  1. How so?. People dive off bridges, cliffs and high boards every day. Apart from having the bungy attached to her ankles which ultimately didn't affect her too much, what was the problem. The crocs were not a factor, with an infestation ratio of zero. She got a few bruises and got wet. Big deal!!. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  2. I know a few people who have names people always laugh at...Wayne King, Robert Sole, and Jenna Taylor spring to mind.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  4. OK, I never knew that. However, wouldn't it be likely the max temperature would be more often at the top of an ascent, rather than after he had descended and perhaps not been on his burner so much?. Agree it might be sluggish and unweildy to manoevre a big heavy balloon.. Wind conditions were apparently very low, but I've done quite a bit of jumping in that area, and you can get some squirrely conditions even on apparently still days, especially if there is a westerly blowing over the top of the Ruahine ranges, just to the west of that region. I agree, like most aviation emergencies, the safest place to be is back on the ground, as quickly as possible. From powerline height some of them might have had a chance of getting out alive, if he'd just dumped it onto the deck....The two who bailed out might have negated any efforts he was making to do that however. He would have had his hands full, for sure....I 3expect he would have had a fire extinguisher aboard, but with 10 other people in a panic he could well have been overloaded with his tasks at that point.... 5. Why fix them if they ain't broken?. And why go to the money tree just because everyone else has. Save your bucks for something really special... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  6. Glad that the more than 10,000 first jumpers I've safely trained and jumped over my career have a different opinion. You need to calm down, it was an incident, but the fact she survived, despite all the difficulties, shows that the situation wasn't that life threatening. Over reacting like the tabloid newspapers do to a situation, doesn't make it a worse situation than it was in reality. Saying that, she still could have died. All of which proves the point that it wasn't the big deal the news media tried to make it out to be. The waters weren't quite as crocodile infested as the headline made out. Of course they want a dramatic headline. Seems like you swallowed their line. Many many people die in hospitals. I suppose you consider them safe places.... 7. Red Bull tastes like crap. It beats m how easily people are sucked in by a bit of flash marketing. But hey, good luck to them... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  8. Yes. Most bungy jumps over water result in the bungy being at full stretch just above the water, resulting in the jumper effectively stopping completely for a nanosecond before they rebound. Bungies are calibrated and the operators can easily allow you to touch with your fingertips or more. (Often they'll ask the question: Elbows?, Waist?, Ankles?) They can dip you in precisely.... A few bruises from the water slap....She was able to smile about it afterwards, indicating she was not badly hurt. Someone at the bungy site needs a kick in the arse though, poor maintenance. Most bungy cords are retired from service way before they need to be as a matter of policy. Never seen one snap like that. Not a good idea to bungy in a 3rd world country though. I saw one operation in Indonesia, with the crew made up entirely of kids about 13 years old, in fact I saw no adults on the site at all. The gear looked pretty shabby to me... Go somewhere where you know the place will be regulated to high safety standards. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  9. Interestingly, parachutes were available in WW1. The Germans used them for their balloon observers to use, and also their pilots, which meant many lived to fight another day. The British however did not. Some Colonel Blimp decided in his wisdom, that parachutes would provide the pilots with an excuse to bail out and avoid combat with the enemy (cowardice in the face of the enemy), and they decided as a matter of policy not to equip their pilots with them. A lot of British pilots went down in flames as a result. Not surprised really, just another example of the bungling idiots who conducted the battles..... Parachutes may not have been much of an option in this case...only 500feet of altitude, untrained pasengers, burning nylon raining down from the balloon itself. The accident happened at the end of a 45 minute flight, as the pilot was trying to land. Fairly still wind conditions at 7.30 in the morning. Like skydivers, I would think balloonists would be even more acutely aware of the dangers of power lines, even if he was trying to land close to a road to make his recovery crews job easier.... Fire and nylon, not a good combination.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  10. Two of then did jump, to escape the fire. Prolly made things worse because the loss of weight would make the balloon rise higher, combined with the extra heat generated by the fire itself. Any that survived the impact would have been covered in molten nylon from the balloon itself. Nasty way to go. Can't imagine how the pilot got himself into the situation in the first place, unless he ran out of gas or suffered a problem with his burner, surely he would have simply burnt a bit of gas to rise over the lines if he was getting close. 11. Spoken like a true whuffo.... Although when the bungee breaks at full stretch like that, the jumper is going quite slowly, so effectively hits the water at the same speed a high diver would. Not that life threatening, but swimming with metres of bungy cord attached, and fighting off the crocs at the same time would make it a tad difficult.... Bungy jumping is pretty boring after skydiving though, its over too quickly. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  13. First cutaway jump # 6. first freefall, horseshoe mal, reserve open about 500 feet (estimated from the ground, no altimeters in those days). Round 24ft reserve inverted completely, landed in telephone lines, lost all the ripcords. Cost me 6 dozen beer for all the firsts....... Survived prolly because the JM put me out at 3500 by mistake, instead of the usual 3000 feet. Was lucky the sentinal 2000 AAD didn't fire, my reserve would have gone right into all the crap I was towing. But after surviving that, I never thought I was gonna die skydiving, nor did I ever worry about my EP's. Felt pretty bulletproof because I was aware all the way through. 16. I can accept the inherent risk we take flinging ourselves out of an aeroplane, and then opening a main parachute or reserve (if necessary) to cheat the reaper. I find it a bit more difficult to accept someone saving their life by opening a parachute correctly, only to die under that good canopy on touchdown. Its not really necessary, is it.?Quote My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  19. 350 people died since 1998 in the US alone. I'm shaking my head at the simple waste of life, and then someone comes along, and says we had a really safe year..... Yeah......right....... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  20. True in that membership is not growing, false on shooting down his statement about number of jumps. The average jumper today makes far more skydives than they did 20 years ago. Year Skydiving Fatalities in U.S. Estimated Annual Jumps Fatalities Per 1000 Jumps 2010 21 3.0 million 0.007 2009 16 3.0 million 0.005 2008 30 2.6 million 0.012 2007 18 2.5 million 0.007 2006 21 2.5 million 0.008 2005 27 2.6 million 0.010 2004 21 2.6 million 0.008 2003 25 2.6 million 0.010 2002 33 2.6 million 0.013 2001 35 2.6 million 0.013 2000 32 2.7 million 0.012 So, as usual, in your rush to disparage another poster, you're wrong. I might suggest that you take a look at the way you "talk" to posters on this website. You could do with a little less condescension, and a little more information. Ian ps: For this actually interested, here are the USPA statistics http://www.uspa.org/AboutSkydiving/SkydivingSafety/tabid/526/Default.aspx I'm shaking my head here. What sprang to mind as I read this post was a quote I read somewhere, I think attributed to Unca Joe Stalin.... " One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is just a statistic". Please advise the family and friends of all the dead people that 2011 was a good year....... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  25. You can easily be in a winning team in scrambles....the fun aspect is great, but the competitive aspect generally goes right through the team. The team leaders will be keen to win and show up their contemporaries as to who is the best at coaching their less experienced team mates the best. You will pick up lots of good stuff on a scrambles team, and its fun and a lot less stressful than normal competition can be. And its great boost for the newbie to be in the winning team.
