Why did you start skydiving/ BASE jumping?
whatever replied to lkolkin's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I started skydiving because I wanted to learn BASE. I wanted to learn BASE because I have always had this instinctive urge to fling myself over the edge and into the open air whenever I stood near the edge of a cliff, building, or bridge, or whatever…. I preferred the idea of finding out what going with the urge felt like as opposed to always controlling it. (I have since done this and I’m happy I have made the right decision for me.) I have some urges I can control, some that indulging in poses no significant risk and yet others that require some form of preparation if I rationally choose to do them, or in case I cannot control my urges to do the irrational and do them anyway… So, who is more of a freak? I would have to side with your s.o. and say you, as I do what I do despite the risks, not because of them. At least that’s what I like to believe, that I would do these things even if there was no risk and I would get just as much out of them. I’m pretty sure that’s the case for me, but is there any way to really know? Does it even matter why we started? Maybe it only matters what we do now and in the future? And lastly, I cannot resist the urge to paraphrase this, as maybe some folks out there feel like this: “Ours is not to wonder why, ours is but to do and maybe die.” soon to be gone -
Calling people who have had lots of Cutaways
whatever replied to skyclownUK's topic in Safety and Training
when I was jumping at a DZ in Kent, England, there was a guy who earned himself the nickname of 'Chopper'... by cutting away on something like jump no. 19 (which was my packjob, so maybe I'm to blame), then having another cutaway 2 or 3 jumps later.... I heard he was up to 3 cutaways before jump no. 40, maybe some of the DZ regulars can comment on that... Chopper, if you're reading, share the story and I hope you're still jumping and enjoying it. cheers Sam soon to be gone -
thanks Tonto info much appreciated will they have beach landings in Margate at the boogie? unfortunately I'm going to miss the Porter in Cirtusdal.... but then, it's a bit crowded if you're on a load with mostly 'buffels'... the KingAir boogie sounds great, I've really developed a liking for them since I've started jumping one here in Canada 14 grand in 10 minutes - now that's a plane-ride I can enjoy! cheers Sam PS - congrats on 4000, just saw the post.... soon to be gone

*bump* So, no-one's got any info they want to share on that? I guess technically this should be in the events forum, but I thought I'm more likely to get it seen here... maybe it's just that practically no-one knows what PASA is.... soon to be gone

Hey DVD for sure 2 would be better than one, especially if you're feeling like the giving the people who paid upfront a special rate thanks for those long thankless hours behind the lens and the countless more after that and all to capture our '15 seconds'..... cheers soon to be gone

Hey there. Anyone know when/where they plan to have the 2004 PASA Nationals? Also any boogies they have planned for 2004? I couldn't find anything on the site. thanks soon to be gone

That sounds and looks really cool. The thing I've always wanted to build, though, is a reverse bungy that will shoot you high enough into the sky to deploy a parachute. I know this is the bit where a bunch of people post back saying that for that to happen the acceleration needed would be unsurvivable, but: -the acceleration needed is just a function of the distance you use to get up to 'escape velocity' you could calculate how fast you need to be going to reach the right height if you stayed in your slowest falling position (we'd disregard tracking, as you should be able to keep a steady belly fly all the way up if you've got some skydiving experience and we launch you on your back - you're just 'seeing' the relative wind and it shouldn't matter if you're going up or down through the air) then, if you can keep an upside down sitfly or head-down (head-up?? : ) ) position, you would gain more altitude then, once we know what speed you need to leave our launch device at (this is also a function of the height where you leave the launch device), we know how tall it needs to be! make no mistake, it would be very tall to keep a reasonably 'low' acceleration, like 4 G's or so (some rollercoasters do that much) but the theory is all sound and I think we should build it! hell, if you make it big enough, you could launch formations on it and they could turn points on the way up..... I know I'd be one the first people to line up for a launch.... soon to be gone

I say the canteen at a certain DZ I used to jump..... If you could take their coffee machine out you'd be doing everyone a favour

I just wish they'd give you real nerdy stats like: -sample rates -accuracies -resolutions -number of data points you can log -what data you can log (and download) -wether you can get GPS altitude as well as barometric altitude as well as barometric pressure at the same time?

Hey http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=105 anyone used this product for wingsuiting flying? or anything else skydiving related? (insert freefly joke here) thanks

hi guys I'm taking up BASE soon and I've gotten the following equipment advice from the (few) BASE jumpers I know: CR Blackjack (rather than Ace, for better sinking/backing up performance) WLO toggles Morpheus Gargoyle (dynamic corners, pin protector flap, pins rather than velcro because they can be set lighter and don't need periodic replacing like velcro does) I would welcome any comment on these recommendations from people with experience with these products and/or BASE. I'm not trolling by suggesting pins and vents for a beginner, so flame away if you feel the need. thanks
