I say don't do it. I never get one. But if you feel the flu coming on, even a little bit, check this thread for a quick remedy. You have to catch it early, though, for best results. Lou

What do you mean? It's all OTC and it's always worked for me! Lou

Here's what I do when that sort of thing hits me fast (about 1/2 hour before you're ready to sleep): 1) Find two extra strength tylenol 2) Find two maximum strength sudafed 3) Take all four pills with a fast shot of Nyquil (not the Dayquil, not the cherry red stuff, it has to be the "death-fuckin'-green-flavor"). 4) Chase it quickly with a shot a tequila (in a pinch you can substitute some JD). When you wake up in the morning, you should be good to go, but toss back a couple huge vitamin C pills with a glass of orange juice to keep it from coming back. Lou Because if a little is good, more (a LOT more) must be better!

I'm surprised at two things here. #1 That you can't get Fat Tire. Since they started contract brewing it seems their distribution has gotten huge. Bars (and stores) around here usually carry Fat Tire as their "good" beer, right after the Bud, Bud Light, Coors, Coor Light rhetoric. #2 That you think Fat Tire is good. ;) Ever since they started contract brewing, I feel the beer has really gone downhill. I'm not a real fan anymore. New Belgium 1554 is a pretty good stout, though. Good choice with the Arrogant Bastard. Lou

Do you have any good close-up pics?

I hate this debate. Women expect us to pick it up, then put it down, but they don't want to be expected to put it down, then lift it up? What happened to equality? I much prefer a urinal. Prefereably one that's goes all the way to the floor, none of this half height stuff. And I like it to be full of ice, so that I can try to bore a hole all the way through. I've thought about putting one in my house... right next to the beer taps. Lou

Woohoo! The worst happened to me today. Last night I try to get to bed early because I have an early auto race to hit this morning (still wrapping up my final season of this madness). So I catch about 30 minutes of the Japanese Grand Prix. In the morning, I get up, start watching a little bit more, because I just couldn't keep myself from turning on the tube (and TiVo is great). I finally get my ass out the door thinking that someone is going to ruin the surprise for me at the track. I'm not there 3 minutes when I hear in the background, "...so Kimi ended up taking second." Argh! I hate that. Ruined the whole race for me since I knew how it was going to end. Lou PS - I usually make it a point to quarantine myself on Sunday mornings so that the race doesn't get ruined.

Pale Ales and IPA's. Scottish Ambers are good too. Mostly Pacific Northwest, though AZ has some great local brews. The best: Sonora Burning Bird followed closely by Stone's Arrogant Bastard (brewed in San Diego county). Lou

Reading the Superfly made me go and take a look ath manufacturers website as well as do some research on pop-tops. Since everyone pretty much says the Superfly is a good container (without taking the pop-top into consideration), but everyone seems to have a DIFFERENT opinion on pop-tops, does anyone have any experience with the TSE Zerox? I did want to hijack that other thread, so I'm posting another about the Zerox. The Zerox is the same price, looks to be pretty much the same container, but doesn't have any of the negatives of the pop-top. Is the Zerox any good? And who knows anything about the different materials TSE uses? It's the first manuf. I've seen offer leather, suede, "Alienskin", etc. That Alienskin looks like plastic that might tear. Is it durable? Lou

I just voted for other because the Neptune wasn't listed. I don't have an audible right now, but when I buy one it's going to be the Neptune. Mostly because of the upgradable software function. If they do it right, it should just get better and better. Plus it can be used as a visual, especially on night jumps. Lou

Hit a snag: FAA Class 3 medical clearance
LouYoung replied to mailin's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Here's what I would do if I were in your place: 1) Change my hair color from red to blue. ;) 2) Go to a different DZ. 3) Forget to mention that I have an electronic gizmo in my chest. 4) Jump like hell. Obviously you and your doctor are comfortable with it. You are the one that has the last responsibility for your life. Use it. Lou -
About the same story for me. In 1994 I did the AFF program and jumped around 35 times. My last jump was in '95. Last month I decided that the auto racing I had been doing was getting a little old and started jumping again with my younger brother. A couple instructors at the DZ remembered my face, but not my abilities. I had the A License to prove I had gone through it before, but didn't have my log book (because I'm stupid and I threw it away during a move) (residential, not bowel). So they've got me going through the static-line "fast-track", which isn't as fast as what Blahr described. First jump class, static line, PRCP (twice because I de-arched one the first one). I'm cleared for freefall now, so I figure I'll do a hop-n-pop and then a 10 second and they'll be comfortable letting me get myself into trouble. The thing that I don't like about this stuff is that since I did AFF before, I'm not really familiar with this static line "hang from the strut stuff." At least that's what I blame the de-arch on, and the fact that I was trying to get the practice cord out before the static line popped the pilot chute. ;) I'm much more comfortable diving out. Lou

I was doing some reading on DZ.com and found the SkyVentures press release that mentioned the construction of a tunnel financed and under way in Phoenix. The press release was Spring-ish 2002. So I did some other searching on the site and the most recent post I can find regarding the Phoenix tunnel is from January 2003 where people are talking about trying to get tunnel jobs. I've never seen any evidence of a tunnel here and a check at the SkyVentures website revealed that they don't even have a tunnel in Phoenix listed as "under-construction." Does anyone know what happened to that project? Thanks! Lou

Just did First jump... again! (somewhat long)
LouYoung replied to LouYoung's topic in Introductions and Greets
I've been lurking for a whole 2 weeks or so, so I thought I'd introduce myself. My first first jump was back in '92... or '93. It was an AFF jump given to me for my birthday from my best friend and my friend at the time. (The girl I haven't seen in over 10 years and the guy I haven't seen in at least 5). I was poor, so I never got around to doing AFF 2 for a year after that. A new friend I met was pretty well off and he used to jump up in Montana before he moved out to AZ to go to college. When he moved, he tossed is logbook (having only 20 or so jumps in it). I berated him. How could he do such a thing? He figured he'd never jump again. But he got interested again and then he offered to pay for six of his friends to go and do a first jump static line. He didn't include me, because I had already done my first jump. Damn! But heading out to the DZ to watch them all do their first jumps got me started. I still had my cheesy little first jump logbook, so I brought it back to the DZ and the guys there recognized my jumpmaster (he wasn't teaching there anymore), Bill Will, if you used to jump Desert Sky Ranch in Buckeye 10 to 12 years ago, so they gave me a little refresher of the AFF1 stuff and brought me right into my level 2 jump. I was hooked. As I went through my AFF jumps, the pool of friends that originally went jumping got smaller and smaller. Four of them never returned. Two of them went through until static line jump number 3 (they both got freaked out by different things that I can detail later if anyone's really interested). But the Montana jumper and I continued until we were off student status and then had a great time learning what we could by jumping together. Then shit happens, he goes into the hospital, we can't jump together for a while, he dies (not from skydiving). I lay off from jumping for a few months. I come back and do another 3 or 4, but find myself really bored and I quit. At some point, during one of my many residential moves, I toss my logbook, finally understanding why he did years before. I figured I'd never jump again. Then my brother starts getting near jumping age and expresses the desire to jump. What am I to do? For his 18th birthday I buy him an AFF first jump. While I'm at the dropzone watching his first jump, I fall in love with the DZ atmosphere again. And love what technology has brought to canopies. Holy shit! These guys are nuts. He loves the jump. He's poor. He doesn't jump for 2 more years. I finally do some research and find out how he can jump on the (relatively) cheap (compared to AFF). Static line, pay cash (for a discount), only go to 3500 feet, etc. I tell him that I'll go jumping with him if he can commit to going all the way (more fun if you go through it with someone else). So two weeks ago he and I did our second first jump classes. I stilll have my A-License, so I think I'll probably get through the static line progression faster, but we'll still be going through it together and we're going to have a great time. I love the atmosphere, I love jumping out of planes, and now I have more money to do it! ;) Anyway, my name is Lou Young, his is Ben. We jump at Desert Sky Center in Buckeye. It's great to find this forum for all of us to get together (didn't have his in the early 90's). I'm so close, that I'll bet I find myself driving to Eloy during the holiday boogie for a couple days to meet some of you crazies in person. Hope to meet some of you soon. Lou
