11th Annual OKA CUP Report Great weekend of jumping and partying. When the 28 CRWdogs from 7 different states arrived at the Lodi DZ, they were greeted with finger numbing cold weather. However by mid-day Friday, it was shorts and Oka Cup tee shirts. One load landed out. Even though Chico attended, there were No cutaways. The low cost skydives ($8 to 8K) and the 2, 3, 4 way jump format kept the dogs on the manifest. There were lots of low time dogs as well as veterans practicing and trying new things. Old timers like Spotty Bowles and Russ Pinney came out and remembered what it was like to fondle nylon. With the great weather and lots of jumping, the partying got a later start than normal. However, it was made up for by visits from Gentleman Jack, Bud and their friend Johnny. At the dinner party, we had meat to eat by the raging bonfire. Nobody went to bed sober thanks to Sharon and Terrina’s epicurean Jell-o shots. With Bart Stonesteet’s skill in the kitchen, breakfast had freshly laid scrambled eggs with meat and gooey cheese. The 2-way Cup went to Northwest Passage; Mike Mckenzie, Pat Rhodes, Scott Torborg The 4-way Cup went to Too Wrapped Up; Eric Gallan, Spotty Bowles, Will Kitto, Sean Jones, Chico, Jack Eberhardt Special thanks to Craig and Mara Stapleton for their hospitality. This past weekend, the 10th annual Oka Cup at the Parachute Center, Lodi, CA. Weather was mostly cloudy but the ceiling was high enough not to hamper the 8000 foot exit altitude. 20 CRWdogs and their families attended, enjoying skydives, dinner parties and new this year, the Oka Cup tee shirts. Oh, did I mention great parties? Friday: There was the usual catching up with old dogs and meeting new CRWdogs. The Easter Bunny paid a visit giving out Ken Oka pull-up cords. To the delight of everybody, Yuliya, artist extraordinaire, made a surprise appearance. Bart Stonestreet could not jump due to a back injury but came out anyway. “Dinking with CRWdogs is better than drinking alone.” Unless you pass out and the Artist uses your face as a canvas. Can you say, Pagliacci or how about Asian hooker? Chico showed up. Then déjà vu, Chico showed up again?? It turns out that it was his look-a-like brother, Joe. The Dogs formed into 2-way and 3 & 4-way teams. There were no wraps but two problems with deployment malfunctions. It was not clear if it was just one of those things or if it was something to do with packing. The 4-way team, Two Wrapped Up went for wine tasting trip by landing “somewear out dare in dem grapes.” Dinner was grilled tri-tip with bean and rice and home made tortillas. Saturday: With the clouds and hangovers from the night before, it was a slow start. Some of the teams remained the same, others reformed and still others, keeping with the CRWdog spirit, took newbies and novices for one on ones. Bart got his regional CRW judge rating and Micah his 4-stack. At the awards banquet, great music was provided by Chico’s brother’s band, Spur Of The Moment. There was a standing ovation and lit cigarette lighters when Chico stood in and played a couple of songs. Door prizes included things every CRWdogs can use: booze, Oka plum jelly, Oka Cup coffee mugs, Ken Oka panties and freefall paraphernalia. Sunday: Lower clouds and spotty rain. The 2-way Oka Cup has morphed into a coffee table and now needs to be shipped. 2-way went to Two Wrapped Up – Don Johnson and Chico Tomaselli. The “Not on our mantel” 4-way rot/seq Oka Cup went to the pickup team California Connection – Yuliya Korkh, Taylor Cole, Will Kitto. To ensure the trophy was not “forgotten” and left behind, team Redline taped it to the hood of Taylor’s car. The 2-way internet is still pending. 9th Annual Oka Cup 2010 Another great time!! Casual CRW competition: 2-way sequential, 4-way Rotation/Sequential, 2-way internet. A computer server problem caused a postponement of the internet event. There were no cutaways, no off-field landings, no injuries. The event brought out new and novice CRWdogs as well as highly experienced dogs. Jumpers came from 4 different states, CA, AZ, WA, ID. Friday, weather hampered jumping and grounded people. It turned into a rigging day and with the beer light turning on early. Ken’s tri-tip, beans and rice for dinner, yummmmmy! On Saturday, in pursuit of the Cup, some dogs braved the severe cold and damp to make a few skydives. What turnout to be highly successful sequential dives with low time CRWdogs, they were ecstatic. The rewards of a good skydive took the edge off of the cold and they continued to jump, trying the more difficult dives. 4-way teams; Calzoni, Redline; Age and Treachery 2-way teams; Spatula, DoJo’s100, Seared Meat and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Sunday, with a pending storm and lingering hangovers, the CRWdogs headed home. In conjunction with the CRW weekend, Lori Harness’s conducted a CF regional judge’s course with 7 candidates in attendance. 3 national judges and 1 regional director sat in and monitored the course. Saturday night was a combine dinner banquet with participants from Cheryl Stern’s accuracy contest. The gala soiree was hosted by Mara and Craig Stapleton. The Oka Cup went to team Calzoni in 4-way and team Spatula in 2-way. Some of the door prizes: Oka CRW coffee cups, Peeps, Oka lingerie, Easter Eggs with pullup cords, parachuting bunnies.
