The first parachute jumps are supposed to have been made shortly before the first world war, and it was quickly adapted to use by Observers in Hydrogen filled balloons at 3000 feet over the front lines. If you examine one of the camopies they used ( from photos) they are exactly the same as the 24 to 28 ft rounds, all white, the kind I began with in 1962. The material was a twilll of silk or nylon. In 1917, the Germans used a Heineke harness of white cotton, and a canopy about 24-28ft diameter. There are many photos of pilots wearing the harness, and a seat pack. The Royal Flying Corp refused to allow the pilots to wear a chute, because they would be tempted to exit an aircraft that might be repaired if they could only get it back to earth. On Aug 9 1918, a guy I knew (Spike Jackson) was flying an SE5a, and bullets crashed into his dashboard. He looked over his shoulder when the bullets stopped, and told me he saw two Fokker D7 aircraft collide in their hurry to get him. Both pilots bailed out, and Leutnant Wentz opened his chute. The other german pilot was a real ACE, Leutnant Eric Lowenhardt, with about 40+ victories. His chute failed to open. About 18 yrs ago, Spike asked me if I could find out who had shot him down. I gave him the names of the two pilots, and shortly after that, Spike died at 80+ years of age. After Jackson's aircraft was disabled by that gunfire, he descended in a wide seeping circle, and he saw Lt Wentz ahead of him. Spike put his finger on the trigger, but then decided not to shoot a man under the canopy, and he crash landed his aircraft. He was immediately taken prisoner by the Germans, and was glad he hadnt killed Wentz....because he would have been shot immediately. Bill Cole D-41.

based on your entries on this thread, I can see you imply that you received your education from a bowl of alphabets in milk. i have been told that provides an IQ equal to that educated person's shoe size. BILLVON: That is NOT a personal attack....just a suggestion of possibility...but a damn good one I'd say.

I only had one malfunction on the Delta II. Mine was USA made, but I owned 7 or 8 Canadian mades, and they were mal prone bigtime. I gave them away. A friend of mine had many mals on Canadian made Irvins. I also jumped the Irvin Lazer (round) main chute. They were supplied to the Special Forces in Ecuador, and they had some lines sewn through the modifications, really messy work. When they were made as should be, they were a good round...much like the Para Commander.

Have you tried both with milk Justin??? How would you know???? ...

its really too bad you dont know what your talking about. Your drivel makes no sense whatever....

There have been several entries in this thread which qualify...but Billvon must have skipped over them till he got to mine....which wasnt personal to anyone. Oh well, thats life isnt it? ..

I agree....but the Bible isnt fiction, it is the very TRUTH of God Almighty....and God cannot lie. Try reading it, better still, try searching out its hidden values. Maybe you'd learn something of value. ...

not at all, my friend. I wonder why BILLVON deleted that entry.....maybe it was "his" mirror I referred to ???

if the pilot chute melts at all, you are stuck with it. There has been many deaths "in the old days" when pilot chutes melted to the boot bracket and the guy couldnt get rid of the main. I assure you, its a deadly scenario. As for the flour, you cant control the amount that comes out if it on your foot, and its usually all at once in a big cloud. Partially opening the top, you can gently shake it, and even keep a finger over the part of the flap, and you can control it to a nice even trail An experienced jumoper should be able to hang on to a stick with an M 18, but not a novice. I have seen large grass fires caused by droppage. One just has to remember to keep it in the hand not used for deployment ..

It takes a twisted man to twist the truth like you do. As for meterology....God created it in the first place. You are ever learning...and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. I'm sure if you look at your bathroom mirror, you find written along the bottom.... Objects in mirror are dumber than they appear Bill Cole D-41 ..

Okay...its a triangle with rounded corners hows that? Comnpare it with the Delta II Parawing photo on original thread entry. no rounded corners. I jumped the Delta II for years...and at one air show, I had such a strong wind blowing up the rear of the chute, I had a very difficult time turning into the wind. However, that is what make jumping so much fun....almost buying it....and then beating the odds. ..... Bill Cole D-41 ....

Most of what the woman says is true. However, God does NOT hate America. He has shown the world that He has blessed America far beyond any other country. It is the sinful lifestyle of many Americans that God hates. God loves the sinner.....hates the sin. I also think any self respecting person wouldnt be seen dead on Stern's show. He is the sick of the sick. Bill Cole D-41. ...

another way in which you can manage it, is to WIRE the smoke bomb to a stick about 12 inches long, and that way you are holding it away from your face, suit, and gear. Remember to hold it ( or the flour) in the hand you dont use to activate your main. The flour is the best for a one shot jump deal. Fly base and let other come to you. I had one guy fly through the flour and he ate an unbaked cake for about 60 minutes. It really was funny to see. Dont shake the flour too hard or have too large an opening in the top of the bag....you'll lose it all at once. You'll find it works great with a clear blue sky. I've worn smoke bombs on many boot brackets, and you WILL NEVER get it out of your jumpsuit or off your footwear. Bill Cole D-41

you cant categorize this under "style"....he obviously doesnt have any . what a stupid topic

The CAF are going to equip the skyhawks with beach umbrellas. The CAF has no money...its all being spent trying to get the Prime Minister to leave office. as for the skyhawks...they assign a member for two years and then he's gone. By the time he has learbned to jump they take him off the team. real smart eh? Bill Cole Hemp 6 .... ....

you will get dye on the leg of your jumpsuit, and its hard to get rid of it. be aware of where your feet are when you dump the rig, because if the pilot chute hits the smoke bomb, it will melt the PC and you'll have a dandy malfunction. If its only for one jump, take a bag of flour, and open the top and as you are in freefall, shake it gfently....it gives a nice white trail against a blue sky, and easy to see...no damage to anything. Bill Cole D-41 be sure to get a small bag.....about 1 or 2 lbs most. ...

Its amazing the way the press makes gods of these two air heads. Both are sleaze....and there is sure a lot more interesting things taking place in this world than to be bothered with such garbage. ... ...

The photo accompanying this thread is a Delta II Parawing. You can see the OSI hanging down at the rear. It measured about 7 inches by 36 inches, and was 1/4 inch thick. Bill Cole D-41 ... ... ...

perhaps you have a point....I have only seen performers in North America...and Euopean teams on film...but I simply cannot imagine anyone being better in every aspect of a show in the manner the TBirds are. I have walked and talked with many of them, and simply cannot imagining a better all round performance...in the air and on the ground. Dazzling all the way. If its possible to be better....I sure would like to witness it.

The Blue Angels are truly a great team...but I think the Thunderbirds are BEST. At a hotel after a show, one of the Thunderbird pilots was perfectly attired, and when he spoke, he did so in such a manner as to bring the best PR out on behalf of his government. People were amazed at how professional he was. Real Class A few years back, the Thunderbirds were practicing over the Nevada desert..the flight leader miscalculated, and plowed into the ground. Perfectly professional, so did left wing, right wing, and tail end of the diamond formation. Not one of the flight broke off to save his skin.....even if he could have. Four dead...professionals to the very end.

dont get too excited.....we all have em !

The Thunderbirds are the very best air demo unit anywhere in the world. I am glad he punched out and is okay. I used to live on the air show circuit, and was always amazed at what class they showed...on the ground and in the air.Total CLASS ACT ! ! ! The blue Angels are also great, and in 1965, I was first to get to the body of a B.A. pilot after he crashed. I was completely broke up for three days.Absolutely devastated...and it still hurst bigtime to think about it. I hope you dont mind, but in his memory, his name was Dick Oliver. I was okay for 20 minutes after finding him, but when the rest of the team flew directly over me and a few others where his body was, trailing red, white and blue smoke...and his slot missing...that did me in. Thats all I can say....my eyes are watery already. As for the Snowbirds....good pilots ...lousy equipment. The Thunderbirds....the very very very best. Bill Cole D-41

I'm glad he is home and safe. I feel bad when I hear of every other guy who gets killed, and the war is over according to GWB. I hope they all get home soon and safe.

Last week, a person ignored a panhandler, and was stabbed in the back.Torontio the good? If you want to see poverty that really deserves a handout, you'll find it in Quito Ecuador. I was walking there with my army escort, and an old woman in rags said something to me in Spanish. The soldier made threatening sounds and we walked past her for about 30 feet, and I told the soldier in my little bit of Spanish" 1 moment senor" and I walked back to the woman and handed her a roll of Ecuadorian money. I dont know how much was in it, because I wasnt familiar with the currency. The soldier got peeved with me, and asked me why I did it. I told him God had blessed me with the job of training their Special Forces, so I was just passing some of it on. He shook his head...either in disbelief...or disgust.

I used a Delta II Parawing, which is the canopy described in theprevious reply. I made hundreds of jumps on it, and only had 1 malfunction. It was Americans made by Irvin, and I had about 7 or 8 Canadian made Irvin wings (same canopy) but they all were malfunction prone. These came out before squares, and they sure would forgive a bad spot. They flew well, opened well, and would out perform a Para Commander except for the landings in no winds. If there was a wind, you always had standup landings. The "band" that he mentioned was called an OSI (opening shock inhibitor) and it was wrapped around color coded lines. It was a bulky chute, and required a three pin pack pack. All in All, a great chute. I gave mine away for 1 jump about 5 years ago, and I still have some photos of it.That was the canopy I used on the Canadian High Akltitude record jump. The Thunderbow was not really triangular...but much like a Para Commander. Bill Cole D-41.
