  1. Pope John Paul I died 28 September 1978, after serving for only a little over a month. Pope John Paul II's Papacy began 16 October 1978. Arrive Safely John
  2. See you in three weeks, mon ami . . . Cafe Poca Cosa is calling us . . . Arrive Safely John
  3. That's what we drank when we had a little more money . . . we splurged on Genessee and left the "BEER" beer for the poor beer drinkers. Then in college it was Hamm's. Boy was that bad. Arrive Safely John
  4. I am a career US Army Parachute Rigger - 21 years worth so far. I am also on staff part time (like everyone else) at Raeford Parachute Center School., doing tandems and AFF. Happy to be here! Arrive Safely John
  5. My beer horror story was generic beer (early '80's). It was terrible, no matter how cold or what kind of container you drank it out of. It came in white cans that said "BEER" on them. Cases of it were delivered in a big vehicle that said "TRUCK" on the side. Arrive Safely John
  6. I've actually had dinner with Clay - the one and only time we've met. I found him to be quite culturally refined, despite the fact that he ate his sushi with his fingers. Arrive Safely John
  7. Dayum! I don't think I've ever seen anyone lurk that long, then pop up in the forums! Welcome and good posting! Arrive Safely John
  8. This is the infamous Scott Lutz video. It has been discussed to the point of becoming a dead horse here in the forums. Forum Search results: "Scott Lutz" Arrive Safely John
  9. At Raeford, all Instructors are given the right of refusal. It is the policy of the owners. This increases the level of safety by not forcing Instructors to puch their personal limits until they have the training and experience to expand them. Arrive Safely John
  10. Yes. I am a very large lad, and I will not jump an AFF student that is so small and light I know I will go low on them, nor will I jumps a very large tandem passenger that will dangerously overload a tandem canopy. Arrive Safely John
  11. This subject has been covered at length here in the forums. A quick search revealed many threads on the subject: "without aad" "aad or not" This one is a dead horse . . . Arrive Safely John
  12. I chew gum on occasion myself in free fall. The last thing I want a Tandem Student to remember is the onions I had on my salad for lunch as part of their experience. Regarding students, I will not let them chew gum. At the boarding area I give the student one last look from a few feet away to see if anything jumps out at me. I catch gum in students' mouths that wasn't there before all the time. I don't want their quick inhale of breath from exasperation after exit to cause them to choke on it. Arrive Safely John
  13. This is certainly personal preference. I have jumped a complete system assembled and packed, both main and reserve, with confidence because of my long history with that manufacturer. When I ordered my last complete rig, I assembled and packed it myself. I found one small blemish in the nose of the reserve, no structural integrity issues, but the manufacturer replaced it right away without hesitation. That being said, my pre-assembly inspection provided one last quality control inspection. For those of you on the fence, gather as much information as you can, then you can make an informed decision. 14. The Altimaster III (made by SSE) is no longer made, and SSE is out of business. You can still find them on eBay, and I'm fairly sure Alti-2 will service it. The manufacturing rights for the SSE line of altimeters now belongs to Alti-2, who makes an altimeter similar to the Altimaster III called the Galaxy. I heartily agree with that statement. Most of your money early on should be spent on skydives. You are on the right track buying gear though . . . start with the inexpensive stuff like altimeters, helmets, goggles, gloves, jumpsuits, etc. Have fun! Arrive Safely John
  15. Jessica is an Allman Brothers song. Album: Brothers and Sisters, 1973. Arrive Safely John
  16. Jeanne's Alti II is one of the originals made by SSE back in the day. It's made out of wood, has Roman numerals and a strap with a buckle. I have two or three altimeters on each jump as well. I wear a Neptune on my left hand and a Pro Dytter in my right ear all the time. I wear an Alti-2 Galaxy on my right wrist as well when I'm doing AFF. I have a Bonehead Mudflap mount, but I haven't tried it yet. Arrive Safely John
  17. The last word I read - I think it was in Skydiving Magazine - was that they would break ground in mid-2006. Arrive Safely John
  18. No biggie! As you can see, the lovely Skymama moved it from Intros & Greets for ya! Sidebar: the Intros & Greets forum is for just that - introducing yourself and others' welcome to the forums. It's also a perfect place to post general questions about the site or about posting in the forums. Back on my head! Arrive Safely John
  19. In the future you will want to post questions about gear in the Gear & Rigging forum - you will get more views and more responses. The Altitrack has not been released yet. I plan to demo that item when it does officially come out. I saw it at PIA Symposium in January, and there are several previous discussions about this item if you search the forums. My recommendation for you is to continue to borrow an altimeter, or buy a cheap Altimaster II on eBay until you have done your "due diligence" to figure out what you want. Arrive Safely John
