I do not agree completely. I'm finishing up my undergrad; I've taken all the Diff-EQ, Complex, and Boundary Value Problems mumbo jumbo, and I just don't understand why you have to memorize so much. True, I think memorizing fundementals like the quadratic, unit circle, and a few handy rules for derivative/integrals and such will prove useful in later math courses. I don't think there is a problem with memorizing a fundemental equation like the quadratic. If we had to derive something like a quadratic, or even trig differentials every time during an exam, we would take a lot longer than a 50 minute class period to take the exam. As long as you have seen it and understand where it comes from and know how to apply it, then use it and move on, but remember that to apply it to the next level of math you choose to pursue. As for memorization-- fundementals like this should be memorized, but IMO, when you get to higher math or higher math that you use inside an enginnering class, you should be able to have any equation needed for reference given to you. I waste more time remembering formulas and equations then I do knowing how to apply them and knowing how to apply them to real life things I might see in my field. When it all comes down to it, when I have my grown up job (as I like to call it), I will always have a book on my desk to get the equations I need out of it to use for whatever I'm doing in my field. My employer is not going to care if I can remember more equations than anybody else on the planet, but if I have not a clue in hell on how to apply them, then I'm screwed. LisaM... best advice is to make friends with another person in class and do the homework together. It takes me a while to get things in my maths, so I make sure to get my butt in the prof's office once or twice a week and to get that study buddy who will be there to help ya out. It's gotten me through math hell for that past four years. Sorry for the rant, but this gets under my skin when it comes to math-- at least in my case. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Clayton High School, 2002 (a shit-hole of a school, I might add) Clayton, New Jersey (You guys would know it as a few miles from CrossKeys...I think I was absent most of my senior year when I was doing AFF there. hahah ) Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

hahaha.....sounds a lot like me, which is why I have 125 jumps in about 3 active years in the sport, but five total counting two off when I started college. I turned 18 in October of my senior year of highschool and starting jumping then, doing one AFF jump once a month when I could afford. When I got to college I quit for two years because of money and all that jazz, but then scored an extra loan in my last two years and used financial aid to fund a rig and a few jumps every once in a while. Thank god I'm graduating next semester, but I'll have to repay all of this eventually--- but at least I got to jump the last year. You'll find a way to work it out. If you are in college, look into borrowing extra money. That's how a lot of kids that I know do it. Good luck! Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

He was probably too busy playing with himself in his tent-- being away from his girlfriend and all. I'm sure he'll have them up after he does some work on them at home. In the mean time-- no toilet whirlies, please! I usually don't poke my nose in on a reply in here, but I just couldn't resist. Hope you guys are having fun!! Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Hmmm....chianti??? Ruffino or Ruffino reserve is a decent not too expensive chianti. As for merlot-- man, there's so many! Depends on where you want the merlot to come from.....if you want to go inexpensive, but smooth, try smoking loon. I just had that stuff the other day and it's pretty good. But personally, I'm a yellow tail fan (esp. shiraz) all around. good luck! Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

These really aren't much in the form of "sickest freefly" photo, but the FL coast and clouds are pretty to look at.

Cool temperature in the room, maybe low 70's, and curled up with my handsome in our "pretzel" position. I never liked falling asleep with anybody before, but I LOVE being curled up with him! The TV in the background used to be a must, but now I can fall asleep either way. My boyfriend has got me hooked on postrock music-- that stuff is awesome to fall asleep to! As long as it's not hot as balls, I'll find a way to fall asleep.

(Like a rabbit) : 2 : 0 Well, somebody tried to get me to owe beer when I said "Oh my God, that was the first time I was right next to the lead tracker the whole jump," after the sunset track yesterday. I hate it when I drop the F-bomb, but it defintely didn't count for beer (IMO) with this one. I never reply to the weekend number thread, so does this post count for beer?? hahaha. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Condolences - Paul Joseph - AKA darnknit and crwpj
LyraM45 replied to Tonto's topic in Blue Skies - In Memory Of
I ment to post this before... and it's not really a condolence, but it's meaningful. I was reading my email right before I heard about PJ, and this was the ONLY email in my box that I just happened to get right before. Take a look..... Subject: FW: If Tomorrow Starts Without Me A few weeks ago a woman was killed in an auto accident. She was very well liked, so the office shut down for her funeral and it was on the news and so on. On the day the workers came back to work, they found this poem in their e-mail that the deceased woman had sent on Friday before she left for home. "If tomorrow starts without me, And I'm not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too; But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, that an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand, And said my place was ready, In heaven far above, And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk away, A tear fell from my eye, For all my life, I'd always thought, I didn't want to die. I had so much to live for, So much left yet to do, it seemed almost impossible, that I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays, The good ones and the bad, I thought of all that we shared, And all the fun we had. If I could relive yesterday, Just even for a while, I'd say good-bye and kiss you and maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories, would take the place of me. And when I thought of worldly things, I might miss some tomorrow, I thought of you, and when I did, My heart was filled with sorrow. But when I walked through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home. When God looked down and smiled at me, From His great golden throne, He said, "This is eternity, And all I've promised you." Today your life on earth is past, but here life starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last, and since each day is the same way, There's no longing for the past. So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart, For every time you think of me, I'm right here, in your heart " I'm not religious or anything, but it's a very nice poem that I just happen to read two mins before I heard about PJ; it was too coincidental and felt the need to post. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :) -

PJ was as smart as they come, but in a smart ass way. He would insult somebody evey chance he got, but deep down underneath all of his quips was a real big teddy bear. When I started out at xkeys five years ago, I was an 18 year old know it all, and an obvious favorite to pick on-- especially with packing: "You're gonna actually put THAT in the bag?? Where the hell did you learn to pack? I can't believe your going to go skydive with that shit." And he would make sure to say it loud enough so everybody would hear it and stare at you packing a ball of shit up into the bag. I wanted to just slug him so many times; but hey-- that was PJ. I was talking with somebody yesterday about that coat he would wear. I would see him walking to the Alpine in that friggen orange jacket and I would give him a ride if he had shoes on-- those feet weren't going anywhere near my nice clean interior!! Then there were the nights we chatted after I got off work delivering pizza. I would bring him a pie and some chicken kickers and he would give me beer and marlboro reds-- what a good trade! Even though PJ was a sarcastic smart ass, he always hammered home safety in a serious way. I'm really sad about this, but he really loved doing this and he died doing what he loved. I just keep thinking-- man, I hope that there isn't a "shoes required for entry" sign at the pearly gates..... I'm in FL for most of the year while I go to school, but Xkeys is my home DZ and my heart goes out to his family and everybody back at home. BSBD, PJ.... you will be missed. I go to school about 30 miles south of KSC and never get a chance to make the trip a little north to get closer for the launch. I got a spot early on cocoa beach today and took a few shots-- it was a perfect day and the launch was incredible!! Any other FL people get a chance to see it? Does anybody know if Deland or Sebastian did hop n' pops again? Here are a few shots....pretty crappy with my point and shoot digital. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... Slacklining - another fun way to hurt yourself on the dz
LyraM45 replied to skybytch's topic in The Bonfire
hahaha....here's some good ones. My boyfriend got me hooked on this. Now I have some way to occupy myself between loads or on windy days. ....oh, and it is a good way to get hurt-- I don't have nuts, but I've been slapped between the legs so hard that I was bruised. You get beat up learning, but once you get a stand up start going you're all good. -
Should D license requirements be changed?
LyraM45 replied to Croc's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is what I don't understand either! I have horrible night vision, and have even been denied for a FAA first class medical because I have the crappiest vision in the dark; no depth preception what so ever too! So, even if I can execute all of the other requirements for a D-license and could even be the best skydiver in the universe or something, the USPA won't reward me a D-license because I can't see at night??? That sucks! This is a mute point for me right now since I'm so far from a D, but it's the principle of the thing that pisses me off.... grrr. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :) -
I was in the flight program here until aviation fuel costs went sky high and now I can't afford it. My official major is still "Aviation Meteorology," but I'm not on the flight line anymore. As for a storm chaser?? I dunno about that one! This also used and kinda still is my theory. I just got done a three month internship with the NOAA National Weather Service for the Philadelphia area. I gained so much respect for these guys because they are really down in the trenches doing the actual science. NWS is responsible for all of your warnings and say-so's. All of the local news meteorologists were calling our office to see what our take was on things so they could base their TV forecasts on it. So I guess it's true that more commercialized and private sector meteorologists do look to the NWS for their two cents. BUT, I've also been on the flip side and, through a program at my school, are familiar with work over at ABC in orlando. Their head meteorologist, Tom Terry, is a great guy who actually graduated with a meteorology degree from University of OK, along with two of my own professors. He really does do all his own forecasting and their team of Meteorologists are actually degree accredited meteorologists who know what they are doing. Whenever you see a station advertising that their meteorologists are "AMS certified," it basically means it's some bimbo with a broadcasting degree that took a quick few hour long course on weather basics. Since I'm working my butt off through this Meteorology degree and these people haven't but they get hired for this job because they are "pretty,".... I guess I'm a little biased and I should shut up before I get myself into throuble. The forecasts weigh greatly on the models. These models compute everything that we could do out by hand (which would take us hours and hours) in seconds. Not only do we have numerous raw data from models that we can look at to help our forecast, but there is also a collective group of forecasters at the National Center for Enviromental Prediction who put out a forecast to take a look at along with all the models you can look at on your own. For the most part, if you look at a few major ones like an ETA MOS, GFS, NAM, they are all pretty spot on. Say if precipitation is moving in, they all might have it coming in at the same time, but might be off on the precip totals by a few tenths of an inch each, and thats where the individual forecasters decision comes in to play with a "well, how much should I forecast for precip??" ....and then you have to throw in your own two cents. You get to know which model handle which weather situation better and you know which one to trust for your forecast area. As for Ernesto, it looks like all the models dropped the bomb on this one and all the Meteorologists are dumbfounded by it. Sure, if the individual Meteorologists instinct and all he knew was telling him different from the models, he could have put it out, but why risk it when the models are pretty close most of the time? They were just doing what has worked for them (and all Meteorologists, not just at the NHC) in the past and unfortunately, got burned this time. Either way, I don't think the guys at the NHC would loose their job, but I have heard stories of a few TV meteorologists who predicted a HUGE snow event, never got a flurry out of it, and then up and left the show for "personal reasons" or some other crap; so, I guess in a way it can happen. I'm sorry for this being long and winded, but I figured I would answer some questions and rant a little bit. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Hahaha.... actually, I'm a Meteorology student at Florida Institute of Technology, and this stuff isn't as easy as it looks. In all honesty, they are dumbfounded as to why this thing didn't strengthen in the straits. The only thing that I can see effecting it enough is the small upper level low ahead of it, but all the models forecasted that to lift out earlier today and not be a factor, but I guess they were wrong..... The sea surface temps are a few degrees cooler than in the year or two previous, which makes a big difference and any meteorologist can look and see that. But when all the models say one thing and you think another, you kinda just go on the model unfortunately and in some cases, like this one, you can get burned. It's why they call us "professional liars." Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

depends on what you do and where you go. I go to FL Tech, which is an aviation school and it's like 9 grand just for your friggen private. But, if you go to some place that offers lessons over the counter part 61, you can do it for 4/5 grand now adays I think.... I dunno, aviation fuel is just so damn high right now, so I don't fly anymore; can't afford it. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

I'm sending an email to them (the lawyers) as we speak. I'm so boiling pissed at this right now; I could just scream at the top of my lungs. I'm all for giving these lawyers a swift kick to the nuts..... insensitive pricks. They just don't get it..... My heart really goes out to this girl's family and all involved, but this is just rediculous. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Things not to say on an commercial jet after leaving the WFFC 2006
LyraM45 replied to WFFC's topic in The Bonfire
yea....I've done that one before. the thing that kills me every single time I fly: I check my wrist as if I were looking at my alti. Not only do I do it once when we take off,but I do it again a few seconds later to see if we're at 1000 feet yet to take off the belts. hahahaha....I never learn. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :) -
i'm a florida girl now too, and don't get me wrong, I do love sebastian. But, I do miss my home DZ, crosskeys. That place F'n rocks!

if you go onto the apple website, I think they have directions on there about clearing the memory and reseting the IPOD. I too got a refurbished IPOD on ebay and had to go through the hooplah. Just get what you need off of their site (downloads, FAQ, etc)-- thats what I did and mine works great.

Recently, since I'm 1000 miles from him.... I'm always thinking of him, even right before bed since I usually just get off the phone with him. congrats on the 22 years! Here's something that'll make you feel old: you were married the year I was born! I'm so a day late and a dollar short on this thread, but I'll brag a little bit:::: Basically, Matt is my world and I've never been more in love and comfortable with somebody in my life. He's such a goofball-- I love em'! I could go on, but I would need a lot more space to tell ya how I really feel! see pics :) Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)
