Not sure about cats but I heard an urban myth that Wild Turkey tried a marketing stunt where they threw a load of turkeys out of a balloon and they all slammed into the road in New York in front of an audience because they were overfed farmed turkeys that can't fly.

What's the most mals anyone's had
darrenspooner replied to darrenspooner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was wondering who's had the most cutaway and reserve rides (not test jumpers or intentional cutaways). I know 2 people who have had 11 in about 5000 jumps. My reason for asking is, if you have plenty of them do they get less freaky? Not that my recent mal freaked me, but it certainly wiped the smile off my face for a few minutes. My AFF instructor once said to me "there's only 2 sorts of skydivers - those that have had a mal and those that are going to". Just wondering, statistically, when to expect my next one. -
I had the same problem on my brand new sabre 2 150. Diving to the right almost every jump, and putting in line twists on a few occasions. Had it packed by 3 other people including a senior rigger, and the same thing happened. I spoke to PD, riggers, other owners, left posts on here, and I did everything that was suggested, but with no resolution. The last straw was when it wound up, turned into a high speed spinning mal, and left me hanging under my reserve. Its now back with PD getting checked over. Even though I'm a newbie, I've packed close on 100 pack jobs, 60 of which have been on two Hornet 150s, and 25 on a ZP170, and I never had this problem before. I hope it gets resolved. PD have been great about it and arranged a loaner for me in the UK

Sorry RkyMtnHigh, I meant to direct my dissatisfaction towards Dharma1976 for making comments about "silly brits". No offence to you intended. I just got told off by a moderator for being mean.

Silly Brit? Them's fightin' words. Cruising for a slapping my friend.

Go to your local gear shop and they'll make you one. Failing that, there seem to be plenty laying around at dropzones

Milestones in Skydiving
darrenspooner replied to RkyMtnHigh's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Shouldn't we aim for the milestone of going metric and aim for Kilometre-stones now? By the way, 1st mal at 124, that's my milestone. I feel like a grown up now -
Fatigue usually follows any prolonged period of anxious arousal. Adrenalin acts as the messenger which tells your body what to do when you are exposed to something that you perceive as dangerous. Your major muscle groups tighten in order to prepare you to deal with something. It is the overworking of most of your major muscle groups for a prolonged period that gives fatigue, but you are right that this response is a consequence of the activation of the anxious response, which in part, is related to adrenalin.

Yeah, I guess I agree. My recalcitrant hornet was probably a friday afternoon canopy, although the one I have borrowed is a bit dodgy too. Yeah yeah, I know what your thinking, I can't pack worth shit. But the same thing has happened when 3 other people packed it, and the same thing has happened to the poor chap that bought it off me. I have also read lots of posts on her about spankings from a Hornet. Luck of the draw I say

I hope I can agree with you when PD have looked at my Sabre 2. Its a hard diving on opening bitch, and gave me my first mal two weeks ago. Once its open and levelled out its lovely, but til then throw a coin and bet on what might happen.

Skydiving after a head injury???
darrenspooner replied to Zheka's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you're asking me that question its from professional knowledge -
And may I applaud you for your responsible attitude

Adrenalin is a neurotransmitter produced by your adrenal glands, which are on your kidneys. We only produce a certain amount of it each day, and once its gone its gone. Its why newbies are less anxious after a few jumps on any given day than after their first jump. We habituate to anxiety with repeated exposures to any given stumuli, in theory. But this is to do with behaviour and learning theory and not really a change in physiological functioning. The anxious response is activated by perception and cognition, unless you are talkikng about a startle response, which is hard-wired and very physiological. If you want to learn about the neurophysiology of anxiety read Jeffrey Grey's stuff, and if you want to learn about behaviour and habituation of the anxious response then read about B F Skinner, pigeons and operant conditioning, both of which you will find on medline. In simple terms though, over repeated exposures to a stimulus we become desensitised, and therefore habituate to the emotional response, whether its anxiety or pleasure. So if you're anxious about skydiving just jump your arse off and you will over time become less anxious.

No, no trim change that they mentioned. Rusty just said that the variability was within limits and its okay to use it.

Performance Designs Bad Attitude
darrenspooner replied to binkster's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I just sent my Sabre 2 back for testing because it seems there is a problem with it. They have been prompt, polite, helpful and very professional at all times. They have arranged a dealer here in the UK to send me a demo Sabre 2 to use while they are testing mine. So far I can't fault them. -
Just in case anyone is interested, PD said I can get this reserve repacked. By the way, the line lengths were 111 1/2 and so on, not 11 1/2.

I did 40 jumps on a Hornet 150, and it was a slammer. I managed to just about tame it to make it acceptable on openings. But then I could afford a new rig, so I bought a Sabre 2 150, which dives hard to the right on opening, and itsnow back with PD after it dived so hard it twisted up and went into a high speed spinning mal requiring a cutaway. Meanwhile, I've borrowed another Hornet 150, and its a slammer! Thinking of going to rounds. The Hornet flies great once you get over the opening.

Just saw this on ebay if anyone's interested http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=91561&item=7144885251&rd=1

My old rig used to have this problem. My rigger put some 'tensioners' on the leg strap buckles and it was absolutely fine after that. They just look like little springy metal clips. That's about all I can say, but it worked for me.

Skydiving after a head injury???
darrenspooner replied to Zheka's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This will depend on whether there is any traumatic brain injury or post-concussional syndrome. If neither then there should be no problem at all. The opening shouldn't present any problems either. But please be sure to ask your doctor before you decide. I guess the main concerns would be if you have any kind of brain injury or lesion that is not properly healed then it could be exacerbated by jumping. If you just had a bang on the head and had concussion or loss of consciousness, and there have been no other consequences then I guess you will be okay. -
Yeah, my rigger is not willing to pack this without confirmation from PD. He hadn't noticed it the last time he packed it, so we're just a little concerned that this is the result of flying it once. Just waiting to hear from PD about this.
