  1. I cropped the picture out of an article written by Carl describing his dreams of becoming an astronaut, his comparison of base jumpers and astronauts, and his early experiences building ham radios. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  2. You've won the prize. It's Carl at the age of 15. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  3. A hint: his first name starts with the letter C. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  4. Can you guess who this well known jumper is? You'll be surprised. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    vent/no vent mod...

Too unreliable and notoriously stiff and bulky. BASE manufacturers stopped using the sail insertion mesh slider years ago for the same reason. Consider just putting a sail slider (possibly with a hole in it) on the canopy instead of using a mesh slider. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Still alive

Glad to see you're still kicking and trippin. Get your butt to a safer place than the volatile middle east. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  7. So what. I like cute chicks. Unfortunately, they can get into base so easily that most of them get hurt. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  8. This is synomamous with terrorism. Homeland security, FBI, etc will most likely respond with increased security at many good sites. Communications are considered critical infrastructure. I've encountered the fed's before when there was a rash of tower tampering locally. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  9. Hang in there Calvin. You'll be back up in no time. Have fun with the strippers too. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Himalaya BASE

That and hypoxia. Nic always almost always did perfect exits. Watch the video carefully... Nic goes into a full body extension and doesn't recover. Thin air, exhaustion, and hypoxia seem like the most probably candidates for screwing up the freefall. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  11. I had a difficult time interpreting this document. The freepack is essentially dealing with a real beast. This is one reason Mark Hewitt (BASE 46) developed sleeve technology. Freepacks have a place and can be mastered though. There are a few points that everyone should be reminded of... 1) The canopy can be torqued (turned) during the way to line stretch, which can be influenced or minimized through packing techniques, such as 45 degree folding the stabilizers similar to a round reserve, and minimizing the exposure of the nose. 2) The canopy will tend to open down wind (or upwind) like a windsock during the inflation sequence. 3) The faster the opening, the more on heading it will be, with jumper body position being much more critical in the opening sequence. 4) Pilot chutes are now known to be critical in the on-heading performance of the canopy. Asymmetries in pilot chute manufacture, tapes relative to the block or bias, and attachment of the bridle to the pilot chute play a critical role in the system. 5) Pilot chute inflation should be staged. Inflation immediately upon (sideways) toss may result in an off heading opening. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
  12. Hey Space It would be great if you could explain the ORA winds and the dynamic winds. This has always been a point of confusion for me. thanks, Chris Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Himalaya BASE

It was thin air (~21000 feet) that led to their out of control tumbling. Nic is now an overweight motivational speaker. Nic and Glenn were the fifth group to ever ascend T.T. Earl Redfern led a new route on T.T. and is credited with it. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    Age and BASE

Years ago, most BASE jumpers started in their 30's or 40's. There were very few mentors so most were self taught. This could only happen by being an experienced skydiver. Now people are much much younger who start BASE since there is a clear and easy progression. I guess I'm an exception. I started at age 20 in 1992. 17. Nick, good to see you posting again. Have you thought about one of those automated answering machines for Apex to alleviate you from answering the same frustrating questions over and over? Something like "Press 1 for direct bags. Press 2 for pin rigs. Press 3 for expeditions. [beep 1]. Direct bags. Listen carefully for some things in this menu have changed. Press 1 for basic direct bag information. Press 2 for direct bag packing instructions. Press 3 for directions on how to ..." 18. It's very critical in the direct bag system that the holder not let the bag fall through the lines or twist the bag during extraction. The system is very good but it requires some attention to detail, as Cornishe describes. Simulate with your bag holder the removal of the bag from the container and everything else while on the ground so you are not haunted on the exit point by either fear, uncertainty, or anything else while you are on the ground. 19. The Dbag: invented by Mark Hewitt, BASE 46. It results in the most on-heading, reliable, and quickest opening possible, aka, instant parachute, just add air, provided your bag holder doesn't screw anything up. Choose your bag holder well. Tie your bag to something in case your bag holder drops it. Better yet, tie each handle to something on each side in case your bag holder drops one side, which would result in a bad off-heading opening. 20. What kind of video camera did you use? The resolution, colors, and overall video quality is exceedingly good. thanks, Chris Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    slider

Perhaps he should leave the slider off for the B tonight. B's are notoriously more difficult than other objects, except for cliffs in some cases. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

    slider

For slider down, secure the front of the slider to the risers, not the rear of the slider to the risers. Securing the slider is done to prevent it from riding back up the lines. The rear of the slider is not secured because that will affect your ability to steer the canopy properly using risers. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174

  24. BJ Worth's jump from 300 feet above the hole was actually quite a bit more demanding than jumping from the edge. Mark Hewitt, BASE 46, as far as I know was the first to jump from the edge. The cave has been closed to future jumping as dictated by the Mexican government. Looks like a death sandwich without the bread - Steve Deadman Morrell, BASE 174
