  1. I would think of taking my own rig for the following benefits: * comfort. I didn't even know legstraps could be comfortable under canopy until I got my rig. * safety. I know who packs and maintains my gear, and what its state of maintenance is. I also know where the handles are. (OK, I have only 4 jumps on my new rig, but as I get more this will become more true.) And I know how the canopy flies, which I would find comforting at 3k over a strange DZ. * availability. I don't need to know how many rental rigs they have where I'm going, which canopy (and possibly harness) sizes they have, which rigs might be out for repacks, or how early I need to be there to ensure I get one. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  2. I thought they did that a long time ago and called it the Hornet/Pilot... -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  3. I think there is too much prior art for breakable planes, including ones that descend to the ground under a parachute, in the skydiving community. I can think of at least one jump of mine that was aborted (well, delayed until the next day) because the plane broke on the load before mine. And we've seen the pictures of planes with s/l students in tow with the s/l around their leg and the reserve open, helping the plane to the ground.... -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  4. Hey, don't knock the view of static line training in the middle of fields! Snohomish is Gorgeous. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  5. When I was last paying attention, it looked like retail for Glock factory new magazines in regular sizes was $25. That got "normal people" up to 10 rounds, regardless of the magazine height, and it got LEO the "original designed" number of rounds. So if the size ban expires, I would expect Glock to machine off the "LEO" portion of the magazine dies and start pumping out what you want at very attractive prices. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  6. please explain: 1) why would you need that kind of firepower? 2)your logon name is 'peaceful' jeffrey ??? Peace through firepower??? mp The reason I would need the 11th round in a magazine would be when I pull the trigger the 10th time and the threat isn't neutralized. Thankfully, there is a "loophole" around the 10 round magazine limit - carry more magazines and practice reloading. Magazine switches should be doable in 3 seconds. Personally, I was pissed that the 10-round limit required the 10th round to be a bitch to put in, because the law requires magazines to be designed in such a way that they couldn't possibly hold 11 rounds. And in reply to your question about peaceful's nickname, I ask this: why are peace officers allowed to use all the "bad" guns with "excessive firepower" that regular people aren't? -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  7. I personally think a Black man running as a Republican has the best chance to be first. I don't think it will be Powell. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  8. Both the passenger and the TM were wearing BM suits. Would that be considered a biplane or a 2-stack? -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  9. I jumped a Triathlon 190 and a Hornet 190 both around a dozen times before I decided which one to get. I found the Hornet was like a Triathlon on "greased bearings" - it was just smoother all around. The Hornet also has a flatter glide (which most people say is a good thing) as expected for 9 cell vs. 7 cell. The Hornet has a much stronger first stage of flare. Pull too hard and it will pop back up. Front riser turns on the Hornet can be a pain; both Hornet 190s I've flown have a tendency to buck, presumably because of a steering line length issue. I believe the Triathlon was nicer on front riser turns, but I can't remember for sure. I believe Triathlons are better-configured for "casual CRW". I know with some common mods people do use Triathlons for that; I haven't heard of anyone using Hornets for CRW. My WL was 1.1 for all my flying, so YMMV. My advice is just "jump them both and compare". The differences should be big enough that anyone jumping both would detect them and be able to choose. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  10. OK, I just remembered a device automobile racers use to help prevent overheating: ice vests. Googly-clicky -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  11. Hunting left and right is called "hunting".
  12. I've had, uh, one jump on a Hornet 190. Flew like a Triathlon 190 on well-greased bearings. Just to follow up my own post, I bought a new Hornet 190 with my first rig. Very nice ride. Opens so smooth it scared me on the first jump. Almost no trouble packing it even at 0 jumps! -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  13. You could do a lot of butt-slide landings... -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  14. I find the planes to be hottest on the ground, during pile-in, taxi, and takeoff. In planes with roll-up doors, someone in back often keeps it slightly open with their foot for airflow. In 182s it's hell during pile-in (when the plane may have been baking in the sun for a while), not so bad during taxi (when the prop blows a lot of air in the door, and hell again on takeoff (when the door must be closed). Of course, all this is talk about Western Washington in the Summer - where two weeks of 90+ F cripples all of us. I'm about to get a summer RW suit made with extra-light material so I can have a decent compromise between coolness and smooth flying. Shorts and t-shirt feels lovely in the summer, but flies funny.
  15. What could go wrong skydiving in two la-z-boys with a coffee table, a TV, a couple potted plants, a telephone and a lamp? Well, the potted plant could fly off the table and smack one guy in the face, making him bleed... -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  16. Eating pork is like skydiving: if you don't like the waiver, you can go somewhere else. And you, ultimately, are responsible for your own safety. If a cook gives you a slab of pork that looks underdone, just bake or fry it some more right in front of them. They won't mind. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  17. I used to blame those jumpers until I finally rode in a Twin Otter. Everybody can't spot a plane with 18 people in it. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  18. Dang, I get those periodically myself. (Mostly on a Hornet, which I have been told is similar to a Sabre2. What "similar" means in terms of canopy temperament is unclear.) I thought it was just me.
  19. What do you mean "fell off"? Skydiving parts are not supposed to "fall off." -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  20. * If it's too cold, you don't want it bad enough * When swooping thin ice, don't try to drag / slide * The wetter the ground is, the more likely you are to fall over -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  21. It means the binary clickiness quotient of something has been changed from "not clicky" (or "none") to "clicky" (or "some"). The lay man would say "now one can click on it (and it will do something)." -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  22. Wow, what beautiful eyes. (For a snowwoman.) -=-=-=-=- Pull.
  23. I find if you can look straight down while hanging on the plane before exit and be completely OK with that, the dive will be very relaxed. And it doesn't look that far down. It always looks like about 3k away, just everything gets really small above 3k. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
