, skill sets, or experience level to make it o.k. to BASE then you haven't been 100% focused on learning the skill you're practicing. Becoming a very good skydiver who is well-rounded with lots and lots and lots and lots of jumps doesn't mean you should start BASE. If you are starting to think about base jumping around 50-60 jumps like so many other people then you are unfocused. If you can't completely immerse yourself in what your learning at the time, stay away from fixed objects. When people ask me the question "how many jumps do I need to BASE" I say when ever you feel ready+200+ an experience under canopy where you thought I better do something right now and it better be right or I'm definitely going to die. A good friend of mine asked if he could borrow my base rig to learn to BASE at the perrine. The person he was going with had less than 30 Base jumps off of 2 objects. Fucking Retard. Sure lots of people are saying "hey I started base when I only had X jumps and I'm alive" I sight Chris Rock " you can steer a car with your feet if you want to. . .that don't make it a good fucking idea!" My friend said "it was an opportunity, I couldn't pass up" Perhaps the worst mindset to get into base jumping. I'm not saying you're gonna go step off an object with only 300 skydives, but the general tone of this thread seemed to be encouraging a lack of discipline and "the fast track". To start saying what is the minimum level of preparedness or skill or whatever is the polar opposite of how good jumpers (sky or object) think. Move toward over-training, above and beyond the minimal. When you feel like you're way, way passed ready then you probably are ready. If you are completely immersed in skydiving then you will know when it's time and when you are ready. If you are not completely immersed in skydiving i.e. thinking what should I do to be ready for base, than you will never be ready. edit for spelling Sig lines are so stupid.
