The size (weight) of the canopy should be a consideration with PC size. I think it mentions something like that in the document Robert referred you to. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com

John (Kenya), Good Point. There are definitely those times when its necessary to really work for distance with a head wind in order to make it to a landing area. Having the ability to reach full flight is a good thing. Reducing drag from your body helps too. Full flight (or more) can also be very desirable at flare time. In a no-wind or down-wind situation, I prefer as dynamic a flare as I can get. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com

My choice for Kjerag WS flights. 11 ft bridle 36 vented Sometimes I'll use a 32 ZP vented PC; but I have noticed it takes a little bit longer to open. James Boole or Robert, what would you recommend? Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com

NC/SC Jumpers - Bruce Kramer Wants to Jump This Weekend
JohnnyUtah replied to base428's topic in Archive
I called John Hayes and asked him to pass Bruces number and situation to jumpers in the Charlotte area. Just trying to help a brother out. Sorry you had an issue with that Mike. Sounds like you got a call from John though. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com -

Are you saying that you don't feel responsible, in any way, for people who you teach to BASE jump? I guess I just don't operate that way. No, thats not what Im saying at all. Not even close. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com

Cool, Im glad its there, but I was more interested in replying to your post where you talk about feeling responsible and teaching and mentoring and stuff. I noticed in the past you have made several post like that. Now be honest, did you try talking him out of it? Were you the most experienced jumper on the load? If so, do you think that matters at all? I was also wondering where you exited from. Were you close to the pillar or on the pillar? How is the jumper? Did he recover OK? Since you went downtown on this incident, can you please tell us how badly it burnt the bridge during that time of year? In reply to your post about feeling responsible and back to my original question, how responsible did you feel with that accident? Have Fun, Don't Die! I heard about a pre-BD accident that happened just this last fall at the pineycone bridge (approx 230 feet). I didnt hear much discussion in the way of what went wrong and how to prevent a repeat. My guess is, that was one of those accidents where there is a ton of lessons to be learned. Tom A., you were telling me something about it and I am curious how you felt about the whole thing. From what I vaguely remember, you were doing a PCA for someone at the pineycone bridge. I remember he was a beginner to BASE (what jump number was it……..was it his first or second BASE jump?). He had a bad off-heading and ended up hitting the pillar and breaking both legs with compound fractures. So did he stall into the pillar or hit it hard with horizontal movement (or both)? What do you consider that arrangement……were you mentoring him? Was he looking to you for any guidance? No doubt you must of felt pretty bad. Considering what you wrote in your post, how responsible did you feel with that accident? Like I said, my guess is, that was one of those accidents where there is a ton of lessons to be learned. My opinion about that site has always been, newbies shouldnt be jumping it and I have told people that for years. Ive talked people out of jumping it while they were getting their rig out of the car. It looks easy enough and when things go as planned, it is. BUT - When things go wrong there, it can get real gnarly real quick. Just a little heads up for all you newer enthusiast. Youre a funny guy Tom A. This thread was completely degenerated from the first post where Tree calls Miles a giant dick. And of course you joined in the flame festivities. Tom Aiello, I actually think you owe Miles a debt of gratitude. From the way I heard the story, one of your recent students had just returned to TF about six weeks ago from moabville with a whopping 10 jumps and thought he would try a rollover with a head wind from the IBP bridge. Well as it turned out, he climbed over but couldnt control his parachute and it ended up blowing under the bridge. The nose was catching air so he struggled to pull it in and thought it must be caught on something. So he cut it away and then climbed back over the rail. So now his chute has blown onto the steel under the bridge and is caught there. Miles was hiking up and witnessed the whole thing. So Miles goes and tracks down this student of yours at the visitors center and finds him on the phone with the sheriff. I guess he tried to call you but you didnt answer so he called the sheriff to ask permission to go on the steel to get the canopy. Well of course the sheriff said no and then proceeded to call IDOT (Idaho Department of Transportation)—the same guys who want to shut down this bridge to jumping. So Miles tells your student to call the sheriff back and tell him the canopy blew off. Your student does that and the sheriff starts asking him if the bridge was damaged and then chews out your student because IDOT had been called and they were about to bring out a big crane to park in the middle of the bridge so a crew of guys could risk there lives to retrieve the canopy at an expense that was way more than the canopy is worth. Then Miles went and got the canopy for your student. Regardless of other activities that you dont agree with, I personally am damn glad that Miles was there so that we didnt end up having a crane parked in the middle of the bridge, stopping traffic while some IDOT guys risked their lives to get a BASE jumpers canopy down. Thats the kind of thing that can shut this bridge down. Since he was your student and based on what you said to John H., then I guess that would have been your fault too. Have Fun, Don't Die! See, there you go again. We dont. Its just that you were bringing it up to diss miles. How would you feel if someone brought up the death of a loved one of yours for the purpose of dissing you? By the way, its spelt winkelkotter not winklekotter. Happens all the time...no worries dude. edit to remove attachment, see explanation below ~TA Have Fun, Don't Die! Yes! Thanks a bunch for sharing those with us Nigel. This is cool stuff to read. Please let us know when you get the other two scanned. Cheers.

You know Jason, Mr. BASE570, you can really say some stupid things sometimes. Very insensitive on your part. You basically dredge that up so you could add your torch to the flame fest. Do you even know Miles or are you just a feeble minded poser casting flames at someone you dont even know for something you dont even know about? Where do you get off thinking that? The article mentions Dan Osman being famous (which he was) not Miles. Miles does have some fame in the world of skydiving, swooping, and BASE, but that is because of his own accomplishments. I would put it a little different than Nick. VERY LAME bringing up Dan-Os last jump to disparage Miles. edit to add: I went and got a new B last weekend...how about you. Go jump with Leroy. Lonnie is a very good BASE jumper. I heard the news of his accident when I arrived in TF for my BASE Camp. Get well brother. Attached is a picture taken after the last round of the 2001 World Cup in Malaysia. (Myself on the left, Lonnie on the right) Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com

From what Colin told me a while back, Lonnie Bissonnette was to take over the managing of Paratech Rigging. I think he had done that and had begun to get the ball rolling again. Unfortunately, Lonnie had an accident this summer and is still recovering from injuries. Hopefully, Lonnie will recover well. My guess is that Paratech is in a holding pattern. I hope it makes a return. Paratech makes a good container. By the way, for those that were asking about release toggles, Paratech use to make some very good ones. I have them on several of my rigs. It would be nice to see the Paratech release toggles produced again in the future. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com

Exactly. I remember when I was on your team. Knowing the reasons I didnt like the logo, you mocked and scorned at myself and Jesus Christ for my faith in Him. Now you say youre a Christian. So whats up with superimposing the devil horns then?

The comic called Satanica (catchy tittle) by Glen Danzig. Samhains lyrics are like Danzigs lyrics. Like it if you want. Are Satan worshipers honest people? I dont know, you tell me. edit: Personal Attack removed. ~TA

Well, its not like I just came out and called Avery like Tree did to Miles. Tree continued to post on that same thread….hmmm. Tom A, no disrespect to you, but I am being harassed, and I have a few things to say about it to BASEzone readers. Nevertheless, I will keep my response as polite as possible. Since Avery Badenhop is going around superimposing little devil horns on a picture of me, and using that picture as his avatar on this public forum, then I guess I have some thoughts about it. Who wouldnt? How about a recap: Mr Badenhop, after five years you are still harassing me because I wanted to distance myself from the Danzig logo. Currently you have as your avatar, a picture of me doing a Reagan jump with devil horns drawn on it. What kind of adult uses a crayon to draws horns on someone and then puts it on the internet? Thats why I said it reminded me of that movie fatal attraction. As much as it is flattering that you have spent so much of your thoughts and feelings on me for the last five years, its creepy. Some BASE community history - What is it all about: 5 years ago I left ill vision because of the logo being used by the team. The logo is the Danzig logo. When I joined the team I didnt know that. When I found that out I did some research about Danzig. In my research I found out that Danzig is a very satanic rock band and his message to the world is basically: Satan is god, Christ is evil, murder and rape is cool, and Satan worship. People can like this kind of thing if they want. I dont judge anyone, to each his own. But for me, I want no part of it. Here is an example of what Im talking about; A sample of Danzigs lyrics: [Quote] From Danzigs ALBUM: II LUCIFUGE Serpents of the lord Crawling To the will of god Serpents of your lord Crawling All evil Serpent Jesus Snake of Christ [Quote] From Danzigs ALBUM: 6:66 SATAN’S CHILD Who can you go to when your life is on the block Who do you pray to when your darkest hours come Turn it up Turn it loose Turn out the dead Burn it up Burn it loose On the road of Cain Godless Satan's child God don't love no Satan's child Godless Satan's child God don't love no Satan's child Godless (You see the sign up ahead) Satan's child (All you who enter lose all hope) God don't love no (Check my I.D., see who I am) Satan's child (Six and six and six is my name) Said yea I took it standing Broke commandments And he tumbled like a toy Blood Like a crimson highway Spreading out From his forehead to the ground Twist of Cain Yea drives my brain Yea twist of Cain Make me come alive 'Cause it does Many of Danzigs lyrics are about Satan worship, and murdering and raping people, but I think they are too gruesome to quote. If you want to read them for yourself, do a search for Danzig lyrics on the internet. If someone wants to be into this kind of stuff, then my feeling is to each his/her own, as long as they respect that I dont want to be a part of it. Avery got all salty because I wouldnt jump with that logo anymore and therefore left his team. He has been trying to get at me ever since. Instead of just giving me common respect as another human being and letting me go my own way in peace, he continues to hold a bitter grudge even five years later. Avery, I understand that you obviously have an obsession with the Danzig logo and devil horns. Whatever. That is your business. I just cant be bothered with your Satan stuff anymore, sorry. Im over it. Can you please leave me alone? ~Johnny Utah

Karen, I come in piece. Here is why I think everyone is so adamant that the black bands on the tailgate is a bad idea. It seems to me that the indisputable problem is that if a very slight human error does occur (such as putting a wrap behind the larkshead or 1 too many wraps), then the black bands are unforgiving (in the sense that they wont break as quickly in the case of a hang-up). Im sure you are very careful about how you wrap the black band and chances are you will never have a problem with using them on your tailgate. But wouldnt you rather have everyone else out there in BASE land using a more forgiving rubber band in case they wrap the band in error? I think we have learned as a community that hang-ups do happen and its much better to have a beige band for such occurrences because they break much easier. The band breaking (in time) could be the reason someone walks away. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:johnny@johnnyutah.com
