The housing cluster fuck occurred because deregulation not only allowed it but encouraged it. What little regulation existed was circumvented thru practices which allowed a few to reap incredible reward off the stupidity of many. Both parties are guilty of allowing this and encouraging the business who cut off their noses to spite the collective face of our economy. These people stole, pure and simple, and every president since nixon has conceded to the wishes of the few who stood to benefit.

    Offshore banking write downs are far smaller for corporations than for personal and small businesses.As long as securitization of derivatives thru spv's(tax exempt business) are allowed there is no great need by the corporations to funnel money offshore. Tax law allows them to tie up losses and gains in a manner that greatly reduces their tax exposure. Those making 10's of millions in bonuses,like the drug dealers and politicians utilize offshore banking with tremendous personal results.

    The economy controls the political parties far more than the parties control the economy. Every president since Reagan has made it a priority to LIMIT the control of the economy by the government. With predictable results.

    Mate you really ought to look at your posts from the Katrina days. Obama deserves the same treatment Bush received while he was responsible for the well being of our nation. You defended Bush, I understand your opinions are largely not your own. Maybe a little introspection can help with that.

    I figured it was cost. It seems to me that they should have..gasp...faced heavier regulation.(Before anyone starts I understand that the existing regulations are crippling them causing them to drive up our cost and likely wouldn't have done anything.) The regulations they are going to face will likely be far stricter and costlier as an afterthought. Similarly, this being a man made disaster the corporation involved shouldn't have to bear the cost. The government should step in. Unlike natural disaster where private citizens should be expected to pick themselves up by the boot straps.
