Are you sure it all happened during opening? Is it possible it gradually slipped during the jump? Those are very different scenarios, with different causes. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

Interesting. I await comment from the Great Bearded One. Generally in a new design one should ask "What problem does it solve?" -- Jeff My Skydiving History

My sense is that the statistics won't support that fear -- by a wide margin. Most swoopers are their own worst enemy. Solo femurs are far more common than collisions. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

He probably means these sunglasses... http://www.opticsplanet.net/wileyx-sunglasses-xl-1.html Edit: Buy other stuff than expensive shades first. Altimeters, jumpsuit... -- Jeff My Skydiving History

Looks like a funnel about to happen. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

generally speaking, yes, but the real answer to your question is at your DZ. Talk to them, and they'll hook you up. Some DZ's require a small number of tandems, which isn't wrong, just different. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

This thread suggests to me that we need similar "How to's" for a variety of topics 1. How to swoop 2. How to pack 3. How to inspect your rig 4. How to treat your rig 5. How to spot 6. How to finance your skydiving habit Since I am LEAST qualified to swoop, I should start that one How to Swoop 1. Pull down really hard on either toggle 2. When your vision goes release the toggle 3. Prior to impact pull both toggles down 4. Drag your knees on the ground until you stop 5. For advanced swooping, extra points awarded for multiple front loops after touchdown. 6. Yell at other jumpers who got in your way. 7. Give instructions on swooping to people with 6 jumps. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

At my most recent regular DZ we cared more about turbulence, which at that DZ is related to wind direction, as well as gustiness. For most skydivers it is really an issue of turbulence, although it is hard to imagine a high gustiness factor that didn't include turbulence. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

Yeah, like the 35 loads I've seen and been on that were consistently shitty spots. I've been there at Z-Hills, Lake Wales, and elsewhere, landed off several loads in a row (along with many others) and been told to fuck off by manifest. Happened at both the aforementioned places in the last 3 years. The first off landing is because I trusted the pilot. Landing off on subsequent loads was a mix of hoping the pilot had his act together and succumbing to the screams of "go, go, go..." from those in the back of the load (I know, my fault, in part). All of these were RW groups exiting first, and certainly not the first, last, or only loads of the day. So don't tell me that the pilot is OK just because he's done it before. The last one, at Z-hills we put up with people screaming at us for 30 seconds before we exited, and we still couldn't make the airport -- They did. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

The effect varies. An extreme case is where the brakes are not set at all. For some canopies it results in very long snivel, and in others it results in very hard openings. Are you tempted to change your settings? If so, why? The very best source of info will be the manufacturer, who, presumably, has experimented with the settings. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

I think if you had two otherwise identical mains that the F-111 one would pack smaller. However, I am not aware that you could find two canopies that fit that restriction, and other factors will weigh heavily on the final bulk issue. Even two identical ZP canopies of the same model and size built by the same people can vary several percent in volume. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

What is the most popular color and size for a kill line pilotchute??
darkwing replied to snivel1's topic in Gear and Rigging
If you buy a vector, the standard sizes are 27" (ZP) and 32" (F-111) If you have a very large or very small canopy you may want something smaller or larger. It does make a difference. -- Jeff My Skydiving History -
Hey, it is all about the fun. It is important you have a fast faller holding the potato, and make sure people know the protocol you are useing -- plan the dive, dive the plan. One person is allowed at a time, line up , after you put your piece on, go to one side and make a formation... Stay safe. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

We should have some more info from you. The question might better be "is this a good price for you?" Please tell us your weight, and what main canopy the rig will hold. What year were the Talon, reserve, and cypres manufactured? One red flag of warning that I can see here is a beginner with a 143 reserve... -- Jeff My Skydiving History

ahhh grasshopper, what a bummer. I hope you get it sorted out, but I am not optimistic. Next time get some advice on buying gear via the net. It can work out fine. Please keep us posted. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

COngrats. Just a word of caution though, in the festive atmosphere of trick exits and skydives, don't forget to watch out for your handles!!! -- Jeff My Skydiving History

Danger... It is possible to have new outboard lines be too long, such that the slider stops are above the inboard line attachments... -- Jeff My Skydiving History

I think the chances are very, very slim (but not zero). I think that in all the world there have been maybe two bird strikes in the history of skydiving. I am not counting the time my teammated got bird-pooped in the air. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

need to give packing/gear maint. seminar tomorrow, need input
darkwing replied to payback462's topic in Gear and Rigging
If the rings themselves have become elongated, this is a VERY serious issue. It is certainly not due to never having been turned as part of routine maintenance. DO NOT JUMP THEM. Have the entire rig, and risers inspected carefully. -- Jeff My Skydiving History -
My very strong advice, as a college club advisor... Do not use the words beer, or alcohol anywhere except to prohibit them. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

I believe it is a huge, Huge, HUGE mistake to make students pay for any aspect of a cutaway. One thing I do not want is a student weighing the econonomics of cutting away, as part of their emergency procedures. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

Many of those photos must have been taken in the southern hemisphere. But they are good photos. And, dang, those guys are old. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

It is because of this that I cannot consider another source for my audibles... -- Jeff My Skydiving History

I think the DZO is nuts. If malfunctions are rare, then you can just chalk the charges up to the cost of doing business. I assume he will only charge you for the pack job on the reserve? If he wants to charge you for damage and/or loss of the main and reserve also, I'd say take a hike. I see a widespread tendency to always blame the pack job for malfunctions. My not too ignorant estimate of the fraction that are actually caused by packing is about 10%. Malfunctions happen. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
