What did you feel like on your first solo?
schattenjaeger replied to SDiver218's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Haha, I'm planning to do about the same thing. I'm gonna toss myself out the plane and enjoy getting unstable for the first time(instead of being like OH NO GONNA FAIL MUST GET STABLE)then just enjoy the view -
haha, I was kinda rambling while I was typing, just consider it like two questions, sorry. I'm alllmost tempted to go all new and see if I can finance it, 'cuz I'm good at coming up with smaller amounts of money quickly, but bahh:( I guess theroretically I could ask my parents to pay for used gear, then pay them back in installments. Man, picking an expensive hobby when you're 18 is a pain
-
'cuz I'm gonna deplete all my money after AFF:( then having to rent's gonna limit me to at mininum 4 jumps a month, occasionally more. Obviously once I get my own gear that's gonna double. but until then, that's like 48 jumps a year at worst So how cheap can one get used gear? And I don't mean like super crappy 15 year old gear, at least something decent, but reasonably priced. And what are the odds I could make payments on it? at the very least when summer comes around I can work more and get more money!

Oh yah:) You might be older than your instructors, but in the air, they'll be your worried parents gently holding onto you(their child) as you take your very first baby steps.

If there was a little wet spot somewhere in the back corner behind the copilot's seat, that was probably from my first jump

AFF 4: by popular request
schattenjaeger replied to Nightingale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think a big thing is to not overthink it at all, and just do everything possible to relax! I had been going with a week or two apart for a while and had to do level 3 three times:( But then I came back and did 4, 5, and 6 this past Saturday, and on 4 I was a little nervous and had been thinking about it the whole week, and it was a bit shaky but I pulled through. Then on 5, I was a bit more relaxed, and I tumbled on the exit and wound up thrashing all over the air before I just stopped, breathed, and arched! Next thing I know my JM was laughing her ass off at me and motioning for me to do my 360s, which I did flawlessly, with a big smile on my face(tumbling was fun:) 6 was just great. Like most fun ever great -
wait, hang on, did we already loan it, or we ARE loaning it...well, common sense dictates we already did since you used it. Well, you're welcome! Hehe, I didn't even notice it was gone this weekend
-
Yah we do:) And thanks to you I get to ride our Otter even though we probably won't have enough to really manifest it! Everyone wins!

first solo STABLE exit, first standup landing, first hard PLF, first buttslide landing(unintentional), hmm, I think I'm just gonna drop about 150 or so on beer when I get done with AFF:) Did levels 4,5, and 6 today, passed 'em all. Five was a blast, struggling to regain stability whilst clawing at the air and seeing my instructor's bemused expression when I made it over was probably the most fun ever. Period. Until level 6 when I was SUPPOSED to tumble

On another approach to this topic, don't think you did a bad job! You landed uninjured as did all parties involved, AND you learned important lessons so next time you can do better and learn even more! I'd say in that regard it didn't go too bad at all! It's also good that you realized you weren't gonna get the PC on the main out without assistance, and went for the reserve, just like you were instructed(I hope...)
-
A question on your number 4, on average about how much does an AFF-I make? Yes, I'm sure it's not much, and obviously it's something they do for more than just the money, but I am curious...
-
Plus you learn sooo much about the gear. I had the basics down before, but now I know precisely what's happening from the moment I pull the pilot chute to the cutaway and deploying of the reserve! Heck, today I even got to pull the cutaway handle and see how the whole thing comes apart and goes back together. So now I know WHY to make sure the yellow cable is unobstructed, not just to do it!(well, I knew stuck cable = no cutaway, but I wasn't sure of the mechanics of it)
-
Yay! 30mph winds today, so I got to do more practice packing! This time I was packing the chute that I'll probably be using for a bit(a Javelin container with a Sabre 170, MUCH easier than the Sabre 210 I was using at first) Hands aren't all torn up, got the closing pin through the loop on my FIRST try this time! Every subsequent try took me the usual 5 minutes of grunting and cursing, but I'm sure that's a good sign. If the winds are down tomorrow, I'll go and jump that rig, then repack it and jump my own pack job for the first time! Woooo...
-
Nope, my 3 is hovering too. Anyways, now that I think about it, I felt the foot hit something after I had already been stood up in the harness, and by that time they aren't anywhere near me, are they? I probably just kicked the back of my left foot and didn't realize. Funny what your body'll do when you're going 120-15 in like 4 seconds.
-
If you don't mind me asking, how'd that south of 400' jump turn out? Not to badly obviously since you're here to tell us about it, but I'm still curious...
-
I've had the same instructors for every jump and it took me 3 tries for level 3, so it's not all the instructors
-
Congratulations! I just passed my level 3 yesterday! Third time's the charm >_>
-
Yah, I second that! I really wanna be doing it myself, even though I trust our packers greatly. To me it seems akin to learning to drive and getting someone else to check your oil, air your tires, get gas, etc....ok, horrible analogy but you get the point(maybe). Heck, I'm not even too worried so long as I have someone supervising. I'm gonna get concerned when I'm doing it by myself and I have no one to look to every 5 seconds to make sure I didn't just tie my canopy in a knot unknowingly
