I think the boycott is moronic. I generally don't buy Campbell's because most of their soup is cheap (as in low quality) and tastes funny. I agree. I didn't mean to imply that we should treat a patch of dirt along the New Mexico border like Lady Liberty. But I do think the points of entry El Paso, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Laredo, Douglas, Nogales, Tijuana, Mexicali, San Luis, and all the others, should have more manpower, better equipment, and better support. Like I said, I don't expect an XRay and cavity serach on every truck and trucker, but if you've ever gone through a port of entry, you know it's a dog and pony show. It's there for appearances. Almost nobody. The issue is, how do you actually fix it? A "Great Wall" isn't the answer. The nice things is that we are not Ancient China and we don't have any Mongol hordes raiding, pillaging, and burning our cities (despite what some would say). Technology has come a long way in the last two or three thousand years. I think there are several ways to secure the border AT the border. Issues of why folks choose to cross illegally we already pretty much agree on and can be discussed later (going after employers, addressing drug laws/drug war). First, CBP already knows how to patrol the great empty open spaces between heavy crossing areas. What they need are more officers, more trucks, and more tools. I'm glad that the feds have sent unmanned drones to assist in detection and deterrence of illegal crossing. I would also suggest more impressive tech at the high volume port of entry. Have you been to the Statue of Liberty or any other high value target recently? They have better security than airports. I'm not asking for an XRay and full cavity search of every truck and trucker crossing, but more than the dog and pony show that goes on now would be nice. Deportation works fine. It takes a person from location A inside the US and moves them to location B which is outside the US. Deportation performs as advertised. What it doesn't do is keep them out. I don't know anyone who thinks moving an illegal back to where they crossed from the first time is going to keep them from doing it again.
