Washington Redskins. Needs to change their team name?
winsor replied to stayhigh's topic in Speakers Corner
"Your Honor, I want to change my name." "Well, this is a very serious matter, and you had better have a very good reason before the Court will consider you request. What is your name?" "Joe Shit." "My goodness, we will certainly change your name! What is the name you wish?" "Fred Shit." Anyhow, there were some guys with whom I worked in Switzerland that ran a night spot by the name of the 'Dago Bar.' It had no negative connotations for them. The biggest use of seemingly derogatory epithets I have witnessed has been self-identified. 'Faggot,' 'nigger,' 'spic,' 'beaner,' etc. have been bandied back and forth in my presence, to and from people that fit the description. 'Nigger,' FWIW, is simply a variant of a word meaning 'black,' but its context has made its rather benign etymology moot. Most other epithets have similarly mild origins. As far as 'Redskins' goes, I don't even know offhand what sport is involved, and thus don't really care one way or another. BSBD, Winsor -

And you wonder why people have made up their mind about you? Burn, baby, burn. -
How do you know David Blaine isn't Jesus who figured out how to travel forward in time? Traveling forward in time is easy. I do it routinely. It's traveling backward that's tough

That's their prerogative, but they should take care to consider how packs of rabid animals are treated, and that the authorities have the means to do so. In any event, this case goes a long way toward validating my support of surveillance video. If the cop had a dash cam as well as a lapel camera running continuously, there would be no discussion regarding quite what occurred and what did not. If the cop's behavior was right out of Adam 12, having video would serve to exonerate him. Without it, however, he is guaranteed to be subject to endless variations of one account or another, to the extent that the truth becomes of minor importance. Having been burned once by failing to have a camera running, every vehicle in my household now has video running the moment it is started. In addition, there is continuous video monitoring throughout my home. Given the forensics that have been provided by both sides, I am inclined to accept the officer's version of events. Then there will always be people who surmise that the poor, innocent teen was shot repeatedly by a policeman who had just dropped his white robe at the cleaner, and who broke his orbital bones when he tripped on an empty shell casing while dancing triumphantly over the body of his victim. It is always easier to counter nonsense by saying 'roll tape' than to counter drivel with clear logic. Video equipment would be a better investment than all the cool army surplus they are getting. I wasn't comparing packing granny to mistake making skydiver. Yes you were. No-one claims that they skydive to make themselves safer. Nevertheless, I have heard people claim that the drive to the airport is safer than the skydive. If that is the case, they are a world-class bad driver.

Clueless How much of a media circus would the generals family have been subjected to had he attended? How about letting them morn in peace. Another damned if he does, damned if he doesn't and the fringe Tea Baggery continues. And you're busting my balls for spelling? Fair enough. -
News flash - the problem is population. All this horseshit about Climate Change is, if anything, reflections upon one of many symptoms of the core issue. Anyone who chooses to perseverate upon something so definitively secondary is a fucking idiot. I give you Al Gore as a prime example. BSBD, Winsor If you are going to try to dazzle us with your brilliance.. Ok, it's a term I picked up from a PhD in the Very Soft Sciences, in whose Department it was used extensively. Given the definition provided, it fits nicely (particularly when spelled correctly) . So what if the source was bogus?

Please take 2 minutes to legalize cannabis in Europe!
winsor replied to MisterCrash's topic in Speakers Corner
A) I support legalizing anything that is not worse than ethanol or tobacco (which is pretty much everything). B) I do not take drugs, smoke or drink. C) Though Jesus was a distant cousin, he is just one more family member. D) Everything you claim is demonstrably false. -
Evolution is not a law. It is a theory. A study of the Scripture in both the Hebrew and the Christian writings lead to the understanding that God had a pre-defined goal. Well, evolution of man (how we got from single celled organisms in the primordial ooze to man and all the other species on earth) is a theory. It can not move beyond that because the steps in the process cannot be tested repeatedly to prove it scientifically. But evolution as a process is proven. Scientifically proven. Tested repeatedly. It has laws that are followed (within the statistical probabilities). Creationists often dismiss the process of evolution as "microevolution." But if you apply "microevolution" over millions and millions of years, you get... The evolution of man and the rest of the species on earth. Ha! I got you there! Evolution CAN'T be true since the universe is only 5774 years old! It is clearly documented that Adam was created knowing how to count and understood the significance of keeping tabs on his age, and passed on this knowledge to all his offspring. If it is written, it HAS to be true. You know, just like the internet. BSBD, Winsor

I'm cool with being routinely tested for employment, insurance and so forth, but I don't smoke, drink or take anything that warns against driving or using machinery (undergoing surgery was an exception), so I have no dog in this fight one way or another. Anyhow, it always tore me up that someone with a martini in one hand and a Marlboro in the other saw fit to pontificate on the evils of proscribed drugs (that was in the late '60s, but what the hell). Right. BSBD, Winsor

Too many poor people are in a bad financial situation because they lack the training to earn a decent living and don't have a family background which lets them believe they can overcome that. Some make a rational choice to commit crimes. For historical reasons a disproportionate fraction of those people are black. Rather a pity that Eugenics was given such a bad name in the '30s. -

Hope is a lousy foreign policy John. Once again you guys are hiding behind W. FACT: G.W. Bush was the CinC who ordered the invasion of Iraq. FACT: the justification was simply a lie. FACT: Bush appointed Bremer, who then royally fucked up the aftermath. FACT: the mess in Iraq is 100% the fault of Bush and his neo-con cronies. FWIW, compared to the people he was so effectively oppressing, Saddam Hussein was a real bargain. Only an idiot would have supported his overthrow.

You could always listen to those who are not doing it. They live in the 'burbs and write letters to the editor when they feel disenfranchised. Deal with it. -
For a variety of reasons I am a huge fan of video monitoring of ALL law enforcement activities. If a cop is on the up and up, it is entirely to his benefit. If a cop wishes to have a customized account of events, there is a dispassionate record that limits prevarication. Under oath law enforcement gets a pass. In theory they are subject to draconian sanctions for perjury, in practice not so much. BSBD, Winsor

How do you tell the nonviolent civilians from the fighters? And, since Gaza is the most densely populated place on the planet, it's really not practical to evacuate all 22 million of them. It's more like 1.2 million, and more than that commute in and out of New York daily. Move them out and turn the place into a parking lot.
