Which part are you asking me "why" about?
-
I think that the problem is that the "situation" we're discussing is rather vague. Some of us are assuming that it's two responsible adults we're talking about, and others are assuming that the person with herpes is some total asshole who is going around infecting people without warning. But I don't think the actual situation has been established. And I think that what I would do would depend a lot on the actual situation and people involved.
-
I don't think there's anything wrong with telling if it's "some shitbag guy" who wouldn't have volunteered the information to her.
-
I have several friends who have herpes (that I am aware of), and I don't make it my business to go around informing everyone else about it. But I'm pretty sure they are the type of people who would be honest about it before having sex with someone. And that information wasn't given in the OP - whether the person tends to be honest or not. Also, I seem to recall reading that something like one in four people has herpes. So it's probably a good idea to be protecting oneself until certain that a sex partner does not have STDs. (But I definitely wouldn't want to have a relationship with anyone who was not upfront about such things.)
-
I had to look it up. But knowing about it didn't make it any funnier. I found it to be neither funny nor disturbing.

Observing what works for other people and putting it to use yourself. That's science right there. (Though I think that belief in a god only works if one actually believes, so in this case, what works for some people will not work for others.)

Oh, I have lots of scary thoughts. You should hang out with me sometime, and I'll fill you in on them. (You'd probably like most of them though. ) I may be out at Chicks Rock this year, we could compare and contrast.

If a 35 year old male is banging a 20 year old female...
Shotgun replied to iluvtofly's topic in The Bonfire
Well, maybe not the dogs. Sorry, it's a package deal. Dogs? Really? That's what you think of me.... Yeah, I was trying to figure out if he was talking about actual dogs or you. I'm sure you at least have a costume. -
Well, I think that "science" can induce a belief in a higher power (through the use of drugs or other methods that may one day be developed much further). But yeah, that doesn't fill one's need for "religion," which might involve certain rituals and a sense of community (and which there is also likely a scientific explanation for, and therefore likely a scientific substitution - I guess I don't really see anything as being outside the realm of science, but then it's a fairly broad term).
-
I'll agree that religion will never meet the needs of science, but I can't agree that science will never meet the needs of the spirit. I think there is a scientific explanation for why certain things (belief in a god, belief in chakras, whatever...) help to heal a person emotionally or "spiritually". So I think that the more we learn about this type of biological function, the more that science will "meet the needs of the spirit." And even the use of psychotropic drugs to induce a spiritual experience - I'd call that using science to meet the needs of the spirit.

Reading the full speech, I didn't take it as warning away from economic ambition. I took it as warning about making economic ambition one's _top_ priority and value. And I agree with him.

Calif Assembly Votes to Ban Plastic Grocery Bags
Shotgun replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
Most of the stores that I go to give a discount for each reusable bag that I use, so I guess they are already effectively "charging" people for not bringing their own bags. One of the problems I see with actually charging for bags is that people might start getting pissed off with baggers who don't know how to fill the bags efficiently. But maybe it would get a lot more people to start using the reusable bags. It took us a while to remember to take the bags with us, but now it's just a habit. And each bag holds so much more than the plastic bags do, that it makes it much easier to carry the groceries in. As for which is worse - paper or plastic - I have no idea. I still get enough of the plastic bags that I can use them for cleaning the cats' litter boxes, but I guess paper would work for that too, and paper would probably be better as far as breaking down. (And I guess I'd have to figure out if five cents a bag is reasonable, or if there is a better alternative.) -

Priest bashes Barak for supporting perversion "Eating Da Poo Poo"
Shotgun replied to DJL's topic in Speakers Corner
That video would be funny if it wasn't so freakin' sad. Hopefully most of those people can think for themselves rather than just buying all the poo poo that the speaker is giving them. -
Well, I think I can agree with that.

I am about to start reading the book my mom just sent me: The Class of '42: Marines in WW II It is written by a man who was in the same company as my grandfather, so his experience in the war may have been similar. She even sent me a detailed timeline from his service record, along with a chapter by chapter description of what my grandfather would have been doing at that time. Pretty cool.

Family asked to pay for car damage after dog run over
Shotgun replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
This part I'll agree with. If the driver had been driving recklessly, then the driver should share the responsibility. But I assumed from the story, that that wasn't the case. (Not sure though.) Well, I don't think you should be held responsible for accidentally hitting a jaywalker, assuming you were doing nothing wrong. That is quite a bit different from hitting a pedestrian who is crossing the street legally. -
Just curious... Do you think that most Christians and/or conservatives would like to see the sodomy laws reinstated? And would you like to see them reinstated? Personally, I don't want to restrict you from living your life the way you want to, as long as you are not harming someone else. But if your ideology seeks to keep me (or anyone else) from having that same freedom, then yes, I would want to restrict it.

OK, so we make good care available to them, and then what? If they couldn't afford decent maternal care, then they probably can't afford to raise a child.

Family asked to pay for car damage after dog run over
Shotgun replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
From personal experience, the driver is held resposible when hitting a minor, at least financially. Even if it was completely unavoidable? (the minor and/or the parents' fault) I came very close to hitting a teenage girl the other day. I was approaching an intersection with a green light, and suddenly she ran across the crosswalk without even looking at me (or the "don't walk" light she had, apparently). I had to hit the brakes to avoid hitting her, and she still didn't look at me. (Looked like she had earphones on, so she probably didn't hear me.) If I had actually hit her, I would not have felt responsible (though I would probably have felt traumatized if she was injured). And I would hope that the law would not find me responsible in that situation either, because that would be just plain wrong. And as for the dog, yes, the owner should pay for the vehicle damage. -
Freedom OF religion means freedom FROM religion
Shotgun replied to funjumper101's topic in Speakers Corner
It would seem that some other natural rights would be the freedom to use drugs, the freedom to be nude, freedom to commit suicide, basically freedom to do anything to your own body? Also, when you say that you have the right to be left alone from bad people, whose responsibility is it to protect you from the bad people? And who decides what "bad" means? -
Apparently they are getting frogs. Lots of frogs. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100526/ap_on_fe_st/eu_odd_greece_frog_closure

Not at all - go for it! OK, well now that I have your permission . . .
