  1. Hi All, I was hoping I'd pick everyones brains as I've recently done my first Tandem and i'm looking at routes into this sport. I have a million and one questions and I can source SOME of the info myself, but I'm struggling with the stuff below. I'm within reach of Peterlee and Durham Tees Valley so I'm really lucky to have those options. Money looks like it's going to be the major drawback for me. The costs seem to spiral the more I look into skydiving as anything other than a one-off. :suprised: * How much (on average) does your own rig cost to buy? And as a follow up - what do you need your rig to be? (for example: a main and reserve, AAD - can they be bought separately or would I need a complete rig) I've found loads of stuff online but the jargon is hard to sift through and reliable advice even harder. I'm not sure if I'm looking at JUST the top end complete package rigs when I'm seeing £3000 - £5000 price tags or is that the usual types of cost?. * I've seen a few forums that mention buying a used rig is a good idea for newbies - how do you know where is going to be a reputable place/person is to buy from?. Can you buy direct from a DZ?. * How long will a rig be classed as "new enough" before it needs to be replaced?. * What equipment is classed as essential to own? (Rig, Helmet, altimeter, jump suit etc etc). Can you rent this and other equipment from any/most DZ's? *I'm a bit confused by RAPS vs. AFF. I've been told that RAPS Is supposed to be cheaper but not from the costs I've seen. What is considered the best option?. Does RAPS take you through all of the free fall stuff (tracking etc) that the AFF covers?. * I've seen AFF courses can be completed in a weekend (weather permitting), but how long does it take for a complete RAPS course?. * At what stage are you classed as being able to roll into any DZ and jump by yourself?. * Prices per jump - what is considered the norm? - does this tend to increase often (like a yearly increase)?. As a follow up to that how far in advance are you usually required to book a jump - if you need to book a slot at all?. * On average how often do most people jump once they've done an AFF or RAPS course?. Sorry for the multiple questions, I hope it's not rambling and that someone might be able to offer the advice I need. Cheers Newbie-want-to-be-a-jumper.
