Think it'll make a comeback thanks to the new and improved "pit"? NWS Pic. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode.

"Guys...read the damned caption with the pic" Duh!!! I did. I also downloaded the high resolution pic and had a good look at it. I'm still trying to resolve star tracks with a stationary moon, still clouds throughout the pic, and a well defined reflection on the water. Do you get many single lightning flash storms? That's why I wondered if he could just stop an exposure when he felt like it? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Yeah, looking closely at the pic I'm now a bit confused. It's captioned as a digital image captured by an amateur astronomer. At first I thought it'd been taken from an aircraft, but I now see it was taken from the ground. The exposure was long enough for stars to wisibly track. Yet the moon and the clouds don't move, and only one lightning flash appeared on the pic from what appears to be a VERY localised storm. I have to admit I'm not into digital photography - still firmly wedded to film and Canon FD lenses (yeah, so I'm a dinosaur. Deal with it!). How much "latitude" do you have with long exposure and small aperture settings on digital compared to film? Could he have just decided to stop the exposure whenever he wanted to? And of course, how much manipulation could he do to the image? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Exactly. He lost. Which Iraqis are trying him? It wouldn't be the ones who're taking over from the Coalition Administration - you know, the Interim Government? Or will it be the new, independent, Iraqi Government. The one that'll emerge from the elections which are only going to be held in "stable" parts of Iraq (those firmly under Coalition control)? Let's be blunt. Iraq is not a country. Iraq is a set of lines drawn by America and Britain post WWI in the break up of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Without regard for the ethnicity of the people living there. This was done AFTER deliberately raising the Arab, Jewish and Iranian ethnic and national identities during WWI to gain allies against Germany and Austro-Hungary. The net result is that Iraq is in fact composed of bits of 3 seperate ethnic identities, all of whom were set at each other's throats during WWI (or did you think Lawrence of Arabia et al just spent their time out there racing against trains and stuff...?) So, having raised ethnic identities, and caused ethnic divides and violence, Britain and America drew "lines in the sand" through the middle of those ethnic hatreds... And wonder of wonders!!!! there is a problem in the region. More importantly there is a problem in the region which we depend upon to fuel our western civilisation! In striving for a "Middle-East Balance" for eighty years, we have created a "Middle-East Problem" which may well take another 80 years to fix. Of course, the oil will be gone by then so we can maybe just ignore the region. Or am I just being cynical. (that's a rhetorical question). Mike. Saddam must be held in custody. He is guilty of the only act that really matters... Losing a war against the US. Thus the US will keep to it's long held tradition of abuse and lack of justice toward those who it defeats! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. "67mph in the fast lane" What "fast" lane? Surely, whatever country you're in, the nearside lane (Right lane for US, Left lane for UK) is the "driving" lane, and the offside lane(s) are "overtaking" lane(s). Regardless of the speed You're driving at, you drive in the nearside lane, and use the offside lanes to overtake vehicles in the nearside lane. Anything else comes from arrogance that nothing will be driving fater than you, or feeble excuses in an attempt to defend your inadequate driving? Mike. Caught it on BBC News 24 last night. I was very impressed with Cheney, he answered the questions and stuck to the point. Edwards seemed to spend his time attacking the Bush Administration and answering the question he'd wanted asked rather than the one that WAS asked. This bodes ill for a Kerry / Edwards administration. It seems like they'll cover any mistakes they make or any awkward questions by either blaming the previous administration or by being evasive. While there's times when Bush can't answer a question, At least he comes across as far more honest. Kerry & Edwards come across as very slick liars. Mike. Is it possible to convince anyone of anything here?
miked10270 replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
I Speedy, I'd say yes. I have my own opinions, which have been formed over the years partly by listening to others. I may not agree with you (or for that matter some other folk here), but I WILL listen to you, and I WILL defend your right to voice your opinions. Mike. Perhaps I'm lucky. Then again my kids go to the local Catholic School (despite me not being a Catholic - but there's the whole "No Religious Discrimination" thing for you). Anyway, there's a seriously strict dress code. It revolves around black shoes, black / navy / dark grey trousers or skirts(below the knee), black / grey / navy sweater, white shirt blouse, & School tie. Blazers are optional (as are the skirts for the boys). Jeans, trainers, and designer labels are not accepted and will result in a phone call to the parents (yes, they INSIST on contact numbers) for a "one-off" explanation, and the child being removed from the school (Mom, Dad, Contact, come and get little XXXX and take her home) for continuous infraction. "Modified wearing" is also not tolerated. Ties are NOT belts. Trousers are NOT "dropped". Skirts are NOT rolled up at the waistband so the hem sits at the crotch (again, especially the boys). Parents go into this with their eyes open. We are expected to work with the school to ensure adequate discipline, including the "dress code". We are expected to liase with the school staff first and then present a united front to the child. If the parent doesn't like this then they are of course free to place their child(ren) in another school. Then again, we do live in a "Goddamn Commie Socialist Country" where parents on low incomes automatically get a grant toward their kids' school clothing... And the cheapest place to get the clothing is Asda (Walmart). The (annual) grant is enough to get the kids a pair of quality shoes, a tie, a sweater, a pair of trousers / skirt, and 4 shirts / blouses. The dress code is loosened for sports kit - (almost) anything goes. The net result is a higher level of school discipline, and you can't really tell the "have"s from the "have not"s. Isn't living in a "Socialist" state wonderful! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Belief that the end justifies the means has been the cause of misery, injustice and suffering throughout history. The Spanish Inquisitors believed that they were right too. Your comparison is not very accurate. Hmmm... Insert the Hermann Goering Quote here for why EITHER side fought the Vietnam War. It was never a good reason, but it sufficed. Mike. It's strange how a truly profound saying can be masked and ignored because of the person saying it. Like... Reichs Marshall Herman Goering? 18th April 1946, talking to a psychologist in his cell: Goering's observations that the common people can always be manipulated into supporting and fighting wars by their political leaders: We got around to the subject of war again and I said that, contrary to his attitude, I did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction. "Why, of course, the people don't want war," Goering shrugged. "Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship." "There is one difference," (the interviewer) pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars." "Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. It works the same way in any country." just look at Bush, Blair, Al-Sadr, etc... Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Presented as Satire... SO LAUGH AT IT!!! Mike. World Peace is Declared- George Bush Totally Pissed Off. In a completely unexpected turn of events World Peace was declared this morning, signaling the end of all violence and murder planet wide. The announcement was made by Festus P. Hymen of Billings, Montana as he ate breakfast in the Duck Inn Cafe and Bait Shop. It may be remembered that Mr. Hymen was the original author of the World Peace Movement; six months ago, as he was he was reading the paper in Lu Lu’s Lox of Bagels, Mr. Hymen was heard to exclaim, “Jesus Christ on a Crutch, why can we all just learn to get along?” It was one of those moments that change the course of history, but it began slowly at first. Mary Ellen Mountjoy, who was sitting near Mr. Hymen responded, “You know Festus, you got yourself a point there. Why are we all fighting everywhere? It’s just gotta stop.” News of the exchange spread and one by one the residents of first Greater Metropolitan Billings, then all of Montana endorsed the movement. By the end of May all of the American Western States were on board and now it finally seems that everyone on the entire planet has signed on. Well, almost everyone. President George W. Bush has expressed outrage and dismay that World Peace has been declared. Unnamed White House Source Wegman (Pudgy) Waterhouse, speaking on the condition of anonymity said, “ Man, when we first heard the news I thought that Bush would have a coronary. He started screaming at the TV ‘What the hell do they mean, Peace? No more wars, no more hatred? That’s crazy! What am I gonna tell the American People? If they think they’re all safe then they won’t need me to protect them! I’m screwed!’. I tried to tell him that he still could point to his accomplishments in the economy, education and the environment but he just started crying.” Speaking on the condition of even more anonymity Waterhouse continued, “ I gotta admit, I’ve got mixed feelings about this World Peace thing. I mean sure, on the one hand it sounds great...no one gets bombed or shot or anything but think about it; this could ruin the entire fabric of our society. Since 1990 the United States has shipped more than $152 billion dollars in guns, planes, tanks and other weapons around the world. Do you know what kind of hit our economy would take if all that stopped? That’s over $10 billion a year we lose in sales, mostly from companies we in the Administration own stock in. This is really gonna hurt our bottom line.” Virgin's Branson Announces Plans for Private Spaceflight. Sir Richard Branson: Virgin Space Pioneer Sir Richard Branson announced that he would launch “Virgin Galactic”—an effort to build five space ships that will fly as high as 80 miles above earth. With seating for 5 passengers and a flight time of 3 hours, Sir Branson has hit upon a really terrific plan for wasting huge amounts of fuel and resources for those people capable of ponying up the expected $200,000 airfare. At Virgin corporate headquarters, the switchboard lit up soon after the announcement. Paris Hilton phoned in and asked if passengers would be allowed to do anything they wanted during the 3-hour flight. She then bought a pair of tickets and a new video camcorder. “I hope to be the first person to make love in space…” Madonna phoned wanting to know if only virgins would be considered for the galactic space flights. When told of the company policy, she decided she would buy a ticket under her new identity of the week. It is rumored that Madonna is considering becoming a virgin once again and is looking for a surgeon who is up to the task. Michael Moore was told that he would be required to purchase two tickets if he wanted to be lifted into space. “I think that is very unfair,” said Mr. Moore, “I’m going to film a documentary on all the unfair treatment that large people are subjected to in space travel. A reporter asked Sir Branson if he would be on the first flight. “Oh, heavens no! It’s much too dangerous for me. I barely got out of that balloon thing alive. Besides, I’ve got so many things going on right now with this space thing, and I’m also getting into online music. Virgin’s “Digital Megastore” is going to give Apple a run for its money. Next week I’m going to be announcing a cure for a very well known fatal disease. Later in the month our Virgin Airlines will begin flights from the North Pole to the South Pole. Life has been very exciting for me. I want to be the first man to circle the earth on a pogo stick. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Hi Andrea, If you have Spybot, and I'm guessing it's up to date (16th Sept 2004), then have you "immunized"? Also, you should have Javacool's "SpyWareBlaster" installed, up to date (27th Sept 2004). I wonder if the "Bonus Army", American men who fought in France in WW I would agree when (then Major) Patton's cavalry charged them with drawn sabres. Interestingly, one of the men of the Bonus Army killed had actually saved Patton's life in France.... No good deed goes unpunished? Mike. "There are three reasons why we are fighting this war. The first is because we are determined to preserve our traditional liberties. Some crazy bastards decided they were supermen and that it was their holy mission to rule the world. They've been pushing people around all over the world, looting, killing, and abusing innocent men, women, and children. They were getting set to do the same thing to us. We had to fight to prevent being subjugated. The second reason we are fighting is to defeat and wipe out the folks who started all this goddamned son-of-bitchery. They didn't think we could or would fight, and they weren't the only ones who thought that, either. There are certain people back home who had the same idea. Both were wrong." I love this. From the man who opened fire on an encampment of ex WW I soldiers because they were unemployed and living in tents. A man who'd assault his subordinates.... I suspect that Paton's main objection to the Nazi regime was that he felt they were taking HIS job from him! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. "....a U boat enroute to Japan with German nuclear secrets and some form of uranium..." U-234, a modified type XB, commanded by Johann 'Hein' Fehler. It surrendered to the USS Sutton on 14th May 1945. U-234 was "rumoured to have been carrying" a complete nuclear weapons delivery system: Enriched Uranium, a fusing expert, and a jet bomber. Matters have not been helped by the US Government's continued failure / refusal to fully open it's U-234 Archives, and in particular the cargo inventory which is still known to be incomplete. Add to that the strange fates and behaviour of certain of the crew (disappearances, fast grants of citizenship, etc...) and you have a very good going conspiracy theory. Mike.
