Aerodynamically, on a flat surface, with no acceleration, in many cases, yes. All cars are designed different - a pickup may get better efficiency at lower speed than a coupe. But real driving conditions will supercede this rule (unless you are on a long trip in Kansas with no traffic). Adding up how fast you accelerate and brake, how you approach hills with momentum, and how you account for other traffic will out-pace the 55 rule in typical traffic. Research hypermiling for some things you can try. Or, just get a job where you can work from home (I've worked from home for about 10 years now). Living in the city means I can walk to a lot of stores. I don't put many miles on my car at all. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

C'mon! Let us have some fun with stereotypes. You all can pretend we all ride horses and shoot Native Americans. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Well, I was thinking "sex", but apparently, you are thinking "rough sex". Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Every time I climbed a 14er, I saw people running at the top of the ridges. I can barely breathe up there. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

You don't already? Man, I go out of my way to not tell people that I jump. People just don't get it. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

It's not a hard call at all. It's wrong, and if it's implemented, people will lose faith in the 'net, and find something else to use. Fortunately, it won't happen (at least not with public knowledge). These congressional proposals are like frivolous lawsuits - they mean nothing except a waste of taxpayer dollars. Anyone in congress can propose anything, no matter how stupid, and most of the time, they don't see any daylight except in a sensational media headline. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

It'll be even more interesting to see his re-election campaign: "... and I assure all you voters out there, that as soon as you vote me into office, I will fart in your general direction and do whatever the foreign oil companies tell me to do!" (followed by rousing tea-party applause) Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100617/ap_on_re_as/teen_sailor An article detailing the cost of her rescue. She was on the border of French and Australian waters, so both countries had to contribute to the rescue. It was likely a few million dollars. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

FedEx? Seriously - that's gotta be the stupidest thing I've heard in the last 20 seconds. The last stupid thing was the original post. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

You just described many CEOs and other executives that I personally know. In fact, I think you just described "ego" in general. As far as dorkzone - I posted a question about a toothbrush, and got one statement about someone's false teeth, followed by two innuendos about oral sex. That's all the proof I need. With a lot of practice, your eustachian tubes get used to pressurizing without assistance. Most freedivers have eustachian tubes you can drive a truck through, so they don't need to perform the "valsalva maneuver" (pinching your nose and blowing) - their ears adjust to the pressure changes without much work. They may be more susceptible to "reverse block", which can happen on the ascent. That's a real bitch, because it's much harder to correct without going back down to depth. Sometimes it happens to scuba instructors that go up and down a lot chasing students. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I've been over the Cayman Trench - I jokingly threatened to drop my girlfriend's compass down there. It would go a long, long way before it touched anything. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I understand they were used as trainers in WW2, and they expected students to flip them on landing. So rather than being a total anomaly, it's just a rookie mistake, I suppose. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Does anyone own one? Supposedly, they are just as good as other high-end electric toothbrushes. National Institute of Health did a comparison to the Oral-B and Sonicare, and found that they are all pretty good. I'm interested in the fact that you can brush your teeth in 40 seconds with this. I have to admit, I don't know much about toothbrushes. I'm one of those lucky people that's never had a cavity - I go to the dentist like once every 15 years, just for a cleaning, and they always tell me how great my teeth are. I brush two or three times a week Never floss. Don't use any mouthwashes, etc. I've had a Sonicare (original version) for about 15 years, and it seems OK. It's lasted a long time, considering it's a NiMH battery, although I don't use it as much as I should. I replace the heads once a year or so. Just looking for a change, I guess, and wondering if anyone who owns a hydrabrush has a recommendation (or not). Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I never joined a Frat, but years later, I worked for a company and the CTO was someone I respected. He told me he was in a Frat in college. Then he told me that he once took an entire semester off of school, and his only plan was to sit in the basement of the Frat, and smoke pot all day. So that's what he did for an entire semester, nothing else. Next semester, he resumed his studies and later graduated. I don't know if that has anything to do with Fraternities in general, but I think the story is funny. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Guy or girl? A LOT of people have HSV-1, the oral form of herpes. By the time adults are 50 years old, about 60% of them have it. Cold sores on your mouth - a bit painful, but do not reduce one's lifespan. Most people don't care - do you rat on your friends if they have cold sores? HSV-2. For a guy, it sucks, but it's not going to reduce your lifespan. You'll have to wear protection for the rest of your life, unless you can find a partner with the same condition, but you should have been doing that anyway. For a girl, it's different. If she has a baby, she is going to be required to have a cesarean section by the delivering doctor, regardless of how often she is outbreaking. That's a significant health risk, increasing the chances of death by four times, and it removes any possibility of choice for a woman's delivery. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Did Bush Jr just admit to committing war crimes?
riddler replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
You have evidence of what the CIA has been doing during the cold-war years? Or is that just speculation? OTOH, Bush freely admitted what was done under his administration. And it is definitely against international convention. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD -

Obama could make up for it by condemning Israel for their "atrocities" on the Gaza flotilla. Wouldn't that be the mother of all hypocrisy? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD -
Can a wind powered vehicle travel down wind, faster than the wind?
riddler replied to shropshire's topic in The Bonfire
That's probably part of the problem - the topic should be called "Cross-Wind faster than Down-Wind". Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
