  1. Wow. 340? If that's true, it's no wonder he backed up. Glad he's ok, that's some pretty serious shit! At least some one brought him some snacks. Hunger really increases when running for your life. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto
  2. The line twists aren't because of the canopy, but that's besides the point. Question for you. What model Cobalt are you jumping? Several people at our dz jump them and really like em. They are 105's on up to like 150? Any way, None of those are the Competition models. I'm curious as to whether the Comp and the Regular cobalt's openings have been found to be very different. 3. OH yes... I have many jumps on a Jedei as well, Loved the openings. didn't care for the flight characteristics of that model. (many years ago). Brian makes a kick ass parachute so I'm going to sereiously explore his productsl. C-ya My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto
  4. Thanks Phreezone Believe me, I've performed all that and more. Packing is not a mystery to me at all. Near the end, the openings became reasonable (note i did not say good near the end, only reasonable). However, it's of my opinion that having to open at a certain fallrate, a certain body position and don't even think of breathing at the time, is not a good feature. I plan to skydive until I'm physically not capable of doing it any more so I'd like to extend that time as much as possible. Thanks again. 5. The stiletto flies really nicely and every last one of them I've jumped opens comfortable and predictable.....(minus the occassional "I'ts a parachute, all parts move, it's bound to open like that now and then" type openings)... Ive only jumped the Competition model. After around 50 jumps I couldn't take it any more. If the openings were consistant, or shall I say, comfortable and consistant, a competition model would be in my container. They fly great. I know nothing about the regular cobalts or anything larger than a 65. Edit: In all fairness, I plan to demo another Cobalt Comp model this year. It flew so well it's worth another try. 9. This was originated a LONG time ago by belly fliers We'll use 6 people as an example: First get 6 skydivers: Jump out of the plane 3 form a round the next 3 fill in the gaps, leg or harness grip on the people to each side. Pod? On a count the out side peope just flip their feet under to the middle. Now to make it even more fun, The inside 3 do the same, so every one is upside down. Edit: I don't recall which production video, one of Mike Mc Gowans I believe) there is a Great sequence of the Golden Knights 8 way team doing this. Think about it, they got paid for that :) My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

  13. You know the type 3 Bumpers on raven reserves? Before those came out I made something similar out of 1 inch type 4. 1 inch type 4.. about 4 to 5 inches. (adjust this length to suit your needs or ease of handling) Fold back the ends about 1/4 inch Zig zag over the raw edges Fold the piece in half (raw edges to the outside) and sew the edges together. . Start the Stitch under the 1/4 inch folds and leave a fairly large opening at the folded end for the link. Does that makes sense? I can draw up in Paint later tonight if a diagram is needed but it's pretty straight forward. I'll look at mine when I get home I may have folded the piece in half and butterflyed it prior to Stitching the sides together. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... 16. No it doesn't Slinks are stronger and will not inadvertantly be loaded incorrectly. Imo the slider should not pass the links untill you pull it down. However, that should be a simple feat. Bumpers I use can be used on slinks or Rapides. They allow the action of pulling the slider down to be a simple non tedious task. 18. I understand why it would be nice to have bumpers. People tend to reach up and grab risers, and occasionally get smaked with the slider grommet. Or it will (depending on design) unstow a toggle sometimes. I can make cloth bumpers that take care of that problem and still allow the slider to come down easily. 19. Quote. I don't have the experience to tell you why metal would be better, reply] There is a possibility the plastic ones can be crushed. It's not likely but possible. If you read My overly worded lengthy Post in talk back Poll: Reserve: repack or pencil? I believe that inserts MAY have helped. But given the conditions of the risers and the type of channel it's tough to say. I am finally inserting metal ones when I get home tonight My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto
  20. Long read but there's a moral to this. When I trained in Freeflying, I used 2 rigs, one on every other load. My buddy had 3 rigs one he left in the cabinet unless he REALLY needed it. I needed a 3rd rig on one occasion (Edit: Or shall I say, I wanted to make the next load) so I borrowed his backup. Near the bottom end of the dive, we did and over under and I tracked off on my back. The toggle hit me in the helmut so I rolled over and thought. * this might suck* The cameraman saw this so he hung out to watch. The toggle was out so I thought that MAYBE I could clear the other brake on opening and deal with it. Pulled, It flung me into linetwists before I could do any thing. It pinned my head down and it was spiraling Hard. * at least it was a good view of the handles* One hand on each handle, peeled cutaway and *Fuck* both hands on cutaway pushing hard... *FUCK*....now I'm really serious. Pushed with all my strength to the point where it was painfull. it released. As I flung away from the main and grabbed the reserve handle, I thought *I'm the rigger for the owner of this rig, when was the last time I've seen this*... yep that's when it first registered that the rig hasn't been serviced in a while.... Pulled the reserve and it opened fine. After gathering every thing we were back on track with our regular rigs. Now for some details and the point of the whole story. This rig has had 2 owners and both owners have successfully and easily cutaway from a spinner a few times. The top keeper was missing on the riser. With out it, the velcroless toggle is bound to release prematurely. It was a Talon with soft housing and a plastic channel in the back. Integrity risers which under a load has less mechanical advantage than regular risers. .............. I don't know if the cutaway cables were trapped in the riser twist, I tried to simulat this on the ground but could not do so. Since I didn't realize it right away I jumped the rig. I looked at the data card and found it was 2 years and 2 months out of date. The cutaway handle was never pulled out during the whole 2 years. The toggle keeper? I don't know when that was torn off. I don't work on mains unless asked too but I do like to see the risers at every repack. A few things, Had I looked to see if the rig was in date I would have just missed the load. Taken it with me and packed it up and found the toggle keeper. After this event, I Re-re-re-explained the importance of removing the cutaway handle cleaning it, flexing the risers and reassebling it. We always did it on our regular rigs. But it didn't even come to my mind that this rig hadn't been touched much for the past 2 years. --------- The parachute worked proving that leaving it packed for a 2 and 1/2 years total, still works. The battery on the cypres was out of date but it indcated 6320 during the countdown. However, no maintainance on the rig and a some complacency of not looking or asking when it's been repacked, could have easily cost me my life. I pulled muscles pulling the cutaway I didn't have much time left before there would have been no choice but to pull the reserve and hope for the best. I would have spiralled down right in front of the hangar and spectators causing all kinds of grief. -------- Go ahead and pencil it. It's not always quite that drastic =8^) *Maintain your equipment.
